Optimmune Ophthalmic Ointment is indicated for the treatment of chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS or dry eye) in dogs.
Please contact your veterinarian if the following adverse reactions occur: eye or eyelid inflammations or redness, the mild discomfort of the eye, transient hyperemia, mild hair loss, lid spasm and excessive rubbing.
In the KCS clinical field trial, there were 20 adverse reactions reported out of 132 cases enrolled. The reactions described were primarily ocular and periocular inflammatory reactions. These were likely a failure to completely control the condition, rather than a true "adverse reaction."
On rare occasion, Optimmune Ophthalmic Ointment may be associated with local irritation such as periocular redness, lid spasm, and excessive rubbing. As the eyes of dogs with KCS often demonstrate considerable inflammation, it will be difficult to determine whether this local irritation constitutes a hypersensitivity to Optimmune Ophthalmic Ointment. If this ocular irritation persists beyond 7 days see your vet.
When switching to this medication from another therapeutic agent (e.g., frequent application of an artificial tear preparation), keep in mind that clinical effectiveness is not necessarily apparent immediately after initiation of this medication. Several days to a few weeks may be required before the clinical effects are of sufficient magnitude, such that previously initiated therapy can be safely withdrawn. Abrupt cessation of a therapeutic agent immediately upon initiation can result in rapid clinical relapse, which may be erroneously interpreted as an adverse reaction to the medication. It is recommended that in cases of preexisting viral or fungal ocular infections, this medication is delayed until the infection has been successfully treated.

Optimmune Ophthalmic Ointment is an eye ointment that contains cyclosporine. It is used for the management of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS or dry eye). May also be prescribed for the management of inflammation in another eye condition called chronic superficial keratitis (CSK).
Give Optimmune exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Optimmune is given directly to the eye.
Cyclosporine has broad anti-inflammatory effects that help to reduce damage to the tear glands while also stimulating tear production.
It may take a few weeks to achieve a maximum effect. If there is not improvement or the condition worsens, contact your veterinarian.
My senior rescue came to me with severely dry eyes. He was on his ointment, but at the time I couldn't afford it. I found success using another cheaper ointment but it's been discontinued. This stuff, does work. No doubt BUT it's so expensive and the tube is only half full (which is why I gave 4 stars). I have tried every type of eye ointment and drops out there and unfortunately this is the only thing that gives my baby relief from goopy crusty eyes. It's a shame it has to cost me $60 .
Optimmune works well for extreme dry eye for my dog. He had zero tear production. It is a tiny tube and only lasts 5 or 6 weeks using twice daily. Very expensive at vet, but can save a little buying at Chewy. During winter we supplement treatment with non-RX lubricating drops as well.
disappointed when opening tube and applying it to my dog's eyes noticed that I had to press almost half way before the medicine came out, this tube was half ways full, medicine to expensive I think I'll get it from my veterinarian next time if this happens again, I will definitely stop buying from CHEWY
Great price on this medication and fast shipping. A little cheaper than my local pharmacy and delivered to my door.
My dog has had severe eye problems to the point we thought he would be blind. However after a month of steroids and eye ointment. My back y can see better than I can. He dies have scar tissue in his eyes. But he his much better do to a daily size of ointment.
Before you open the tube press starting at the bottom it will keep the medicine from squirting out and keep the medicine in the refrigerator it will not hurt it and it will come out slowly. It is way to expensive. Hope this helps.
I have found that when you think the tube is depleted, you can get several more doses out of it by using a needle-nose pliers and gently squeezing the tube near the tip!
While the medication works the metal the container is made out of shears allowing the product out. I waste expensive medication each time I use it. Maybe I have to start wrapping it in duct tape or something
Pricey but cleared up my dogs eye!! Mixed with GenTeal on the hour. My dog no longer has goopey eye (bulldog).
I prefer the liquid eye drops to the ointment because dosage is easier. I find I use too much of this. Sometimes, it’s all I can get because the liquid has to be compounded and isn’t always available.
