Instructions

To ensure optimum performance, we recommend the following complete maintenance procedure for the Penguin Power Head at least every 4 weeks.

  • Unplug Power Head. Slip unit up and off aquarium frame. Rotate Exhaust Outlet and gently uncouple Impeller Housing from power unit.

  • Using a clean cloth and/or Marineland Flexi-Brush, clean Magnetic Impeller, Intake Strainer and Impeller Cavity. Do not use soap. Rinse with cold water. NOTE: Magnetic Impeller Assembly is not designed to be taken apart. Attempts to do so may result in malfunction. If Magnetic Impeller Assembly does not rotate freely when clean and in good condition, a replacement should be installed.

  • Reinstall Magnetic Impeller Assembly, Impeller Housing and Lift Tube Adapter. Readjust Flow Diffuser and Air Valve as necessary.

Pre-filter Maintenance: Sponge pre-filter should be cleaned once or twice per month during regular tank maintenance. Best method is to gently squeeze sponge in a bucket or removed tank water during water changes. Never use soap or extremely hot or cold water. Replace sponge if any damage is noticed. Always insure that sponge is reinstalled all the way onto Pre-filter Core. Slots in core should be completely covered to prevent bypass around sponge.

  • Install Adjustable Diffuser: Snap rotating Flow Diffuser onto outside of power head Exhaust Outlet.

  • Install Adjustable Bracket: Slide Adjustable Bracket into channel on top of power head (fits from either side to accommodate right or left mounting).

  • Install Power Head: Locate power head over the Undergravel Lift Tube to determine the proper height. NOTE: When considering height allowance, keep in mind that Impeller Housing and Diffuser must be completely submerged to operate properly. For maximum aeration and circulation, position power head so flow slightly breaks water surface. Cut Undergravel Lift Tube as needed. Make certain Lift Tube is cut straight so that Lift Tube Adapter seals properly and power head remains level.

  • Adjust Lift Tube Adapter/Strainer: Slightly twist and slip Lift Tube Adapter down into Undergravel Lift Tube until properly seated. Adjust Adapter (pull down or push up) to ensure proper sealing at Undergravel Lift Tube. Position power cord in bracket groove.

  • Install Air Control Valve and Tube: Push Air Valve onto one end of Air Tube and press other end firmly into Venturi Collar. Press assembled Air Tube into Bracket Groove (on Adjustable Bracket only) alongside Power Cord. NOTE: If no air is desired, do not install Air Tube. Cover hole with enclosed Venturi Plug. Failure to plug hole will present a danger to fish.

  • Plug in unit: Use a standard 115-volt polarized receptacle. Do not force plug into a non-polarized receptacle. Adapters are available at your local hardware store. CAUTION: Do not allow a Marineland Power Head to operate dry at any time.

  • Optimize Flow: Pivot Exhaust Outlet from side to side and adjust Flow Diffuser. Fine tune airflow by adjusting Air Valve. Clockwise for less air, counterclockwise for more air. Set Diffuser to agitate surface of water. Never point diffuser directly up. If water evaporates and tank level drops, water could be pumped out of the aquarium.

    Outstanding value!

By Kimmie on Apr 10, 2021

This is a great power head filter, that I have used this type for the last 35 years. I bought this filter from Chewy for 28 dollars less than buying from the store!

    Undergravel

By Bobo on Dec 12, 2020

Bought these for my in my 55 gallon undergravel filters. Got tired of air pumps and air tubing all over. I hate replacing airstones every 6-8 months. They are quiet, work great, and keep my tank clear by forcing more water through the gravel than I get with airstones. Need to get a few more for my other tanks.

    Powerful pump

By CarolG on Jan 26, 2021

Plenty of power for the undergravel filter in my 55 gallon aquarium. Thankfully the air valve is adjustable, as it came way too open but is great now.

    Cleaner water

By Forpetessakes on Sep 3, 2020

I installed an old fashioned undergravel filter system it was working okay with the pump and air stones but I added these two power filters in my water is crystal clear I highly recommend them with a undergravel filter system.

    Just what I needed

By DaleS on Jul 18, 2020

I had two of these in a large aquarium that were 20 years old. Because of age the motors were getting weak. I'm glad to see they are still available. I swapped out the new ones with the old ones and they are working great. Great to see the design has not chanced much in 20 years.

    Not a quality product

By Andrew on Jul 27, 2019

I have been running this powerhead in a 20 gallon long tank for 2 months. After 1 month the impeller had worn its shaft down to almost half of the original size. This caused the unit to become extremely noisy and eventually fail to spin. Customer support was nice enough to send a second impeller free of charge, but after another month once again the impeller is beginning to fail in the same way. Spend the extra money and buy a better product.

    Flippy floppy

By Teddy on Oct 27, 2018

The included suction cup mounting option is just plain silly. Once its submerged in your fish tank you will notice that it will hang there at a undesirable angle rendering the device useless. I'm going back to the Top Fin Power head 50 which once mounted with its 4 suction cups is solid.
