Biologically Appropriate Commitment

Dogs and cats are built like their ancestors, and that's why all of Orijen's recipes are based on five biologically appropriate principles. They start with a variety of unmatched fresh meat inclusions that are rich in protein. Orijen includes whole prey ratios that naturally provide the nutrients your dog needs. Carbs are limited, but there are plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and cleansing botanicals.

Orijen Dry Dog Food

Whole Prey Foods

In the wild, dogs consume the whole animal to meet their full dietary needs, so Orijen recipes incorporate three whole prey elements in specific ratios.

  • Meat (70−85%) High meat inclusion means all amino acids are provided in natural form, without any synthetic supplements.
  • Edible Bone (5−10%) Bone, marrow and cartilage provide calcium, phosphorus, glucosamine and chondroitin without any artificial additives.
  • Organ Meat (10−15%) Fresh liver and tripe are richly nourishing sources of vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc, and vitamins A, B and D.

Quality, Sustainable Ingredients

Orijen believes you have a right to know where the ingredients in your dog's food come from. From nest-laid eggs and wild northern pike to juicy orchard-grown apples and crisp garden greens, each ingredient is sourced from local producers they know and trust.

Fresh, Whole Food Ingredients

Orijen uses fresh, regional ingredients that are GMO-free and sustainably and ethically produced.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Agree with other owner - change of size and formula NO GOOD! Orijen Original Grain-Free Dry Dog food changed from 28.5 lbs bag to 25 lb bag (with the price adjusted): when we received the new 25 lb bag with our December AutoShip, besides the fact that it's a 25 lbs bag change, the quality of the chow has obviously changed as well: the kibble size is smaller, the texture (surface) is different (smoother now), color darker (more like molasses) and the quality/taste is surely different since my not-picky, always-like-food husky would not even show any interest to this food anymore (compared to before with the 28.5 lb bag, she would jump up and rush to her food bowl once she heard me open the bag at feeding time). Now she would eventually come by, smell around her food bowl and walk away without touching the Orijen Dry Dog food kibble at all, becoming inactive and mopey. We intend to contact both Chewy and Orijen to get down to this. It might still be a better than average premium dog food, but with the price and what our dog is used to, the product might not be the way to go anymore.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Formula Change I have been feeding my two dogs Orijen and Acana for several years, but now that the product is being sourced from the Kentucky plant I have been not been satisfied. The ingredients are no longer top notch and the food itself is smaller and smells terrible. I was really looking forward to the Kentucky plant and the reduced pricing, but unfortunately the changes to the formula were not worth it. Dog food advisor has even reduced the US made Acana food from 5 to 4.5 stars and I imagine the US made Orijen Adult food will soon follow. I am not sure if it's up to Chewy which distributor they source from, but I really hope they decide to switch back to the Canada plant. Until that happens, I cannot recommend this food.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Whatever you did orijen, you lost a customer Ive fed my Lab orijen her entire life, first with the puppy version and this adult original for the next 6 years. Her coat is beautiful and soft, shiny, and she's healthy and energetic as can be. I credit that to high quality food. It was always worth the price for me to have a happy and healthy dog. I put this new formula in her bowl today and she stopped eating. In her entire life I have never seen her stop eating her kibble. She even walked away. Came back took a bite, looked at me like i gave her garbage to eat. She's a lab. She'll eat anything. Except for whatever this "food" is now. To pour salt in the wound, the bag now has 3 pounds LESS food in it! Im really at a loss Orijen...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NEW "Original" is NOT the same-Dog won't touch it My 9 year-old German Shepherd Dog used to LOVE the Orijen Original, which was in the 28.6 bag, and the much larger bag before it was downsized. She's eaten it for at least 6 years. I was assured that the newer size was identical, except that the food was being made in several US plants rather than Canada & would use some local meats. WRONG! This is NOT the Original. This food looks very different: kibbles are much smaller, much darker brown, different smell, which is quite bland and smells like cereal to me. Cuervo used to ADORE her food. Lots of happy dancing at mealtimes. She will now go over 24 hours without touching it-sheer starvation will get her to nibble a few kibbles after 24 hours, then she will eat just a few bites and walk away. There is NOTHING wrong with my dog, but there certainly is with this food. I want my money back-$79 wasted. I hope the animal shelter can use it, because it is doing nothing but taking up space here.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from New Formula "Stinks" In Every Way! I thought my search for a top notch dry dog food was over when I found Origen Original early last year. Then surprise!! Opened my last bag and thought there was a mistake.... The kibble was a much darker color with a strong fishy smell. My dog not only doesn't like it, but it no longer satisfies his appetite. Took online research to learn of the formula change. Wished I had taped it up and shipped it back for a refund or credit. As a conscientious consumer, I expect "good" dog food companies to be upfront when they change their product. Origen is a company I will no longer support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great So Far Just finished switching our english lab pup over from her original puppy food. The breeder used Hills Science Diet so we kept her on it but decided to upgrade to a higher quality food once she switched over to adult, especially since she stopped eating her kibble unless she was really hungry. Now she's often drooling before I can put the dish on the floor and it's one of the most focused times of the day as she waits for me to say "ok" so she can finally dig in. We were a bit worried about how her digestion would react as she tends to have a somewhat sensitive stomach but she's done great on it so far. We transitioned over about 10 days and I did add a little spoonful of pumpkin with breakfast so that may or may not have helped a bit. Hopefully she continues to love this as it's great to see her so excited to eat her food. While it is pricey, I'm a big believer in your health starting with nutrition and getting as much quality as you can reasonably afford. And for now this seems to be a winner for us.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Kentucky version is stinky : ( I badly wanted to like the American version of Orijen "Original," but I think I need to switch my dog to another food. It's different from the Canadian version in appearance, smell, size, and ingredients. I was lucky to have enough of the original "Original" to make the transition. The biggest difference is the odor of the food and the bad breath it has given my dog. Definitely a strong "fishy" whiff comes with each pant into my face that matches the fishy explosion that comes when I open the bag.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What on earth did they do? My dog is really a picky eater. She's never really loved Orijen, but she would eat it more than other brands and it was always highly recommended. Just got our new bag and I knew immediately they changed it. She ate one bowl and hasn't touched it since. I pay a premium price for a premium food. I assume (and possibly incorrectly) that my money helps guarantee the formula not to change. The price on this stuff has only gone up over the years. A price I had no problem paying, but now it is worthless to me. I'm willing to pay more for the "original" formula. If they want to float a "new" formula, then advertise/market it accordingly.
