Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a human heating pad and a Pet Bed Warmer?

The Pet Bed Warmer provides a subtle heat and reaches a maximum temperature of 102°F, which is the natural body temperature of dogs and cats. A regular human heating pad will be much too warm and could damage a pet's skin and cause him/her to be afraid of the heat source.

Does the Pet Bed Warmer need to be placed inside a pet bed?

Yes, the Pet Bed Warmer should always be placed inside a pet bed. It should never be used by itself.

How much bedding should be between the Pet Bed Warmer and a pet's body?

There should be at least 1/2 inch of padding between the warmer and a pet's body.

What temperature will a bed reach with the Pet Bed Warmer inside?

The surface of the bed that contains the Pet Bed Warmer will be about 15°F above ambient air temperature until the pet lies on the bed. Then it will warm to about 102°F. The surface temperature depends on how much padding is on the pet bed. If there is a lot of padding, it will be cooler. If the padding is thinner, the surface will be warmer.

Could I use the Pet Bed Warmer outdoors if it's covered and out of the snow?

While our Pet Bed Warmer is an excellent product, it is not designed to output enough heat for the cold outdoor temperatures of winter. Rather, it is designed to elevate the temperature of a pet’s bed that is already around room temperature.

Does it matter which side of the Pet Bed Warmer faces up?

For this particular product, it does not matter which side faces up.

Are the bed warmers waterproof?

The Pet Bed Warmer is water-resistant. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

How long is the cord?

The cord is 5.5 feet long.

Is this warmer pressure sensitive?

The warmer is not pressure sensitive. All K&H heated beds and pads feature dual thermostats and are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature when he/she lies on the pad. This is a function of the insulation provided by a pet’s body, not the weight of the pet.

K&H beds and pads will emit heat anytime they are plugged in so your pet can sense that heat and be drawn to the bed or pad for warmth and comfort. When your pet is not on the pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.

Can I use an extension cord with this product?

MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. This is because they cannot test every extension cord on the market in conjunction with our products for safety. Also, MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product.

How long can a warmer be plugged in?

MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the warmer if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as they do with any electrical appliance. Otherwise, it is designed for 24/7 operation and you can leave it plugged in all day. This item has been certified by MET labs to adhere to strict electrical safety standards.

Is there an off/on switch?

There is not an off/on switch. The warmer is always on when plugged in.

Comforting

K&H Pet Products Pet Bed Warmer is designed for indoor use only, and is suited for comfort, so it never gets too hot. • Just what I needed

    By on

I was looking for a warming pad without a timer for my newborn English Bulldog puppies. This works perfectly! I separate the babies from their mother at night to protect them from accidental smothering and this pad keeps them at the perfect temp: they don't spread out from being too hot nor do they pile up from being cold. This would be great for orphan and rejected infant mammals as well. Deffinately recommend!

  • lasts a long time

I have several of these, my oldest one is at least 10 years old. I use them for my senior kitties to keep their old bones happy. I use them inside only, I always put them under a layer or two of material or under the cat bed itself. There is no adjusting the heat so I adjust with layers. I've never had a problem.

I purchased the small pet warmer for an orphaned kitten we found at our farm we have had plenty of kittens over the years and have always just used a human heating pad worked but was hard to regulate temp. This pad is so much better and he loves it curls rite up on it and sleeps away. Great product.

  • Very nice product for the money

    By on

This item is small, but very nice for the money. Keeps the kitties nice and warm. Also good for the times I give baths. Since cats don't real care for a blow dryer! They have not got colds afterwards! A really plus, to have on hand!

  • Pet bed warmer

    By on

I have the original bed with warmer that my 18 year old cat sleeps in much of the time. We know how almost all cats prefer warmth over cold. Here in CO we can have major changes in the weather any time of year. In the summer using air conditioner to cool off the house . In the winter dropping the heat at night to 60 for the best sleeping. Since her bed is plugged in and on for her comfort almost 24/7, I decided I should buy a backup replacement heat pad. After the original has been in use over 2 years it still works great and no signs of cracking on the vinyl cover. My motto is be prepared. Love the quality of K & H products. The bonus is they are made here in CO.

  • Keeps the kitty comfy

    By on

This is a great product. There are many heated beds etc. but you don't know if your cat or dog will like the bed. With this pad you can use it with a pillow blanket or bed that your friend already likes. Also, it doesn't feel very warm to your touch but it does keep your pet pretty toasty once they lay on it for awhile.

  • Great Value for the price

    By on

I've been trying to find a warming pad for my poor elderly cat and I ran across this one. It's really big because I got the large but there are also several other sizes. It got wet and it didn't affect it at all. K&H recommend it to be used with a pet bed but I put a pillow case on it and several blankets and it works just fine. My poor kitty goes to that spot everytime. It was so easy to find this product on the Chewy site and it was here extremely quick. I can't find one negative thing to say about this product or experience with ordering it.

  • Pet Warmer Surprise

    By on

I was surprised at how efficiently the bed warmer runs! No controls, so was not sure how hot it might get. Not at all!! The temperature is perfect for my cat Olivia who reaaallly loves it!! Maintains a perfect temperature for her. It is a very good buy for the money spent. If she needs a replacement I will order another. I've told my daughter about it and she may order one for her cat! Thank you so much!

  • Works Great!

I have 5 cats and in an effort to keep them off of the furniture have 5 of these heating pads. The cats now much prefer sleeping on the pads instead of our beds or living room furniture. We plug them in when it gets cool in October and leave them plugged in until at least April or whenever it is consistently warmer. I place them under a towel or blanket in a pet bed or on top of an upholstered bench our cats like to sleep on. The heat level is low but warm enough....perfect to leave on all the time and the cats absolutely love it. I have also used these pads for stray outdoor cats in need of heat and shelter, and it is a hit for them, too. If using it outdoors, I recommend making a feral cat shelter, getting a small dog house or something like the K&H outdoor house - an enclosed structure helps contain the heat. This pad will not keep an outside cat warm enough on its own if it's well below freezing, but will certainly take the edge off. … more
