FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a human heating pad and a Pet Bed Warmer?

The Pet Bed Warmer provides a subtle heat and reaches a maximum temperature of 102°F, which is the natural body temperature of dogs and cats. A regular human heating pad will be much too warm and could damage a pet's skin and cause him/her to be afraid of the heat source.

Does the Pet Bed Warmer need to be placed inside a pet bed?

Yes, the Pet Bed Warmer should always be placed inside a pet bed. It should never be used by itself.

How much bedding should be between the Pet Bed Warmer and a pet's body?

There should be at least 1/2 inch of padding between the warmer and a pet's body.

What temperature will a bed reach with the Pet Bed Warmer inside?

The surface of the bed that contains the Pet Bed Warmer will be about 15°F above ambient air temperature until the pet lies on the bed. Then it will warm to about 102°F. The surface temperature depends on how much padding is on the pet bed. If there is a lot of padding, it will be cooler. If the padding is thinner, the surface will be warmer.

Could I use the Pet Bed Warmer outdoors if it's covered and out of the snow?

While our Pet Bed Warmer is an excellent product, it is not designed to output enough heat for the cold outdoor temperatures of winter. Rather, it is designed to elevate the temperature of a pet’s bed that is already around room temperature.

Does it matter which side of the Pet Bed Warmer faces up?

For this particular product, it does not matter which side faces up.

Are the bed warmers waterproof?

The Pet Bed Warmer is water-resistant. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

How long is the cord?

The cord is 5.5 feet long.

Is this warmer pressure sensitive?

The warmer is not pressure sensitive. All K&H heated beds and pads feature dual thermostats and are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature when he/she lies on the pad. This is a function of the insulation provided by a pet’s body, not the weight of the pet.K&H beds and pads will emit heat anytime they are plugged in so your pet can sense that heat and be drawn to the bed or pad for warmth and comfort. When your pet is not on the pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.

Can I use an extension cord with this product?

MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. This is because they cannot test every extension cord on the market in conjunction with our products for safety. Also, MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product.

How long can a warmer be plugged in?

MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the warmer if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as they do with any electrical appliance. Otherwise, it is designed for 24/7 operation and you can leave it plugged in all day. This item has been certified by MET labs to adhere to strict electrical safety standards.

Is there an off/on switch?

There is not an off/on switch. The warmer is always on when plugged in.

We got this warming pad for my older summer-weather-loving cat so we could keep our thermostat down in winter (like really down, like coats and hats indoors low) but keep him comfortable, and he basically now just alternates between it and a warm lap and nowhere else. He LOVES that thing, he's sooo much warmer, and we can keep our heating bills low. We put one under his blanket by the window and he's there every hour of the day that he's not on my lap. He used to sleep ON me (log roll me when I turn or sleep between my legs) until we got this and now he doesn't even come in our bedroom at night. Because they're so cheap on Chewey (not to mention FAST shipping!), I ended up buying 5 more for friends We got this warming pad for my older summer-weather-loving cat so we could keep our thermostat down in winter (like really down, like coats and hats indoors low) but keep him comfortable, and he basically now just alternates between it and a warm lap and nowhere else. • Great warmer!

    By on

Our elderly lab/boxer mix (55 pds) has arthritis and is restless at night, trying to find a comfortable position to lie in and stay warm. This low watt bed warmer has been great for her. We placed it under a comforter which is on top of her orthopedic bed and she loves it. She stays put through the night and stays warm but not too warm. Note: The first time you plug this warmer in, it doesn't feel like much if any heat is coming from it but don't be fooled, its working. Follow the directions on the package and give it a chance. Our dog loves it!

  • Kitties LOVE these HEAT pads!!!

    By on

These really keep kitties warm. We don't have the type of kitty beds to insert them "inside" the kitty bed, so I improvised by making a thick flannel cover with a Velcro closing so it doesn't slip out. OR... Be sure to wrap well a soft flannel blanket material like is recommended (1/2 inch thick) on both sides of heat pad so kitties don't get too hot. Then I set it INSIDE (ON TOP) of their kitty beds. They love it and really keeps them warm.

  • CAT ON THE DOG BED

    By on

I adopted a feral kitten several years back and she thinks my Border Collie is her mother. Tig is a calico who has to sleep touching my Collie who does not really like any one touching her as she sleeps. I got my Collie a medium Bed Warmer but Tig hogged the large bed. So I got a K and H large Bed Warmer and now Tig is giving the Collie a little room now. And Chewy had the perfect price to ease the the turmoil in the house.

  • OK product. Does what it is suppose to do

    By on

I bought this product for a cat that has an overactive thyroid. She is now on a trans-dermal cream that is administered through the soft skin on the inside of the ear (2x daily). Her thyroid condition is now under control but she is cold all the time (like a regular cat is). Their always cold and looking for warmth. She doesn't care for it at all and won't use it. Oh well, we tried. She prefers someone's lap for warmth.

  • Works as expected

    By on

Works just as expected. I’d advice getting a little smaller than you think you need. I assumed I should purchase a bed warmer that was as long and wide as “Tucker’s” bed, which fits his entire night time crate. What we didn’t think of was that if he got too warm there was no area he could lay without heat. For Tucker it was okay because he is always cold and we keep our bedroom, where he sleeps, cold in the winter months.

  • Best Price Bed Warmers

    By on

Bought these as Christmas gifts to my kitties, but they turned out to be gifts to myself. Now, instead of using me as a bed warmer all night, they are sleeping in their beds! Well, most of the night anyway. I’m grateful to still get some snuggles! This price beat all the others hands down. Once again, Chewy comes out on top with quality product, excellent service, and affordable prices. I love these folks!

  • Doesn't heat much

    By on

I've never used this type of heater before. Wanted something to warm up puppy's bed area. The instructions state to put it in the lining of the bed. Pup's bed doesn't have a lining, so I folded it in a towel and put that under her blanket. Never could feel any warmth though, even after several days on. Too expensive for what it does, too. Gave it 3 stars instead of 2 in case I'm doing something incorrectly.

  • great investment

    By on

this is the second such "heating pad" we've purchase for our dog, and older chow mix who stays outdoors, and he loves it. No on or off switch -- it kicks off automatically -- so there are no worries about it overheating or him accidentally turning it on/off. And there's just enough warmth to sooth him when he's cold or aching. I don't remember how long the first pad lasted, but I'm thinking it was a couple of years, so it's definitely a great investment for dog owners. approved by Señor Blackie and his humans!

  • Excellant for indoor use!

    By on

This is excellent for indoor use. It gets plenty warm and the animals love it. There should always be a blanket or towel over the warmer though or it will dry out the animals skin and actually be too hot with direct contact and they will get bald spots. A blanket over will still get plenty warm and it will distribute the heat a little better as well. People complain it doesn't get hot and they hardly feel anything. Keep in mind that the human hand is used to hot water in our showers, hot water for our dishes, etc and our definition of "hot" is a lot different. We want something instantly hot like our water, however this bed is not designed to be instantly hot or it will burn your animal. It warms This is excellent for indoor use. We want something instantly hot like our water, however this bed is not designed to be instantly hot or it will burn your animal. It warms slowly and the heat really comes from the insulation of your pets fur and the heater. If you just place your hand on it then it might not seem real warm, but when you pet lays on it and traps the heat with their fur and bodies it is plenty warm. I have 3 of them and the cats love them in the winter, however I do unplug them when I leave for work in the morning. I am one of those people that don't want to take a chance of something accidently shorting out and starting a fire when I'm not here. The small pad fits fine in a normal to small pet bed. As a safety note- NEVER use a human heating pad for a pet. Again, our definition of hot is a different and a human heating pad even on low could be too hot for an animal and cause dry itchy skin, blisters on older animals, and bald spots on their fur. If your outdoor pet is cold, bring them inside or warm up their area some other way. Don't burn the poor animals skin. … more
