Is this thermostatic (limits temperature) or an always-on heater?

MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the unit if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as they do with any electrical appliance. Otherwise, it is designed for 24/7 operation and you can leave it plugged in all day. This item has been certified by MET labs to adhere to strict electrical safety standards.
Would this work to keep our 50 gal frog "pond" from completely freezing?

This submersible birdbath de-icer is thermostatically controlled to automatically keep water from freezing. The 50 watt model is appropriate for bird baths with 10 gallons of water or less.
Can this deicer be used in a concrete birdbath?

If left plugged in should it keep water from freezing down to 10 degrees farenheit and does it suffer damage if the temperature drops below that?

So far it works but...

I got this right before the frigid cold snap hit in Colorado. Our weather got down -12 at night and the water did not freeze. My only complaint is that the shape of this de-icer does not sit in my birdbath very well. Because of its odd shape and too light-weight, I have to keep a rock on it to keep it on the bottom of the bath. If the birdbath was rectangle it might sit better. I had another de-icer before that was round and pretty pricey, but I forgot to fill the birdbath for a couple of days and it burned out. Always make sure its always covered by water or it will burn out. I saved money buying this one, but I would not buy this model again.

Warming Waters

This is my second deicer. The first I've had for 5 or 6 years and it's going strong. I use it in my chicken coop so the girls have water at all times. I got this second one for the bird bath which has a curved bottom (and the deicer works sits better on flat bottomed baths) so I just put a rock on it and that keeps it in place. I'm very please with it.

Works well, strange shape

We ordered two of these for our midwest winters. They prevented total freezing, but were difficult to keep submerged so they did work properly. Maybe an oval shape might work better, but they did get us through below zero temperatures.

doesn’t work

This product works poorly. It worked for one day and then stopped. Will be requesting a refund. Very disappointed as these de icers are extremely hard to find.

I recommend it

My first winter with this product and it held up well except for some peeling on edges already. I have a shallow 18" birdbath so the watt was just right. There were some low freezing temps in teens where half of the birdbath water was frozen but birds still had access to fresh water even at low temps. Disappointed that the outer plastic layer is peeling on the edges a bit but overall, birds & other wildlife loved it. I enjoyed providing them fresh water when they needed it. Felt safe knowing the watt wasn't so high, just enough to get thru the winter days. I have a pet tortoise so I always recommend K&H Pet products. They are a life saver!

Works as promised

Had to wait through most of the cold weather as this item was “temporarily out of stock”. I pounced on ordering when the notification arrived that it was back in stock. It works exactly as promised to keep the birdbath defrosted so the birds can hydrate. This item was priced more economically with Chewy than where we shopped elsewhere. Very happy to finally have it in use and more importantly, so are the birds!

Works as Advertised

I was concerned about this product reading some of the reviews. I am happy to say even after a couple winters in Michigan this product is working just fine - birds, deer, squirrels, neighbor’s cat, occasional hawk and even the wild turkeys are very happy with this purchase.

works well

I’m pleased with my purchase and so are the birds! North Texas experienced a hard freeze with sleet and snow and temperatures in the teens. The heater kept water from freezing.

Save your money

I purchased this and was excited to receive it as I have several new rescued birds. I plugged it in and it did not heat up. Worthless.
