    Brush your dog's teeth!

    I had never brushed my dogs' teeth before, but I wanted to try it. I was thrilled to find a set that had both a finger brush and a regular brush. I used the finger brush for the first few days, then changed to the regular brush. One dog refused to let me near him, period. I used the finger brush for the first few days, then changed to the regular brush. One dog refused to let me near him, period. But the other dog liked the taste of the toothpaste, and has tolerated the brushing, reluctantly but without complaint. Her breath already smells better and her teeth are looking better, too. … more

    Maybe I should have started brushing my ACD's teeth when she was younger, she's now almost 10 months old. Forget the finger brush, it serves pretty much as just protection for my digits as I straddle her and try to pry open her mouth long enough to get the brush in there. Forget the finger brush, it serves pretty much as just protection for my digits as I straddle her and try to pry open her mouth long enough to get the brush in there. Our first attempt didn't start this way, it started with me applying toothpaste to the brush, asking her to go ahhhh (because - I don't know) and ended with toothpaste on her fur up over her eyes and ears, my becoming well educated in the strength of a cattle dog, and realizing I was completely unprepared for how the battle was going to take place. The toothbrush has an odd angle that I suppose for normal creatures might work well, for mine though, it just made it harder to try to slide between her teeth and cheek, forget trying to worm it in on the lingual side. For now, I will continue trying to win the war each day, but following up with a tooth cleaning treat instead which works a lot better for us both. … more
