Feeding Instructions

Each dog is unique and feeding amounts will vary with age and activity. Please use this chart as an initial guide and adjust amounts accordingly. Feed twice daily and always provide your dog with fresh, clean water.

Weight Active Adult Daily Feeding (Cups) Less Active Adult Daily Feeding (Cups)
11 lbs 3/4 1/2
22 lbs 1 1/4 1
44 lbs 2 1 1/3
66 lbs 2 3/4 2
88 lbs 3 1/2 2 1/3
110 lbs 4 2 3/4
132 lbs 4 3/4 3 1/4

Puppies: 1 1/2 - 3 months feed twice adult amount. 3 - 6 months feed 1 1/2 times the adult amount. 6 - 11 months feed 1 1/4 times the adult amount. Gestation: Increase by 25% - 50%. Lactation: Feed free choice.

Transition Instructions

Dogs are often fed the same food, which means a sudden food change makes it difficult for their digestive systems to adapt, which is why it’s important to introduce the new food gradually. Going slowly will give your dog time to adjust to their new food and will also reduce the chances of digestive upset.

Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% old food. Slowly change the proportions over the next 5 - 7 days by gradually increasing the amount of ORIJEN and decreasing the amount of old food. At the end of this transitioning process, you should be feeding 100% ORIJEN.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DOES BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE MEAN?

The Biologically Appropriate™ concept is Simple: mirror the freshness and variety of meats that dogs and cats are evolved to eat.

WHAT DOES WHOLEPREY MEAN?

Nature matched the nutrients in whole prey animals to perfectly meet your dog or cat’s needs. ORIJEN WholePrey represents the evolution of ORIJEN foods, incorporating meats, organs and cartilage in ratios that mirror the natural diet, and eliminate the need for long lists of synthetic ingredients.

WHAT IS MEATMATH?

Biologically Appropriate foods are formulated to match the eating anatomy of the animal they are intended for. As dogs and cats are evolved as carnivores, that means they require high concentrations of meat, high inclusions of fresh meat, and a rich diversity of meat. Is your food Biologically Appropriate™? Answer the 3 meat questions: * HOW MUCH MEAT IS IN THE TOTAL DIET? * HOW MUCH FRESH MEAT? * HOW MANODS CONTAIN BOTANICALS?**

ORIJEN is designed to match the natural diet as closely as is possible in a kibble format. Botanicals are a part of the natural diet for all cats and dogs, and play an important role in bridging the gap between good health and peak conditioning. The botanicals found in ORIJEN are selected by one of North America’s leading Homeopathic Veterinarians.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORIJEN AND ACANA FOODS?

While there are many differences between ACANA and ORIJEN, both diets reflect our belief in the importance of providing diets that are Biologically Appropriate™, using ingredients that are Fresh, Regional, and Never Outsourcing any part of the cooking or packaging of our Brands.

When comparing the 2 brands, let’s ask the 3 Meat Questions: 1. How Much Meat? ORIJEN has 85-90% Meat, while ACANA foods have 50-75%. 2. How Fresh? ORIJEN’s foods have 2/3 Fresh meats and ACANA’s have ½ fresh. 3. How Many Meats? ORIJEN foods have up to 10 meats, while ACANA’s foods feature up to 5.

Put simply, ORIJEN and ACANA foods mimic the natural eating habits of your cat or dog with high fresh meat inclusions and low inclusion of carbohydrates. Although slightly lower in protein than ORIJEN, ACANA provides an unbeatable value and price point that makes Biologically Appropriate™ pet foods accessible to a wide range of pet lovers.

WHY DOESN’T ORIJEN SUPPLEMENT THEIR FOODS WITH AMINO ACIDS AND MINERALS?

Organ meats are a concentrated and natural source of virtually every nutrient your dog needs to thrive, including all essential vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and vital amino acids.

Densely packed with nearly every nutrient, including heavy doses of B vitamins, organ meats such as kidney, liver and tripe are loaded with the minerals phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium and iodine, and provide important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, all of which nourish dogs and cats as nature intended.

Which is why you will find amino acids, including taurine or minerals like calcium and phosphorus on the guaranteed analysis but not on the ingredient list!

HOW IS IT THAT ORIJEN FOODS FEATURE 15-20% FAT, BUT VERY LITTLE FAT IS ADDED TO THE INGREDIENTS?

ORIJEN’s fresh meat inclusions are very high. The 2 largest nutritional components of fresh meat are protein and fat. By using large inclusions of fresh meat we are able to minimize the amount of added fat in our ingredient list.

  • The ONLY FOOD THAT WORKED

My German Shepherd puppy who is 6 1/2 months old, has had a hard time digesting any food without extreme diarrhea and has ruined my front room carpet. We have spent over a thousand $ on testing, even testing on her pancreas, specialty prescription food, cooked easy to digest homemade food, probiotics you name it whatever the vet suggested we bought it for her trying to help her. She has never been fed low quality food or treats. • Done with Orijen

While this food is excellent, it isn't worth the hassle they have created recently in the distribution of their products. I fed this food to my two Labrador Retrievers for the last three years. I was able to purchase it through my local hay & feed store.......until two months ago when they began having trouble getting it from their distributor. Since this was the only place in town that I could get it, they referred me to Chewy.com. I received two bags from Chewy.com and was very happy with their delivery service, but then I received an email from Chewy.com stating that THEY were no longer able to get it. So guess what? • Superb product, but pricey

    By on

I decided to splurge and test if it would help my 2 year old whippet with his sensitive stomach. My experiment did not result in measurable improvements (which means his normal food is not a cause of his intestinal problems). The pups, however, like the food a lot, so I decided to use the kibbles as a treat and a bit of it as a topping for their regular meals. It definitely is a high quality, 5 star product, and I just wish it was more affordable, so I -one star for price. The food actually smells like food (fishy smelling, but in a good way IMHO).

  • nothing but the best for my fur baby

    By on

I absolutely love chewy!!! Fast delivery and the auto shipment is so convenient for me. Chewy has the best prices for food too. I started with Fromm based on a local pet store's recommendation. I started getting chewy to ship the food because of the awesome price point. Unfortunately, Fromm is no longer carried by chewy but I tried Orijen based on reviews. My fur baby is transitioning nicely to orijen and ancana. He seems to be enjoying the food and handling the change. Definitely going to try the flavors In both lines. Thanks chewy!!!

  • For my Shih Tzu

    By on

After 8 months with me, my rescue Shih Tzu was becoming a picky eater! I tried three dry foods but she refused them all, even when I mixed with canned food and some chopped fresh veg. Reading The AllShihTzu book, I noted they recommended Orijen because of its concentrated nutritional value. Now Zeena eats her food with relish, but I wish they made it in "small dog" size. Of course my other dog loves to steal from her --and he's a picky eater too! We have a winner with Orijen.

  • Drool worthy food!

    By on

I recently made the switch to this Orijen food for my dog Penny. After a few weeks of her not being interested in her former food, begrudgingly eating it after it was sitting in her bowl all day, it was time for a change. Now she literally drools waiting for her command to eat. This food smells fresher and more flavorful than any dog food I've purchased so far. The ingredients are top of the line, no meals or high carb fillers. It's worth the higher price tag and cleaning up the puddles of drool!

  • Worth the Price

    By on

My dog has never had an issue with this food. He stays regular. He eats it without any problem. I love that he is getting proper nutrition. Orijen definitely did their research and I'm happy to buy a product with whole, natural ingredients. The price is difficult to swallow, but it's worth every penny. My dog is 70 pounds, so he goes through a 25 pound bag about every 5 weeks.

  • Great Quality

    By on

I have 2 very active 11 months old GSD's. And it was time to give them more and better Protein. I am introducing this new food very slowly, however I already see a difference in the amount they need and the amount of Stool they have. Both is less. My girl was getting finicky with her old food, but she absolutely loves orijen. Yes it is costly, but in the end it's worth it.

  • Excellent product

    By on

My baby loves Orijen and who blames her. It is the best grain free high protein food on the market. Even our vet is impressed with her overall health: teeth, skin, coat, weight, etc. I do use Acana occasionally to provide a different treat but Orijen is the primary staple of her diet. When nothing but the best will do choose Orijen or Acana.

  • Best food yet!

    By on

Our two Jack Russells absolutely LOVE this food! When transitioning them over I'd mix in with their old food...they'd dig around and eat all the Orijen, leaving their old food in the dish. Hope it lives up to the quality and all the positive reviews. VERY disappointed however that Chewy will no longer be carrying it- have emailed Orijen to complain.
