Questions & Answers

20 Customer Questions

Do I need to put this charcoal in a mesh bag before placing in canister filter tray ? Can I just pour into tray ?
Answer by ChewyJul 31, 2018
Place the charcoal in a media bag or media basket and rinse thoroughly in cold water to eliminate dust.

Can you use this for a koi pond?
Answer by ChewyAug 13, 2019
This can be used in a pond. Typically, the recommendation is 1/2 cup per 10 gallons of water. Keep in mind, carbon removes some large organic molecules, medications, chlorine, pollutants and toxins, as well as many other types of chemical elements and compounds, but must be changed frequently for full benefits.

Can this activated carbon be used to clean and remove chlorine in drinking water?
Answer by ChewyJul 26, 2018
This filter media is not designed to be used with drinking water filtration. This would effectively filter heavy metals and compounds from water, but it will not provide any biological filtration.

What size are the pieces of carbon?
Answer by ChewyMar 30, 2018
The carbon is approximately 2 to 4 millimeters.

Price great for quantity

Like one other reviewer wrote, I don't think this charcoal is truly activated. If so, it is exceptionally WEAK! This product also comes without a seal. Besides that, Chewy has been a pleasure to work with and getting this amount shipped out would cost more than 6 times the price any where else (although quality MIGHT just be better elsewhere). I bought 2. I'm on my third shipment of two and will find a way to use it - although not for the purpose I intended. Customer service is GREAT!!! I MUST STRESS THAT. I might not recommend this to a friend since it doesn't seem to perform like activated charcoal I have used in the past. To be fair, I used carbon from coconut and this likely came from another source. If someone I knew was in a pinch, then yes, I might tell them about this product (due to the price per quantity) while explaining what my experience was.

carbon filtration

its carbon, what ya need a review for? micro orifices trap impurities, im sure there's more scientific explanation of active charcoal and various types like coconuts. remove chemicals ... not a scientist all i can tell You is that it works! I have a canister on 1 tank and a penguin for other tank that i got rid of the premade cartridge and got 2 after market inserts to make my own filtration media ...way cheaper usually buy 5lb bags at a time off web but when it was time to clean filters my supply was just enuf for the penguin and Chewy shipping is way faster than waiting a week! the Marineland Activated Carbon seems to work great at a slightly higher price maybe 2 or 3 bucks , im 2 weeks past my normal clean out and water is still crystal clear... yup good product may just stick with this brand who knows what ya get off the web, price wish it was a bit cheaper but ohhh went to wash the dust off and the water ran clear! the stuff i use is just black and takes a while to run clear, never looked but must be pre washed? defiantly a bonus!!! well, time to get busy vac n filter clean 2 thumbs up hope the info helps

Great product

I use this in the filters in my turtle tanks. I love the nice big sized container because I change it in 3 tanks every two weeks.

Great product

Sadly, I no longer have fishies since we hit the road in our RV full time. I use this charcoal to stuff old socks to stash in closets, drawers, and cargo compartments, and it works great for that. The bay where we stow our pupper supplies no longer reeks of old dog foot. LOL. I also use it in the bottom of our planter pots.

Large container for a great price

Use this in my house plants. It's nice and fine and much better buy than the little container from the store.
