What is compounding?
Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.
Why do some pets need compounded drugs?
Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:
- Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
- Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
- Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.
Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

Try the tuna flavor for a cat!
I was really nervous about getting this because the reviews were so bad, especially for a cat. My cat Watson is very sick and needs this medication. My vet said no matter how it is administered it’s bitter. So I was prepared for the worse. It came today, Watson had just finished eating and I gave him the first dose, tuna flavored. Much to my surprise, he didn’t fight me once he tasted it. Not only did he bath his face after the dose, he started eating again! Just make sure to pick the TUNA flavor for a cat!!
yes it’s icky
To all those complaining it is gross. There is no yummy metronidazole out there. It helps my baby who can’t take pills. Gross, but better than a gross tablet getting stuck on the tongue
Horrible taste!
So disappointed in this compound. This was our first time to go through the Chewy Pharmacy. As a rescue group we have had dozens of compounded meds and this was the toughest to give. It became so difficult to give to him we had to stop and order from a pharmacy we have used in the past. I was thrilled to be able to order from Chewy and even more excited about the fast delivery. Unfortunately it just didn't work for us.
My Cats Hate This
I ordered this on the day before Thanksgiving and wasn't expecting to receive it until the following week, but it came on the 27th! Quick turnaround! Was hoping this compounded liquid med (chicken flavored) would be easier to feed compared to the pills, but I was wrong. My cats hate it so much, they were drooling and whining. I feel terrible that I have to give them this med twice a day for 10 days. Also, both of the two small syringes that come with the bottles are very flimsy and broke after the the first day of use.
Bitterest drug EVER
The liquid tastes AWFUL, taste it. One drop and I could taste it ALL day. Mix it with a lot of chicken broth and syringe it down their throat a swallow at a time. Follow with their food.
Used as prevention of IBS episode
Yorkie has IBS that is partially controlled by diet but flare-ups happen. If this is given upon the first rejected meal, the episode can usually be stopped from developing.
100 MG Tuna Flavor
Unfortunately, Chewy only carries the 100 MG in Tuna. I purchased it but my dog hates the taste of it. I had to buy from a competitor and trash the Tuna. I would guess cats would like it.
My cats hate this
I got this because it was chicken flavored and pilling can be a challenge. But my cats HATE this. It made them drip huge gobs of disgusting drool and they seem desperate to get rid of the taste. They whined and screamed and scratched. They are looking at me now like I betrayed them. I can’t believe I am supposed to do this twice a day for 7 days! I hope they can forgive me.
My dog hated the beef flavor
I wish my dog liked this as pilling him has been a challenge at times. My vet said I could try giving a low dose everyday and thought this would be helpful. Too bad he hates it.
Thank You, Chewy!
One of my cats requires compounded metronidazole. He has IBS. I'm so grateful that I can get it from Chewy now. If I were going to give any criticism, I wish it came with a different stopper as this on will drip if I'm not dispensing it into a syringe quick enough.
