Whenever there is a change of diet, its advisable to slowly introduce the new food by mixing it into the food currently fed. We recommend mixing Newman’s Own pet foods with your current pet food over a period of approximately 2-3 weeks to guarantee that your dog or cat’s digestive system adjusts to the new food. It is important to remember that Newman’s Own pet food ingredients such as fresh natural chicken and organic brown rice, being whole foods, may be richer and may be more nutritionally concentrated than your current food. We always recommend that you contact your veterinarian if your animal has persistent digestive upsets.

FAQ

Are your pet products thoroughly tested?

Yes. All of our pet products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality control and samples are obtained during each production run for analysis and retention for additional evaluation.

Is there any animal testing involved?

No. The only analytical testing done is in a laboratory where animals are NOT allowed. We do "taste testing" with animals awaiting adoption in a local humane society shelter.

I would like to begin feeding Newman’s Own pet food to my dog and cat. I have read that if this is done too fast that intestinal upsets may result. What are your recommendations?

What are the benefits of feeding organic dog and cat foods?

Feeding organic foods eliminates the buildup of residues of chemical additives, preservatives, pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides which have been clinically proven to have adverse health effects on dog's, cat's and in fact all animals including humans.

Can I mix NewmanS Own canned foods with dry foods?

Yes. Canned foods are a great way to add a little variety and "extra" taste to dry foods.

Why do the dry formulas contain soy?

Soy is an excellent low-fat source of bio-available protein that contains antioxidant compounds and amino acids that boost the immune system and decrease levels of LDL cholesterol. We use organic soybean meal in all our dry food formulas. Our team of veterinarians, including a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, felt that organic soybean meal provided an excellent hypoallergenic and concentrated source of many of the essential micro and macro nutrients that animals can benefit from.

What is carrageenan?

Carrageenan is a seaweed extract common in the Atlantic Ocean near Britain, Continental Europe and North America and used as a thickening agent in place of animal-based products like gelatin, which is extracted from animal bones. Seaweed is boiled to extract the carrageenan, and in that sense, carrageenan is completely "natural" and not much different from tomato in its creation.

What Is Taurine and why is it important for my cat's?

Taurine is an essential amino acid for cat's that is found in meat protein. It is a dietary requirement for a good eyesight, heart function, digestion (production of bile salts) and proper reproduction. Taurine is essential in cat's because it is required by the heart and eyes however it is neither manufactured nor available in the body. Therefore, cat's need meat to fulfill this requirement (obligate carnivores), as Taurine is only found in animal proteins such as chicken.

Why does the Advanced Formula, which is recommended for older dog's, have higher protein levels than the Adult Formula?

The advanced is higher in protein than the adult (24 vs. 21%) and is formulated for puppies, active dog's and seniors on the premise that the first 2 groups require higher levels of protein due to increased growth and energy needs and the later because of the decreased intestinal absorption associated with aging.

I looked at the reviews for this flavor on the Chewy site, but despite some of the bad reviews, I ordered it anyway because my overall experience with Newman's Own is really positive, and I think my dog was getting bored with the same old chicken flavor. When the food arrived, there was a foul smell in the box, and one of the cans had a label that was soaked. When I opened that can, the contents had spoiled and liquified -- the smell was awful. There were also several other dented cans, but I don't think the seal is broken. I've gone through two cans so far -- my dog seems to like it well enough, but I'm a little hesitant, and I keep reaching for the chicken flavor instead. I'll eventually use up the beef cans, but I don't think I'll order this flavor again. Chewy is a really convenient service, but I do wonder why every order I receive has several dented cans, even though the boxes and the packaging always arrive just fine - it's like the cans came dented from the factory. Go figure. … more

  • My dog loves this food

My dog was starting to turn her head at eating just dry food back a few months ago. Knowing Newman's Own is a good quality name, we tried a couple of different flavors and she loves meal time once again. We only give her a couple of spoonfuls at each feeding so we cover the can with foil and refrigerate - the food stays nice and moist and soft - doesn't get rock hard like cheaper brands. If my puppy is happy, I'm happy - would definitely recommend this food!!

  • Dented cans full of hard yellow fat

    By on

We all want to feed our beloved dogs nutritious food that is manufactured responsibly by a company we can trust. Seriously, if you can't trust Paul Friggin Newman, who can you trust? Out of 36 cans, 14 were dented. I threw those out. Every single remaining can had huge yellow fat globules along the sides and within the food itself. Really? Really. In the last few months, the quality of this food has declined so drastically that I can no longer recommend it to anyone, nor am I comfortable giving it to my dogs. This sucks because, for a while anyway, this was the best food going. Gotta find another food now...

  • It for overweight dogs

My dogs like this well enough but you can see the fat at the top of the can when you open it. Once refrigerated the contents become quite thick and more difficult to mix with dry kibble.

  • Not liking it

Texture is like beef pudding. Tried the chicken, same thing. Doesn't smell good either. Like Paul Newman's sauces for humans, but won't be buying this dog food again.

  • Good stuff

They like it. Its a pate and i have found some with fat. You take out the fat and you take out taste and other things out that your dog needs. Even the best hamburger that we eat is 80/20 with some fat in it. I mix with dry and 1/2 can water. This is the first time i have seen them lick the stainless bottoms of their dishes. I like it.

  • Loaded with fat/talow and smells rancid.

    By on

Cans are loaded with hardened yellow fat in a large pocket along one side of the meat. The meat is a greyish color, with some spots of completely grey food and some pinkish food. It definitely smells like beef that has gone bad by a week or two when you open the can. Will never order the beef again. Canned in Uruguay, which in and of itself is not a bad thing, but for this product there are some problems.

  • Very Good Food

My Yorkie Alex (13 yrs) has always eaten Newman's own organic wet food, and has thrived on it. But in his old age got finicky, so I changed over to the Organic Beef, and so far, he loves it. I trust the Newman's Brand. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that the beef used in this food comes from Uraguay and not the U.S. However, if you research Uraguay beef, it appears they produce quality beef, so I am trusting that Newman's also did their research before accepting this supplier for their food. Time and Alex's continued health will indicate whether I give it a 5 star rating.
