Transition Instructions

Dogs are often fed the same food, which means a sudden food change makes it difficult for their digestive systems to adapt, which is why it’s important to introduce the new food gradually. Going slowly will give your dog time to adjust to their new food and will also reduce the chances of digestive upset.

Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% old food. Slowly change the proportions over the next 5 - 7 days by gradually increasing the amount of ORIJEN and decreasing the amount of old food. At the end of this transitioning process, you should be feeding 100% ORIJEN.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DOES BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE MEAN?

The Biologically Appropriate™ concept is Simple: mirror the freshness and variety of meats that dogs and cats are evolved to eat.

WHAT DOES WHOLEPREY MEAN?

Nature matched the nutrients in whole prey animals to perfectly meet your dog or cat’s needs. ORIJEN WholePrey represents the evolution of ORIJEN foods, incorporating meats, organs and cartilage in ratios that mirror the natural diet, and eliminate the need for long lists of synthetic ingredients.

WHAT IS MEATMATH?

Biologically Appropriate foods are formulated to match the eating anatomy of the animal they are intended for. As dogs and cats are evolved as carnivores, that means they require high concentrations of meat, high inclusions of fresh meat, and a rich diversity of meat. Is your food Biologically Appropriate™? Answer the 3 meat questions: * HOW MUCH MEAT IS IN THE TOTAL DIET? * HOW MUCH FRESH MEAT? * HOW MANODS CONTAIN BOTANICALS?**

ORIJEN is designed to match the natural diet as closely as is possible in a kibble format. Botanicals are a part of the natural diet for all cats and dogs, and play an important role in bridging the gap between good health and peak conditioning. The botanicals found in ORIJEN are selected by one of North America’s leading Homeopathic Veterinarians.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORIJEN AND ACANA FOODS?

While there are many differences between ACANA and ORIJEN, both diets reflect our belief in the importance of providing diets that are Biologically Appropriate™, using ingredients that are Fresh, Regional, and Never Outsourcing any part of the cooking or packaging of our Brands.

When comparing the 2 brands, let’s ask the 3 Meat Questions: 1. How Much Meat? ORIJEN has 85-90% Meat, while ACANA foods have 50-75%. 2. How Fresh? ORIJEN’s foods have 2/3 Fresh meats and ACANA’s have ½ fresh. 3. How Many Meats? ORIJEN foods have up to 10 meats, while ACANA’s foods feature up to 5.

Put simply, ORIJEN and ACANA foods mimic the natural eating habits of your cat or dog with high fresh meat inclusions and low inclusion of carbohydrates. Although slightly lower in protein than ORIJEN, ACANA provides an unbeatable value and price point that makes Biologically Appropriate™ pet foods accessible to a wide range of pet lovers.

WHY DOESN’T ORIJEN SUPPLEMENT THEIR FOODS WITH AMINO ACIDS AND MINERALS?

Organ meats are a concentrated and natural source of virtually every nutrient your dog needs to thrive, including all essential vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and vital amino acids.

Densely packed with nearly every nutrient, including heavy doses of B vitamins, organ meats such as kidney, liver and tripe are loaded with the minerals phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium and iodine, and provide important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, all of which nourish dogs and cats as nature intended.

Which is why you will find amino acids, including taurine or minerals like calcium and phosphorus on the guaranteed analysis but not on the ingredient list!

HOW IS IT THAT ORIJEN FOODS FEATURE 15-20% FAT, BUT VERY LITTLE FAT IS ADDED TO THE INGREDIENTS?

ORIJEN’s fresh meat inclusions are very high. The 2 largest nutritional components of fresh meat are protein and fat. By using large inclusions of fresh meat we are able to minimize the amount of added fat in our ingredient list.

Biologically Appropriate Commitment

Carbs are limited, but there are plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and cleansing botanicals.

Orijen Dry Dog Food

Whole Prey Foods

  • Edible Bone (5−10%) Bone, marrow and cartilage provide calcium, phosphorus, glucosamine and chondroitin without any artificial additives.
  • Organ Meat (10−15%) Fresh liver and tripe are richly nourishing sources of vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc, and vitamins A, B and D.

  • My Siberian husky loves it

This is one of the best brands I have bought, I have been feeding my puppy high quality food ever since I bought it but this one made a big improvement on my puppy he is more active and his coat looks better also he has very sensitive stomach but with this one he has been good now. He loves it so much that my GSD was stealing his food so I had to buy some for my GSD as well

Same review for ACANA's Appalachian Ranch Regional food because the stray pup that showed up in terrible shape loves this Orijen Puppy Formula as much as the ACANA recipe. In case you're thinking, "Of course she loves it ... she was half starved!" this food was given to her a week after watching her pick at her Kibbles & Bits. And after reviewing the ingredient list I can understand why. She's come around amazingly well and weeks later is still loving her new food and home.

Daisy is a picky Yorkie but she likes this. The ingredients are impressive, especially when you compare it to other so called high end brands. This will be her forever food, plus of course some chicken, filet mignon, etc.

  • LOVE it's high quality

I will now try using Orijen as training treats because it may be way too rich for our Shiba Inu puppy. We tried to switch her to Orijen after 2 months of Taste of the Wild, and she's just been sick. DISCLAIMER - I could have fed the Orijen incorrectly [too much too soon, not measured well against old food], and I also mixed Fromm into it, sooo. Orijen is awesome food, but we need to wait until she's older, and I learn to measure.

  • Puppy loves it!

We just got a new puppy and she was the smallest of her litter and just very small in general. The vet thought she was a little underweight but healthy at her wellness exam. The breeder was feeding her a brand I am completely against but grudgingly bought a bag of it bc I was told I have to keep her on it for several weeks before transitioning brands. Well she wouldn't hardly eat that food! She would drink, sniff her food bowl and walk away. I think this is why she is underweight. Finally out of desperation to get her to eat I grabbed a small handful of the Orijen I had waiting for her and she gobbled it right up! Picked out all the pieces from her bowl and left the other kibble. She still sniffs We just got a new puppy and she was the smallest of her litter and just very small in general. • Excellent Dog Food

Although I feed my giant schnauzer a raw diet, she does get a little kibble every day. This is the only kibble I will feed her and she really likes it.

  • not for my puppy

    By on

I wanted to transition my bichon fries puppy to Orijen as soon as possible, given all the healthy and natural claims. This bag is not ideal for small breed dogs because the kibble is larger than the kibble in adult small breed dog food. I had to force my dog to eat this food. He actually would run away from me everytime I opened the bag. The smell is unpleasant and strong, but thats what you want in dog food, right? What I did enjoy about this food is that my puppy had regular bowel movements, not too hard and not too soft. What I learned the hard way: little dogs are finicky eaters and never buy a 25LB bag.

  • Orijen makes some great dog food

I buy this for my puppy and the original for my 2 year old. Most dog food has fillers. These 2 do not. If you don't buy good dog food, you will spend the money on vet bills and medicine. I'm not willing to lose a friend!

  • Best Food, Best Service

    By on

I recently got an email from Chewy stating that Acana has chosen to end their distribution of this food on Chewy and it was so upsetting! The customer service and delivery from Chewy is impeccable! Needless to say, I stocked up on the Orijen in case they don't change their mind but this food is amazing as well. My Mini Schnazuer goes to the bowl of Orijen before eating his bowl of raw food next to it! Expensive but so worth it - would never feed him anything but the best!
