Bought this to slow down my pit mix at dinner time. I have every slow feeder ever made; but I get tired of washing them and getting them clean with all the weird grooves, crooks, and crannies. Wanted something easy to clean and that I could put in just a regular stainless steel bowl. This looked like it would work perfectly. The first time I put it in his bowl, he grabbed it and sat it off to the side so it literally did not slow him down at all. Waste of money.
The first thing my Rottweiler did, was pick this ball up and move onto the floor. It may work well for a small dog, but not so much for a large breed. It is not as heavy as I had hoped it would be. Therefore, didn't work as well as I had hoped.
Does not slow my fast eater down nearly enough. He almost acts as though 8t isn't even there. I'm going to have to find a different way.
In theory, this product is great. Easy to clean, don't have to replace my pup's cute aesthetic pottery barn bowls with an ugly plastic slow-feeder, easy to clean, etc... however, it is absolutely no match for a little snoot and/or long tongue. I have an applehead chihuahua and he looked at this ball like it was his competition and somehow ate even faster. Ugly plastic slow-feeder it is!
Really looking for a good slow feeder that's not plastic. Thought this would work, but large size is enormous & a gigantic feeding bowl would be needed to utilize.
I was hoping for a slow feeder that would work in an elevated dog bowl, but my greyhound ate around this like it wasn't even there. Until it prevented her from licking up the last few crumbs--at which point she picked it up, dropped it in her bed, and went back to lick the bowl. Might work better for a dog without such a long, pointy nose...
So this thing is a metal ball filled with sand. My dog eats way too fast, hence the reason I tried this product. I'm gonna give it a 5-star because it kinda works. It slows him down, not as much as I'd like but certainly better. I got the smaller size for my smaller dog, it's about the size of a tennis ball. My dog love his balls, but he doesn't try to play with this and he hasn't just taken it out of the bowl either - lol. I like this much better than the puzzle type because I mix his food and I can use his regular food bowl. I just plop this thing on top, smoosh it down a little and it's easy. Also, because I'm using his regular bowl, it doesn't slide across the floor like the other type.
The ball is bigger and lighter weight than I thought it would be, but it works. For the first time ever, our older slower dog finished eating before our young gobbler. He can dislodge the ball from his bowl, but doesn’t seem to bother doing that when there’s food he’s after. I like that this was a good fix for an existing bowl and we didn’t have to buy another bowl.
My dog had difficulty eating around the ball and eventually gave up trying.
I am very happy with my purchase. I have St Bernards that tend to drink fast and eat fast. Putting this in their bowls has made them slow down. I put in water dishes. Rinse when it’s time to eat and put in food bowl
