Feeding Instructions

Each dog is unique and feeding amounts will vary with age and activity. Please use this chart as an initial guide and adjust amounts accordingly. Feed twice daily and always provide your dog with fresh, clean water.

Weight Active Adult Daily Feeding (Cups) Less Active Adult Daily Feeding (Cups)
11 lbs 3/4 1/2
22 lbs 1 1/4 1
44 lbs 2 1 1/3
66 lbs 2 3/4 2
88 lbs 3 1/2 2 1/3
110 lbs 4 2 3/4
132 lbs 4 3/4 3 1/4

Puppies: 1 1/2 - 3 months feed twice adult amount. 3 - 6 months feed 1 1/2 times the adult amount. 6 - 11 months feed 1 1/4 times the adult amount. Gestation: Increase by 25% - 50%. Lactation: Feed free choice.

Transition Instructions

Dogs are often fed the same food, which means a sudden food change makes it difficult for their digestive systems to adapt, which is why it’s important to introduce the new food gradually. Going slowly will give your dog time to adjust to their new food and will also reduce the chances of digestive upset.

Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% old food. Slowly change the proportions over the next 5 - 7 days by gradually increasing the amount of ORIJEN and decreasing the amount of old food. At the end of this transitioning process, you should be feeding 100% ORIJEN.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DOES BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE MEAN?

The Biologically Appropriate™ concept is Simple: mirror the freshness and variety of meats that dogs and cats are evolved to eat.

WHAT DOES WHOLEPREY MEAN?

Nature matched the nutrients in whole prey animals to perfectly meet your dog or cat’s needs. ORIJEN WholePrey represents the evolution of ORIJEN foods, incorporating meats, organs and cartilage in ratios that mirror the natural diet, and eliminate the need for long lists of synthetic ingredients.

WHAT IS MEATMATH?

Biologically Appropriate foods are formulated to match the eating anatomy of the animal they are intended for. As dogs and cats are evolved as carnivores, that means they require high concentrations of meat, high inclusions of fresh meat, and a rich diversity of meat. Is your food Biologically Appropriate™? Answer the 3 meat questions: * HOW MUCH MEAT IS IN THE TOTAL DIET? * HOW MUCH FRESH MEAT? * HOW MANODS CONTAIN BOTANICALS?**

ORIJEN is designed to match the natural diet as closely as is possible in a kibble format. Botanicals are a part of the natural diet for all cats and dogs, and play an important role in bridging the gap between good health and peak conditioning. The botanicals found in ORIJEN are selected by one of North America’s leading Homeopathic Veterinarians.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORIJEN AND ACANA FOODS?

While there are many differences between ACANA and ORIJEN, both diets reflect our belief in the importance of providing diets that are Biologically Appropriate™, using ingredients that are Fresh, Regional, and Never Outsourcing any part of the cooking or packaging of our Brands.

When comparing the 2 brands, let’s ask the 3 Meat Questions: 1. How Much Meat? ORIJEN has 85-90% Meat, while ACANA foods have 50-75%. 2. How Fresh? ORIJEN’s foods have 2/3 Fresh meats and ACANA’s have ½ fresh. 3. How Many Meats? ORIJEN foods have up to 10 meats, while ACANA’s foods feature up to 5.

Put simply, ORIJEN and ACANA foods mimic the natural eating habits of your cat or dog with high fresh meat inclusions and low inclusion of carbohydrates. Although slightly lower in protein than ORIJEN, ACANA provides an unbeatable value and price point that makes Biologically Appropriate™ pet foods accessible to a wide range of pet lovers.

WHY DOESN’T ORIJEN SUPPLEMENT THEIR FOODS WITH AMINO ACIDS AND MINERALS?

Organ meats are a concentrated and natural source of virtually every nutrient your dog needs to thrive, including all essential vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and vital amino acids.

Densely packed with nearly every nutrient, including heavy doses of B vitamins, organ meats such as kidney, liver and tripe are loaded with the minerals phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium and iodine, and provide important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, all of which nourish dogs and cats as nature intended.

Which is why you will find amino acids, including taurine or minerals like calcium and phosphorus on the guaranteed analysis but not on the ingredient list!

HOW IS IT THAT ORIJEN FOODS FEATURE 15-20% FAT, BUT VERY LITTLE FAT IS ADDED TO THE INGREDIENTS?

ORIJEN’s fresh meat inclusions are very high. The 2 largest nutritional components of fresh meat are protein and fat. By using large inclusions of fresh meat we are able to minimize the amount of added fat in our ingredient list.

  • Edible Bone (5−10%) Bone, marrow and cartilage provide calcium, phosphorus, glucosamine and chondroitin without any artificial additives.
  • Organ Meat (10−15%) Fresh liver and tripe are richly nourishing sources of vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc, and vitamins A, B and D.

  • Will use Orijen again, but will not order from Chewy

So my rating for Orijen on Chewy is for the quality of the shipment I got from Chewy and is not indicative of the actual product. I have been feeding my dog Orijen for almost a year now and she and I love it. For one, she eats it with gusto. I have also noticed a huge change in her coat and most of her allergies have completely disappeared after switching her from Blue Buffalo Wilderness. I have bought my bags of Orijen from multiple suppliers in different areas of the country and all the kibble has been moist looking and well formed and stable, except when I ordered from Chewy. The food arrived and the kibble is extremely dry to to the point that it's crumbling apart and about 1/4 of what I'm So my rating for Orijen on Chewy is for the quality of the shipment I got from Chewy and is not indicative of the actual product. It smells fine and she's eating if fine, but I will never order Orijen from Chewy again. My bag of Orijen cat food from Chewy was also dry, but not to the extreme of the dog food, and I was able to directly compare the Orijen dog food from my local Agway to that from Chewy and there was a huge difference. I was excited to save money and order Orijen from Chewy and have it delivered to my home, but I will be going back to spending more money to get it locally. … more

  • Great dog food and Chewy customer service

    By on

I recenty received my first bag of Orijen's from mail order Chewy.com. My dogs have been on this brand for 2 years. The expense is worth the health of my dogs, no doubt. I recently moved where this brand was not available, hence trying out mail order. This dog food comes in a foil, vaccuum sealed bag for freshness. My first bag from Chewy came in a box unscathed from shipping, however, the food itself was subpar. Instead of nuggets it was a ground up mess! At approximately $100 bucks for 25 pounds, it is needless to say I was very unhappy. I called Chewy and had the best customer care service ever. They were very understanding, and immediately sent me a replacement bag. As I recenty received my first bag of Orijen's from mail order Chewy.com. My dogs have been on this brand for 2 years. We surmise the food was the last bit packed in the foil bag from the hopper where it is manufactured (which is now manufactured in Kentucky from Canada). It would be impossible for this food to come like this (a ground up mess) due to the nature of its packaging unless it was that last bit in a hopper, or it got run over by a semi truck. Bottom line; Great Dog Food, and mail order provider. If another bag comes like this I will surely post another opinion, as I mentioned after 2 years my food for the dogs has always been perfect. So this is a brand new issue. … more

I have a one-year old Black Lab and this dog food was recommended to me by one of my children who feeds it to his dog. I was stunned by the poor condition of the dog food. It appeared to be exceptionally dry and had in large part simply crumbled to dust. I'm not sure whether this was the result of extremely rough shipment, was the dog food too old (although dated Dec 2018), or some other cause. I have fed the Lab with the dog food adding an egg and some chicken broth to moisten it but it is not usable in any of his food toys as much of it is basically just powder instead of dog food nibbles. • One-time purchase

    By on

I have long resisted buying Orijen dry food because of the steep price. Our 13yo dog is older and bored with his food (Fromm, Merrick, Farmina), so I caved and bought this. He goes nuts for this flavor of Orijen treats, and I thought he might show similar enthusiasm with the kibble. He did. Once. Now he couldn't care less, and avoids eating until he can't hold out any longer. I will stick with the treats as toppers for his kibble, but I won't buy this again.

  • Not happy with this dry dogfood

We have two very small chihuahuas. The smallest one is just under 4 pounds and is almost 14 years old. He is missing some of his teeth. We have previously purchased Halo Spot's Stew for toy and small breed. We were wanting to give our dogs something new for a change. We were disappointed to learn that the Orijen has much larger pieces, and the pieces are very, very hard. Our dogs will not eat it.

  • AMAZING Food!! (and Chewy provides excellent service)

If you're reading this, I assume you're looking for only the best nutrition for your baby, as it isn't an inexpensive choice. BUT! My experience has proven to me that Orijen (I use Regional Red, Six Fish and Tundra) is worth every extra penny!! If you're taking time to read reviews as I do, I'm willing to share my mistakes in hopes that others can avoid similar problems. Since my last puppy in 2003, science and research, and ultimately product choices, in the pet food industry has changed drastically. If you're taking time to read reviews as I do, I'm willing to share my mistakes in hopes that others can avoid similar problems. Since my last puppy in 2003, science and research, and ultimately product choices, in the pet food industry has changed drastically. Sadly, the breeder from whom I purchased my current Lab, wasn't properly educated in food choices for her pups; unfortunately, I followed her advice without question and continued using her recommendation...I know, cringe, bad decision!! Because I had such a positive experience with my breeder in 2003, I thought they're the experts and know best. I was shocked at the difference in how the 2 pups thrived in those crucial early weeks. My baby was experiencing all kinds of problems. Every day, literally, there was something awful going on with my pup. She had chronic ear problems, her coat was dull and thin (a distinctive feature of Labs is their double coat, naturally water-proofed by their body oils), she had chronic red, goopy eyes, constant diarrhea, and she was easily fatigued. Anyone with Labs knows...this is all wrong! I had done extensive genetic testing through Paw Print Genetics at 8 weeks, all with clear results. I also was in touch with 6 out of the 9 families with the other pups from that litter (all using breeder recommended food), and all were having same issues. So I was very confident that the problem was food related. Around 12 weeks, I started doing lots of research and talking to other Lab owners, vets, and well-regarded Lab breeders. I immediately switched from the breeder's food to Orijen. WOW!!Within a week, literally all of those problems completely resolved!! I noticed almost immediately that her attention and focus during training sessions were significantly improved. She became the spunky energetic baby that she is today at 14 months! No more GI issues or allergies at all. The most shocking to me was how instantly my neighbors noticed such a drastic change in her appearance. While our on our walks, I got dozens of questions on what I had done to make her coat so incredibly different and gorgeous! And the only factor that changed was her food...in my experience, Orijen is a perfect choice! Chewy gets it to you quickly to ensure it retains optimal nutrition. Only once did I have a delay in shipping, and I emailed their customer service department. Within 20 minutes, I received a reply letting me know that I'd be receiving a free replacement bag. Excellent service!! … more

  • Only the best for my pup!

    By on

I switched my pup from blue buffalo to regional red due to recommendation by my trainer. It was a little hard for my pup to digest at first as red meats can be a lot, but within a few weeks she was back on schedule. She loves this food. It is working really well for us!

This food is consistently rated 5 stars by DogFoodAdvisor; the ingredients tell the story. My bullies thrive on this kibble.Their coats and eyes shine, they're energetic and playful, and they're growing older gracefully. In life, you usually get what you pay for. • Best Dry Food

    By on

I find this Origen Regional Red to be the best dry food available made from beef meat (not by products), organ and bones with appropriate supplements for my finicky 70 lbs. dog. Shipping from Chewy was fast and the price was great for this pricey item.

  • Best Dog Food!

    By on

My lab mix experienced many allergy issues from Blue buffalo, taste of the wild, Apex and Natural Balance. Zignature seemed to work great for a while ,but she was pooping up to 4 times a day and I was told that meant she wasn't absorbing all the nutrition she needed from the food.. so I looked into Orijen and WOW. Her coat is so shiny and soft, she has a ton of energy even though I feed her less, she only poops 2 times a day now and they're always solid. I will never switch brands again, it may be pricier than other foods, but you feed way less than other brands as well. Highly recommend giving it a chance!!
