About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Frustrating for owner

My dog has other puzzle toys but the design of this one is frustrating for me the owner. Have only had fir two days and my dog was able to remove the tray and she also easily rives the pieces. She will slide them to but she removes them as well .so it's annoying for me the owner to have to reassemble each time want to use. Going to request a return on this one as I soecufically wanted a puzzle that did not have removable pieces. I have other puzzles from this brand And like those much better,. Do not recommend this one if your dog is smart!

Not sturdy enough for a German Shepherd

I had high hopes for this as Loki loves the slide-games. This one requires more thought, so I figured he'd be occupied with it for a little while. Needless to say, he had pieces out within a few minutes. I'm sure it would hold up with a smaller, less rambunctious pup. But it's not a complete loss. I sanitized everything, put it back together, and donated it so another pup can enjoy it.

Challenging for cats, too!

I got this puzzle for my curious and food motivated 1 year old bengal. He figured out how to access the treats within 10 minutes, and after just a few hourd he could successfully get all the treats out within 5 minutes. It slows him down a lot and keeps him entertained. My other kitty wasnt as interested. I'll probably get another puzzle from this same brand!

Not really a puzzle

I really like one of the other puzzles by Nina Ottoson, however this version doesnt really work. My dog just bites the pieces out to get the treats rather than learning to slide and do a puzzle to be rewarded.

perfect for apartment dogs!

This is a game changer! If you’re on the fence, go for it. It’s challenging and engages the nose. Also my 1.5 year old puppy is a chewer and hasn’t destroyed this after a month which is unheard of for any toy so far.

not well thought out

Great puzzle however after the 3rd time our dog figured out how to completely pull out the full tray and get to all of the treats instantly. It now takes him about 5 minutes to get to the right side in order to be able to pull it all out. It would be great if there was some kind if locking mechanism to it

Great for a crazy corgi

Our corgi broke his toe and was going crazy with boredom since he couldn't run and play like he usually does. This toy has been a lifesaver. We feed him breakfast and dinner in it, and he prefers this over a bowl. It took him a little bit to understand it, but after about 6 tries with our help, he figured it out and can do it all by himself. It stimulates his mind and helps him burn a little bit of energy while he eats his meals and puts him in a great mood. He isn't a destructive dog, but he does gently bite the pieces to move them when pawing at them won't work. They have stayed put for him and the level of force he applies with his bite. Definitely would recommend this for a non-crazy chewer dog who needs a bit of stimulation!

fun puzzle

This works well for my dog. She is very motivated and excited to get all the cups to open. There are no removable parts on the top so she cannot take pieces away like some of the other puzzles. I do supervise her and correct her when she wants to pry off a blue slider lid, but that isn't really a big deal, and I only do it so that the puzzle stays nice and useable over time. I have recommended this to a friend.

My puppy loves it!

My 11 months old puppy, boxer/pitbull mix, got it for Christmas and he loves it! For the first two days, I had to help him figure it out. On the third day, he was able to finish it on his own in about 9 mins. Since then, I would let him play with it every few days. Now he is able to finish it in about 5-6 mins. He uses his paws and nose to move the puzzle.

Good for 30ish min of distraction

My dog was not into this on the first try, a bit more confident on the second, and now excited to get her kibble and some treats from this toy! She really loves a puzzle toy (stuffies to pull out, treat balls, etc) and this one is no exception. I put half her kibble in it for at least one meal a day and it usually takes her 30 minutes to get through the whole thing. Adding a few higher value treats into the mix really increased her interest. Now I put maybe 5 pieces of freeze dried salmon total and she is just as engaged. Great for mental stimulation, especially when the weather isn't great and our walks stay short.
