About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Are dogs meant to use their nose to figure out the puzzle? My dog is a recent front leg amputee, so looking for something to can use her mouth and not necessarily her front paw.
Answer by ChewyDec 17, 2019
Some dogs opt to use their front paws while playing with this puzzle toy, but the entire puzzle can be solved with the nose and mouth.

Nina Ottosson Worker Composite Puzzle by Outward Hound

I have a 2-year-old golden retriever and he absolutely loves this puzzle. He immediately understood how to slide the "flippers" to get a treat but he had to really think about turning the inner circle to get each hidden treat. It did not take him long to learn the concept. It was so much fun watching him figure it out. He gets so exciting when we take the puzzle out (typically during our dinner time). This was the first puzzle he has ever tried. We couldn't be happier. The pieces do not come out so there is no concern about choking on any of the pieces. I would recommend this puzzle for any dog. I would love to get another puzzle of the same quality that is a bit more challenging. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Great fun even for a brief time.

I bought this for my then 6 month old cavaliers King Charles spaniel. It only took him about 10 minutes to figure out how to get the treats. It’s still comical watching him with his paws trying to spin the wheel and move the pieces. He still loves it at a year old but it doesn’t take him long to find all the treats. I need to find one that is a bit more challenging. If you have a dog that loves enrichment and interaction they will have fun with this.

Much trickier, great w my big dogs

I have 2 80 lb bernedoodles and they LOVE puzzle games. We have the level 1 version of this as well as the lvl 2 boxes from a different brand and a few others. This one has so far been the trickiest one for them. Our girl was able to solve it and then clear the board in about 10 minutes her first time, and our boy needed to be shown how before he got it. Not sure if our dogs are just so big that the dexterity of moving the disc in the middle was difficult for them (they use their paws for it, not their noses). But overall, all of the puzzles from Nina Ottosson have been awesome enrichment activities, the dogs love them, they hold up well, they clean up easy - and this one is no exception. It’s definitely in our rotation to keep things interesting!

Now Pawperty of Cat

Bought for the dog. As with most things, the cat felt entitled and it has now become his favorite daily activity. If you have cats/raccoons that have some..less than desirable food-seeking behaviors, would highly recommend challenging them with this puzzle toy!

Great puzzle

My dog loves this game -- once he got the hang of it, we made it super challenging by loading food in the little toggles. Keeps him busy for 15 minutes easily!

Puppy found a shortcut to the treats!

Our puppy has always enjoyed the Tornado puzzle from the collection, so we wanted to try something similar, but harder since he is a little older now. He was able to get the treats from under the “wings” and some of the knobs, but he treated the siding circle in the middle like one of the bones from the easier puzzles and just takes it off and puts it to the side while he gets the rest of the treats. I will probably get him a different one and set this one to the side for awhile so I do not have to worry about him breaking it!

Very good challenge!

This puzzle is a very good challenge for our 2 year old pup. It is definitely difficult which is good for him.

great concept but not durable

We have tried two of this puzzle. The first one lasted about 3 minutes before the large disc on top cracked and came off. Chewy was great and replaced it for us. The second one has the same problem—it was cracked off within a few minutes. I didn’t have the heart to ask Chewy for a refund or replacement again, but I do think it’s a manufacturing defect that it’s not durable enough for the dogs who must need this kind of interactive puzzle. Great concept. I may try the similar one that doesn’t have the large round disc on top.

Highly Entertaining and Durable

We got this for our 9-week old puppy who is pretty intelligent and easily gets bored. He loves it. Without the disc in the center, it's still fairly easy for him to flail and dig at it to get the treats out, but it keeps his focus and he loves to chew and mess with it even without treats in it. This is also the most durable of the Nina Ottosson toys I've purchased, with pieces that don't come off and more durable composite. This toy should last and remain entertaining for awhile. I highly recommend it.

Great brain teaser

My mini-Bernedoodle loves the challenge of finding her food. Some days she won’t eat from her bowl , but when I give her a challenge she goes to town. She has been through a few other levels and this one gave her a little to think about. This is a great puzzle if you have a dog with lots of curiosity.
