I'm nervous about leaving a cat house plugged up. Is it possible for it to heat while plugged in and then be able to be unplugged at night when the family is asleep?

This House may be plugged in as needed. MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the bed if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as they do with any electrical appliance. Otherwise, it is designed for 24/7 operation and you can leave it plugged in all day or night. We also carry the K&H Pet Products Outdoor Unheated Kitty House if you prefer a shelter that is unheated and does not need a power source.
So does just plug straight into the wall or is there a on and off switch?

This plugs straiight into an outlet for operation. Allow 1 - 2 hours for the heated mat to warm. The unit will feel slightly warm to the touch. When an animal lies on the pad, it will reach a maximum temperature of approximately 102° F. The built-in thermostat will automatically regulate the temperature.
I live in Illinois, which means cold winters. I would place this shelter on my deck with a roof over it, keeping snow & rain off of it. Will the heating element be strong enough for my friendly neighborhood ferale cat to survive my harsh winter?

Once the heated bed is plugged in allow 15 to 30 minutes for the heated bed to begin to warm and fully expand. The unit will feel slightly warm to the touch. The built in thermostat will automatically regulate the temperature. After initial warm-up, your heated bed will feel cooler to the touch. This is the intention for energy efficiency. When the pet lies upon the bed, it will warm to a cozy, pet pleasing temperature even in the coldest of weather.
I plan on putting food in there to lure my Ferrell cat inside. My question is will the bed be heated for her to realize it is a warm place to hang out. Or does the cat need to sit inside to activate the heater ?

K&H beds and pads will emit heat anytime they are plugged in so your pet can sense that heat and be drawn to the bed or pad for warmth and comfort. When your pet is not on the pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.
