Feeding Instructions

Feed to tortoise, along with plenty of fresh clean water. Tortoises will generally consume 1-4% of body weight per day, although food intake will vary due to environmental temperature, activity, and life stage. Provide a good quality forage such as grass or hay or browse. Fresh fruits and vegetables may be provided, but at no more than 20% of the total diet. Soaking the diet is not necessary but may help to acclimate tortoises to the diet.

Thoroughly wash feeding and watering bowls on a regular basis. It is always good practice to wash hands thoroughly after feeding and/or handling pets. This diet is not for human consumption

I thought that it smelled nice. My torts, not so much.

I ordered this tortoise food for about $9 not quite 2 weeks ago. I'm going to lead by saying that as most reptile owners know, 2 weeks is considered to be a MINIMUM acclimation period with any new changes to a reptiles habitat or diet so while normally they would've eaten a new food by now if they liked it, it IS still possible that they eat it in the next few weeks. Now that that's out of the way, I will say that I feel like $9 is pretty steep for the amount that you get in the bag. The ingredients are great but from my perspective, that's uncharacteristically high for Chewy. Nonetheless, I've had great experiences with the brand Mazuri so I got it anyhow. Opened the package, it smelled great to me (think fresh grass/ hay/ plant type smell) and there was minimal dust. It was exactly as advertised in regards to packaging and contents. I tried serving it dry first, but my little shelled ones had no interest. Fast forward to 4 days later, I try moistening it as instructed by the bag but still no interest. In fact when it was wet they buried it, which was more comical than anything. Long story short, decent product, but either my shell babies are picky or the pellets just don't taste great to them. I will also add that I was using this as PART of a balanced diet and NOT the only item offered, as I'm sure all owners do. Worth trying and will keep offering until it's gone, but likely won't buy again. … more

    vet recommended for picky eater

    By on

I recently rescued a box turtle who wasn't really eating, so the vet suggested this food. My box turtle hasn't really shown any interest in it as of yet. I have used water to soften it for him, but he prefers strawberries for now. The quality seems really good for this food. I just I found a super picky eater. :)

    Overpriced for small bag

    By on

The tortoise food does not soften very easily with water. It is small pellets. My tortoises are used to eating the food mushed up. I will go back to buying it from Mazuri. It may work for smaller tortoises. Mine are medium sized and 20 years old.

Not a hit in Henrietta's hutch

    By on

Granted my tortoise, Henrietta, has been raised on "real" food but she didn't even touch these pellets. Though they might be a good supplement to her diet, but no dice. Will be donating to the local animal shelter.

    Sulcata tortoise

    By on

I originally bought a bag of large pellets. My tortoise would eat them if I soaked them first in some water, but she didn't seem to enjoy them. I purchased a bag of these smaller pellets and she gulps them down. I'm ordering more.

    Good Product

    By on

I bought this as one of my box turtles has a deformed beak (rescue), and eating Whole Foods for him is difficult. I halfway soak this for him and pair it with dandelion greens and a berry or two. He enjoys it and my other bodies are catching on to it as well. For sure recommend for MBD boxies

    Not as pictured

    By on

The photo on the website shows large, beige, rounded, finer milled pellets, however what I received looked more like bunny sized pellets, mich darker, and definitely more fibrous. I hope its the same formula as what I’ve purchased previously for my box turtles.
