Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT CAUSES CAT LITTER ODOR?

You don’t have a stinky cat, you have a stinky litter box. And while no animal has pleasant smelling waste, cat litter odor can be extra powerful. There are a variety of factors that make cat litter odor so strong. Cat urine is very concentrated, containing pheromones and hormones used to mark their territory. In addition, as cat urine breaks down, it releases an ammonia odor and mercaptans (the same smell produced by our smelly friend the skunk).

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CONTROL LITTER ODOR?

Controlling or eliminating litter odor is an issue that every cat owner has to tackle. The first step is to make sure your cat is properly trained and has access to a litter box with fresh litter in it. Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. The second step is maintaining the box by removing used litter regularly. Scoop clumps into a Litter Genie® pail to help lock litter and odor away.

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO ELIMINATE LITTER ODORS?

Rule number one is always keep a clean litter box. Having a Litter Genie® pail next to your litter box is a great way to ensure that you have a place to lock away your used litter to keep your home fresh and your cat happy.

HOW MANY LITTER BOXES SHOULD I HAVE?

Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. That will make sure your cat always has a place to go!

MY CAT MISSED THE LITTER BOX, WHAT DO I DO?

If it’s a one time issue, treat the affected area with water, vinegar and mild soap and blot dry. If it’s a repeated issue, consider moving your litter box, retraining your cat, or visiting the vet to make sure it’s not a medical issue.

HOW DEEP SHOULD MY LITTER BE?

Most cats prefer two inches of litter or less. Too deep, and your cat may not like their footing and opt to go to the bathroom elsewhere.

To get started:

  1. Insert the scoop holder in the grooves on either side.
  2. Insert the refill.

Inserting the refill:

  1. Pull the refill’s plastic tab and remove the outer rim.
  2. Start at the notch left by the tab, pull about one foot of film. Then push down the film through the center of the rim and tie a knot at the bottom.
  3. Open the lid and pull the funnel up. A lip around the inside of the unit will be visible. Place the refill so that it sits on the lip. Pull the handle and push the film down into the bottom chamber of the unit.
  4. Push down the funnel and close the lid.

  • Litter Genie is pure genius

I can't say enough good things about this handy litter box accessory. I love that it's simple to use and that you don't have to worry about disposing of the contents for at least a week or longer (if you have one cat). You don't need to purchase the "refills". I simply take the refill holder that is holding the used litter, use one of my scented good 13 gal garbage bags, tuck it down into the space on top of the refill (before you do this look at the refill that is already in the Litter Genie), lift up the grey feature that snaps down on the refill and snap the refill in, pull out the feature on the front of the Litter Genie that allows the waste to fall into the bag, pull the bag down into I can't say enough good things about this handy litter box accessory. If these instructions are confusing, you can simply Google how to replace the refill yourself and a YouTube instructional video will pop up. No need to spend lots of money after you purchase the Litter Genie buying refills when you can replace them yourself. … more

  • Litter Ginnie

    By on

I absolutely love the Litter Ginnie. It's so much better than scooping the litter into the garbage. My only complaint is that the.bags do not hold up to 10 weeks worth of waist like they say it does. I have 1 kitten, he's around 16 months old. I need to change the litter Ginnie bag around every 3 or 4 weeks, which is still good but again, the bags do not hold up to 10 weeks worth of waist. Other than that the Litter Ginnie is awesome!!

  • A must have for ALL cat owners

    By on

A diaper genie for cat litter? Phenomenal. I can't say enough good things about this particular product. Not only does it save me time, it saves me bags. No more overly frequent trips to the outdoor trash can - just put it all in here and I empty it bi-weekly for one cat. It's literally so fantastic - no smell is emitted (until you open the lid of course) and I'm able to clean the litter box more frequently... in fact it encourages it! It's the best invention ever.

  • This. Is so. COOL!!!

    By on

After nesting for my first cat adoption, I came across the Litter Genie right before check out as it was only $10! This thing is absolutely incredible and makes litter clean-up a breeze! I live in an apartment, so any way I can conceal odor within a smaller space was important to me. Not only is this compact and air-tight, but I'm also able to change out and dispose of the full bag without ever being exposed to it. I love the litter scoop trough too. I highly recommend this product!

  • This Really Cuts Down on Odor

    By on

This really contains the odor and makes the clean-up job much easier. I bought a bag of twist ties and use those instead of tying each bag. Just take two twist ties--one for the bag you are disposing and one for the new bag. Put the twist ties about an inch apart and cut (with scissors) between the twist ties. The twist ties come in bags of 100, so they will last a long time. This is the best idea for disposing of the litter ever!

  • Controls odor and design looks streamline

    By on

I bought one to use in my foster room. With kittens I scoop frequently and it does control odor effectively. My last refill only lasted me about a week! Yikes. ( I have the original not the plus) If I used this system throughout my entire house for my cats I would go broke. Plus it is easier to just carry a bag when I am scooping all the boxes rather than have a unit at each box. I do like the fact that the bags are biodegradable. Overall this is a good product. I trust any item the kitten lady recommends.

  • Better Than Expected!

This was purchased on a whim at my local pet store but the price at Chewy is equal to their sale price, so you can't go wrong ordering from here. I have for decades used a small trash can with a grocery bag holder (I made) to keep near the litter box...basically a cheap set up. I would line the small trash can with a grocery store bag, scoop the box, tie the bag in a knot & toss it in the big trash can but it did not control the odor after putting the bag in the big trash can. My system worked okay until we got a new kitten: he is a stinky kitty when he goes...really stinky! My system worked okay until we got a new kitten: he is a stinky kitty when he goes...really stinky! I was at my local pet shop picking up some pouch food for the cats when I saw the Litter Genie and thought why not, my system was failing miserably. It was easy to set up & instructions are not really needed. Mine was a little flimsy on the latching part in the middle: it didn't want to catch. The litter scoop and cup style holder that hangs on the side is completely useless for me because I have a large metal scoop that will not fit in the holder. I prefer the metal scoop due to using clumping litter and constantly breaking plastic scoops. I can't attest to how long the bag roll will last since I just started using it. I am guessing not as long as it would with 1 cat or 2 adult cats due to the kitten that goes more often than an adult. I had my doubts about the odor control but was proven to work & work excellent after the first "go" from the kitten. It has also been a week of use adding to it and absolutely no odor at all! I would like for the opening in the top to be larger but that is probably due to the large scoop I use more so than the actual design since the scoop included was a small one. I highly recommend this if you want zero odor without disposing of the "scoops" from the litter box each time you scoop it. I scoop the litter box every day & many times 2x a day which meant I left the tied bags in the small can until the end of the day & then have to take the smelly bag to the big trash can: yuck! This is much less work and zero odor. It is even worth the extra cost of the bag refills. … more

  • Very impressed

    By on

I wasn't sure if this would work or not, and it turned out it did like a charm! It completely eliminated odors in the room where my little rescue kitten goes a lot. I was getting really tired of smelling the odor whenever I went to change the former little garbage. I am so impressed that I am getting another one for my other area where my other cat goes.

  • Love this product

    By on

Love love love the litter genie. I have one in every litter box area in my home. Scooping out the litter is a breeze, because everything you need is right there with this small container including a side pocket to store the scooper. Blocks odor until I am ready to dump the waste at the end of each week. No more wrestling with bags; having to hold the bag in one hand and scoop with the other. Such a simple thing, but it makes so much difference. It's lightweight and doesn't take up too much real estate in my tiny bathrooms. Highly recommend.

  • NOT BIG ENOUGH

    By on

With four cat's this product just doesn't hold up. I'd need a garbage pail size version to hold the amount of liter clean up I have to do. As well it's made to seem like the cutter will automaticalyl seal the plastic bag. It doesn't you still need to pull alot extra out so you can tie off the bag each time which results in alot of loss of plastic. It does however do a great job of keeping the odor at bay , it's just so small from the opening at the top where you drop in the scoop to the holding capacity.
