Feeding Kittens: Kittens generally nibble solid foods at 3 - 4 weeks of age. Keep moistened Purina Kitten Chow Nurture available to these kittens at all times. Just add one part liquid to three parts Purina Kitten Chow Nurture, changing frequently to ensure freshness. After weaning, at 6 - 8 weeks of age, kittens will normally eat dry or moistened food at will. Start a self-feeding program, leaving food in dish at all times. Feeding amounts should be adjusted as necessary to help your kitten maintain an ideal body condition. Because kittens continue to develop throughout their first year, it's important that they get the extra nutrition of Purina Kitten Chow Nurture for a full 12 months. After one year of age, transition to the Purina Cat Chow formula that's right for your cat.
Feeding for Reproduction: Purina Kitten Chow Nurture provides the extra nutrition needed by reproducing females in stages of gestation and lactation. Food consumption may vary during gestation, so feed the amount needed to maintain the pregnant female's good body condition. Food intake may double or even quadruple during lactation. Provide adequate fresh water in a clean bowl daily. For your pet's health, see your veterinarian regularly.
Store in a cool, dry place.
Transition Instructions
Changes in your cat’s diet should be made gradually to allow your cat to become accustomed to a new food. Substitute small amounts of the new food for the old food, gradually increasing the amount of the new food while decreasing the old food, over a period of 7 - 10 days. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets.
How do you ensure the quality of your dog and cat food?
We maintain a strict code of standards for buying, storing and processing ingredients used in our pet foods. These standards are among the strictest in the pet food industry. You can feed our food with confidence, knowing the Purina commitment to quality provides the best possible nutrition for your pet.
Do you test your dog and cat food for aflatoxins?
Yes. We have a meticulous quality assurance program for every incoming load of dog and cat food ingredients. We have ingredient specialists at each of our North American Purina pet food manufacturing facilities who are trained to sample and analyze incoming grain. Our grain testing program helps ensure only high-quality grains are used in our products. This testing is part of our comprehensive food safety and HACCP programs We maintain a strict code of standards for buying, storing and processing ingredients used in Purina pet foods, including grains. Every supplier of ingredients for Purina pet food must meet stringent standards for ingredient specification, product safety, sanitation and good manufacturing practices. Our quality assurance standards are among the strictest in the pet food industry.
Where is your dog and cat food manufactured?
99% of Purina pet food products sold in the U.S. are manufactured in our own facilities in the U.S.
Why does your dog and cat food contain colors?
Although dogs and cats are unable to distinguish color, we know that most pet owners consider the product’s appearance when purchasing food for their pet. Artificial coloring is added to maintain a more desirable and consistent appearance. All colorings used in our pet foods are approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Where are your ingredients sourced from? Are they sourced from China?
The vast majority of ingredients used in Purina brand products are sourced from the United States. As with other food companies, we do source a limited amount of ingredients from China. These ingredients, which are primarily essential nutrients, such as taurine and B vitamins, are not commonly available in the USA or other countries in the quantities we need.
Why use corn in dog and cat food? Is corn a filler?
“Filler” may be defined as feed ingredients for pet food with little or no nutritional value. Every ingredient in our formulas has a valuable function and plays a part in providing an excellent source of nutrition to your pet. When properly cooked, corn provides a highly digestible source of carbohydrate, essential fatty acids and protein, and thus, is not considered filler. Corn also has among the highest level of natural antioxidants of any grains. Purina only uses the same grades of corn traditionally used in human food products.
Does your dog and cat food contain GMO grains?
It is likely that our pet food contains GMO grains because genetically modified grain and grain products constitute a significant portion of the supply of grain available throughout the U.S. for both human and pet foods. U.S. grain handling and distribution practices result in a co-mingling of supply, which results in a loss of identity preservation. The FDA recognizes the safety and equivalence of products derived from U.S.-approved varieties of genetically modified grain, so there is no reason to exclude it from the general supply. In addition, the FDA does not require products containing GMO grains to bear additional labeling.
What is propylene glycol? Is it similar to antifreeze?
Each product is formulated with the correct balance of ingredients, each with a specific purpose. We use propylene glycol to help keep semi-moist kibbles in Dog & Cat food soft and moist. Propylene glycol is quite different from ethylene glycol, the anti-freeze used in automobiles. Propylene glycol is approved as a food additive in human food and in feed for animals, except cats, in the U.S. and Canada. Ethylene glycol — not propylene glycol — is the active compound in most automobile radiator anti-freeze solutions, and is toxic to animals and humans when ingested. Propylene glycol has a different molecular structure, giving it different properties and allowing it to be used safely in animal feed, except for cats, as well as in human foods, such as cake mixes, salad dressings, soft drinks, popcorn, food coloring, fat-free ice cream and sour cream. Propylene glycol can be used as a non-toxic anti-freeze, just as salt can be used as an "anti-freeze." The differences in the molecular make-up of propylene glycol and ethylene glycol have significantly different impacts on health and safety for humans and pets. Propylene glycol is approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Why do you use by-products in dog and cat food?
By-products are defined as the co-product of a primary product and are usually portions of the animal not always consumed by people in the U.S. By-products are an excellent source of protein and other nutrients. By-products in pet foods that meet Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines come from clean animal parts other than meat, such as the liver, kidney and other organs. Purina purchases all by-products from USDA-inspected plants. They must meet stringent criteria for nutrient content, production and quality assurance.
Why do you use chicken by-product or poultry meal in dog and cat food?
Poultry meal (including chicken by-product meal) is a rich source of many of the nutrients your pet needs in a complete and balanced diet. Poultry by-products can provide a rich source of protein and healthy fats in addition to essential vitamins and minerals. In fact, poultry by-product meal can contain between 60% and 70% protein. The nutritious poultry by-products we use in our pet foods are high-quality ingredients.
What is animal digest?
Animal digest is often considered a substandard pet food ingredient. In some cases, this is because the word "digest" is mistakenly thought to describe the contents of the digestive tract. The word "digest" in "animal digest" refers to the digestive process used in production, not the ingredients. The process starts with animal protein such as muscle and soft tissue supplied by USDA-inspected facilities. These ingredients are processed in order to break them down, similar to the process of digestion in the body. The resulting digest is a liquid, but can also be made into a paste or powder.Animal digest is a high-quality ingredient that provides an excellent source of protein and enhances the palatability of Dog & Cat foods.
Why don’t you utilize a natural source of Vitamin K instead of menadione?
The basic story about the dangers of Menadione has emerged at various times during the past decades as something of an urban legend in the pet food industry and are not research-based. In fact, numerous research studies and nutritional textbooks have identified Menadione as a safe and effective means of providing the important nutrient Vitamin K to Dogs & Cats. Menadione has been commonly used in pet foods for approximately 25 years with no documented negative health effects. Menadione is a stable source of the essential nutrient vitamin K. Vitamin K provides the following nutritional benefits: it is required for the synthesis of a number of body proteins, most notably the proteins responsible for normal blood clotting.
How do I know how to feed my dog or cat? How do I know if my dog/cat is overweight?
Feeding your pet is one of the most important ways you can care for him. Once you have chosen the right food for your pet, you can develop a plan for portioning and scheduling. For more information, check your product package for specific feeding amounts. All of our Dog & Cat foods come with feeding instructions to help you properly feed your pet depending on his size, but certain types of pets may require specialized foods to help them maintain an ideal body condition.
What is a complete and balanced nutrition in dog or cat food?
Pet food makes up the entirety of a pet’s diet, so it needs to deliver all of the nutrients they need. That’s why pet foods so often use the phrase “complete and balanced.” Every pet food needs to meet federal (FDA) and state regulatory standards before it gets near your dog’s or cat’s bowl.

Kitten Chow for my Ferals
Somehow I got to start feeding five feral cats last year...now down to three, Three Amigos. Where the other two went, I have no idea. Apparently, the mama cat either abandoned them or passed away. They sniffed out the food I put out for the other neighborhood cats....and now have a 'family'.....soon I will have more as there will be more on the way....OMG ! One actually got attached to me and follows me out to the mailbox or greets me on my way back to the house. The other two are still a little 'skiddish' but are now getting less 'skiddish'. I started feeding them Purina Kitten Chow Nurture while there were younger and now they won't eat anything else...they all look good and healthy. Chewy has the best prices for pet foods. Super great place to shop ! ! ! !
Perfect for my foster kittens
I love Purina Kitten Chow. It provides good nutrition that every cat owner can access and afford. This is the chow I offer to my foster kittens when they are old enough. I also give Purina’s wet & dry kitten food to my foster momma kitties who are still nursing and need additional nutrition. Purina brand is well known and does not intimidate (especially) first time cat owners.
Just Starting To Eat Solids
My three fur babies are 7 weeks old and growing so quickly! Mama has been trying to wean them to solids. Their first taste was this kitten chow with a little wet food and water. They ate so much, those round, fat little bellies were so full!
Kaida kitten loves this Kitten Chow!
Kaida arrived in our home as a 4-week old kitten on kitten milk, our vet instructed weaning to soft canned food by 6 weeks, and introducing dry kibbles — this kitten chow is much loved & enjoyed by Kaida! We bought this kitten chow because we like that Purina has a strong community & corporate responsibility mindset, Purina is all about R&D, and their products are always a great bang for the buck. Our kitten really loves this kitten chow — he will high-five, shake hands, sit up like a meerkat, and fetch & rollover like a puppy when we show him a kibble as if it were a treat! Great job, Purina (!) & thank you, Chewy, for making this product deliverable to our doorstep!
kitty hates it, I do too!
After buying this giant bag, Byrd mostly refuses to eat this food. I’ve mixed in a gravy with it that seems to make it palatable but also gives him the absolute smelliest poops. Won’t buy again.
LOVE AFFAIR
This chow tastes so good that the kittens devour it and our adult cat doesn't want to leave his perch in the garage next to the bag for fear of missing out on a few pieces of kibble. It's kind of hilarious, but I miss him being in the house!
awesome product
Purina kitten chow is THE only cat food my kittens will get. I get this and the naturals kind- they like both. In a few months they will switch to adult chow which will be Purina also. Every cat Ive ever had was on Purina food. Most tolerated cat food ever.
I love this food!
I'm just a little kitty so my mom & dad buy this food for me. I've been eating it since I was 8 weeks old. It makes me smarter and gives me the vitamins and minerals I need to grow and develop a healthy body and mind. I love the taste and dive right into my dish when mom or dad fills it.
No more running to the Store!
Love this. The larger bag of Kitten food, cheaper than the store, always available and delivered. My kittens both have great coats and good energy - what's not to like??
Donation to SPCA
Since I don’t actually use this product but donate it and other food to SPCA, I can only rate it by comparing it to their other products I use.
