About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Will a senior dog with no teeth able to enjoy this toy?
Answer by ChewyJan 07, 2020
A pet with no teeth could possibly use just their paws and tongue however, this may be more difficult. We recommend the Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound Treat Maze Interactive Dog Toy or the Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound Dog Smart Composite Puzzle Dog Toy, which may be easier.

Great but sized for a small/medium dog just fyi

My dog has been using snuffle mats for some time but I felt like she was getting bored and would like something with a bit more challenge. Leave the bones off the first time to make it easier. You can half slide the boxes so that the dog is able to see the food underneath, and they will learn to push the boxes. The lid's of the boxes are light and the dog will likely figure those out quickly just be sniffing around them. After my dog mastered the sliding and lid puzzles, I added one bone to the puzzle as well with a special treat in it. It took her some time but she finally got it! :) Now she can do the whole puzzle. This is a great toy for small/medium breeds but I think a large dog would have some trouble.

dog puzzle

I have two Aussies ages 5 and 10. I knew for sure the 5 year old would love it and was almost certain the 10 year old would not. I was right lol. The 5 year old loves it and solved it within 2-3 minutes last night so he got to play twice. He’s obsessed with it and kept wanting to play. My 10 year old has decided he’s not working for food anymore, I guess. We’ll continue to try and see if he takes to it but if that fails the 5 year old will continue to enjoy it.

Great for puppies, and trains the brain!

Got this for my dog, it is great! She loves this and we use it everytime she eats. It gives her a little exercise (she is small so its big compared to her) and definitely engages her brain. She runs around it and flips up the tabs and moves the bones, very entertaining lol. But sometimes (every few days) she gets a little bored with it. We've had it for about 2 and a half months and she wants something new sometimes, because she uses it twice a day. Going to get another one soon so she we can switch it up and it won't be boring for her, but other than that no complaints!

Great fun for all

I was not sure about this for my Staffordshire terrior, but within minutes, he had figured out the easy setting and was flipping the bones to find his breakfast. He tends to be a chewer, but not here. He will sometimes pick the bones up with his teeth, and drop them to get to the kibble, but is pretty gentle with the toy. I flipped it the hard way, and he had no issue here either. A simple game that kept him amused for about half an hour, and us too. He is hard to feed, but has a strong play drive, so we try to incorporate play in his feedings. I almost wish we had started with a level two; this one was so easy to teach and learn for him. I will definitely purchase more of these puzzles for him.

Not durable at all

Unfortunately this puzzle toy did not hold up at all. My 20 lb AussieDoodle pup destroyed this in 5 minutes. First she ripped out the white tops (they didn’t latch on) and started chomping them like Lego blocks. After I took those from her, she ripped off the covers of the treat containers (red blocks) and started to go to town on those. In the end, she enjoyed chewing on plastic for 5 minutes lol.

Brick Puzzle

Unfortunately this did not work well for my French Bulldog. He chewed most of the plastic bones up in the first use while he was trying to get the food out. The puzzle pictured is not the same as the one I purchased. My puzzle is the orange circle with white bones.

Dog loves this game

My older standard poodle loves this game. My younger standard poodle can use it but has trouble with the small white bones in the middle. His bite must be to small . My older poodles do not have as much trouble. Great little game. We love these little puzzles keeps their minds fresh.

Love it!!!

My 13 year old dog needed something to keep her busy while we worked from home for long hours and when the summer heat was too much for long walks. She absolutely loves this and can figure it out without it being too easy and too challenging, plus it’s entertaining for us to watch her mind work!

My dog couldn’t figure it out

I got this awhile back and was so excited to use it but sadly my dog can’t figure it out. I’ve tried a treat as “high value” as hot dogs to him and he still can’t get it unless I help lift up the pieces. He loves getting treats out of kongs and using a bobble toy we have so I thought for sure he would get it. Bummer for us! He lays in front of it and guards it from his feline siblings… lol

A waste of money

Our 8 month old German Shepard enjoyed this the first 2 times and then preceded to eat the white plastic bones. Be careful with the loose pieces. The third and final time we gave this puzzle to him he ripped off the red doors that hid the treats. I would not recommend this to even a moderate chew as it states.
