Measure the width of the opening where your gate will be used.
While holding the gate with the locking bar toward you (numbers will be upright), lift the locking bar and slide the locking pin into the slot that matches the opening size.
Push down on the locking bar. This should put pressure on the 4 rubber bumpers holding the gate in place. If the gate is still loose in the opening, move the locking pin to the next slot until you get a good, solid fit in the opening. Do not force the locking bar down. This could put too much pressure on the gate, causing damage to your opening, the gate, or both. (The locking bar will have a slight bow. However, if the bow is large, ease off one slot, making sure it still has a good, solid hold in the opening).
To open the gate, simply pull up on the locking bar.
I like everything about the pet gate except how it opens to a wider position or how to close it back. I’m an 80 year old lady maybe that’s what’s wrong!! But I just couldn’t figure out how to get the gate to open or close smoothly. And, in trying to do so, I broke all my nails! But once you do figure out the concept, unfortunately, the gate does not adhere to the door opening as stated. So it’s not really secure & your pet can just push it out of opening. I was going to send them back, I bought 2, but I needed them right away for house construction so I just propped them up against the wall opening. They were pricey which made me all the more so disappointed.
Dog Gate Difficulty
on Feb 27, 2021
We recently adopted a 5 year old puppy mill dog rescue. Because her prior living conditions were extremely difficult and she was never introduced into a home situation, she was scared and wanted to bolt outside when a door was opened. We needed to use doggy gates to help keep her safe. We purchased this particular gate because it was wider than others and strong. Our problem was being able to secure the gate to the wall opening due to the baseboards. The wall stops on the gate were not wide enough to secure the gate to door openings that had baseboards. Otherwise it was as advertised.
Great and very study gate!

I love this gate! It is perfect for my dog...very sturdy and well made. Was at my door in no time! Highly recommend this gate, especially for a large opening in the door. First time ordering from Chewy and will never order from any other place but CHEWY! Great folks to work with!

I've been looking for a gate that was easy to move & yet sturdy that my rambunctious puppy couldn't knock over. I shopped everywhere (not online) but couldn't find what I wanted. I'm so glad I looked at Chewy! This is perfect, just what I needed!
Excellent Height for Stairs
on Jan 29, 2021
I bought this gate to keep my kitty off the stairs and on the 2nd floor as it is mainly my storage area. I put this gate 4 steps up and it has worked like a charm. Kitty is happy with him using 3 stairs and mom is too. Very easy to use (again I don't use these stairs daily so it is not a daily project to get through...I just take down and put back up as needed) my width was 44" and the knotch was a perfect fit.

I needed a simple physical barrier to keep my nearly 11-year-old dog from wandering off our patio, and this serves exactly that purpose. I don't have to worry about him trying to jump over it or knock it over, so I didn't want to shell out for anything fancy. Out of the box, the materials look and feel to be of good quality. Reminds me of gates we had in my house when I was a kid. This gate is mostly just going to sit in one spot, and I don't need it to really perform beyond that, so I'm satisfied. If you have a similar need but are nervous about the bad reviews, as I was, I say go for it.
Lightweight, simple to use
on Jan 26, 2021
We bought this gate as a barrier between a new kitten and older cats, and it worked exactly as advertised. Easy to set-up in a 49” entryway, and surprisingly solid once in place. The rubber stoppers on the ends didn’t mar the paint finish at all. The height allows an adult to step over it as required, which is a consideration since it’s really not something that one would want to put up and take down on frequent occasions.
Good product great value

I have used these for many years. They are the widest I can find. They are a great temporary solution to closing off a doorway or wide hallway. I have read that some people are not happy with the quality. If you want something more permanent you will have to pay more. These gates are a great value and the quality is very good for the price. Mine have lasted for years and I recently bought more for my cottage.
Not “up to 79in”
on Mar 19, 2021
Should have read the fine text because when I read “49-79in” I assumed it would fit my 63in doorway. It barely gets 50in. Super disappointed.

The easy-to-use gate helped contain the guest cat during sleeping hours for the first 2 weeks of my granddaughter's stay. Without permanently anchoring it to the wall, I think it would be adequate for a smaller breed dog too.
