About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Is this a good choice for a 75lb Goldendoodle or is it likely to be too small?

Will a senior dog with no teeth able to enjoy this toy?
Answer by ChewyJan 07, 2020
A pet with no teeth could possibly use just their paws and tongue however, this may be more difficult. We recommend the Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound Treat Maze Interactive Dog Toy or the Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound Dog Smart Composite Puzzle Dog Toy, which may be easier.

Brick Puzzle

This puzzle was so much fun! My boy figured it out right away despite the fact that he hasn't done flaps before. That doesn't bother me at all. The point for me is does he enjoy doing it, not how long it takes him. Yes, there are pieces that can come off that would be easily chewed but you're supposed to supervise puzzle toys. I put the toy down, sit with him while he does them, take the white bones off to the side as he removes them and as soon as he's done eating the toys are picked up immediately. He's never left alone with a toy like this because I don't want him to develop bad habits and I want to make sure he's never getting frustrated with puzzles. If you don't plan to supervise and your dog is a chewer, this is not the toy for you. When used as intended it is great.

Green Disc Puzzle

I liked the concept of this puzzle as it was a little different than the brick games we already have. Unfortunately the quality is lacking compared to other Outward Hound products; our pup demolished it the first time he tried it. The middle barrier is a flimsy plastic film and he punctured it with one swipe. The outer layer is covered in holes and gouges from him flipping it around to get the treats out. Good concept, poor quality. Would possibly be okay for small dogs.

Very delicate plastic breaks easily

I bought this for my puppy since she loves to figure out puzzle toys, but this is the first one that she ruined. The plastic is not very durable so it does not take much effort to chew through. She has other puzzle toys- including ones made for cats- that have handled her chewing on without breaking for months now. This is a really cute puzzle so I am sad it only lasted one play session.

Red Brick Puzzle

We got the red brick puzzle for our 9 year old Golden Retriever and I was surprised with how long it kept him occupied! The white bone part of the puzzle is removable so I’d watch out if you have a dog that chews or eats anything they get. The only thing I wasn’t satisfied with was the sliding part of the puzzle. If one of the flaps are open and your dog is trying move the sliding part, it’s very likely it will break.

interesting but too many removable parts

I like this line of dog puzzles and this one is set up with sliders and multi-level cups; however, my dog steals the lids and the white caps and will chew them to bits if I don't take them away. Unfortunately, when I use this puzzle, I have to supervise and take parts away several times each use. There are better puzzles than this one for my dog in this line of products. I have 4 different puzzles now since I do like them. If your dog is soft mouthed or won't take the parts then it is a nice puzzle.

She loves it!

I'll admit that Sophie was totally flummoxed by this puzzle for the first wee. Then she got the hang of it. Now, she cries every afternoon until I pub some kibble in the little containers and then attacks the puzzle. What was so hard for her the first week has become just another snack tray. I purchased a level 2 puzzle a couple of weeks ago.

Great Toy for Buns, too

Works great as a foraging toy for bunnies. I hide their pellets in the wells and they don't stop until they get every last one. It's a sturdy plastic but I wouldn't let them straight chew on it--for supervised play only. They have made a few marks in the plastic with their teeth. They toss around the bones and pull off the compartment doors which easily reattach. It's large enough for two 6lb buns to play at the same time.

Did not work for our dog

Our dog loves finding and eating kibble stuffed in kongs and treats hidden in old toys or socks, so we thought this would be great. Wrong. She took the white plastic bone shapes out and carried them to another room to chew on them in peace. No amount of encouraging demos focused her attention on treat-finding. She managed to snap the cover off one of the red pieces and chew on that, too. We had to take it away before she ingested plastic. Not an appropriate toy for her, unfortunately. She is a 23 lb Schnoodle.

Brilliant old dog

Our terrier mix just turned 13. Physically he is slowing down So we looked for something that would work his mind a little. This is an intermediate level puzzle but he sold it the 1st time in under 2 minutes. We thought he might not be interested completing it so quickly, But by adding different variations of where the treats and/or food go he always looks forward to it. Definitely recommended!

Queenie Approved

My human bought this contraption for me as a Christmas present, and I love it! I have the purple one and have spent the last couple of weeks learning how it works. I'm getting better at it every day, and Mama says soon we'll start using the little locky things to make it more challenging. Makes mealtime interesting!
