About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Fur Baby's Favorite

By far my dog loves this toy the most. It only took her a couple times to figure it out though so I have to find ways to make her engagement last a little longer. I'll probably try freezing peanut butter in there or something.

great intermediate difficulty option

My collies have been really into enrichment puzzles lately and one of my collies needed a harder puzzle. We have an easier version of this one so it was a great transition. The lily pad in the middle has been tough for him since he doesn’t like to use his paws on the puzzle, but he’s figuring it out. It’s a very well put together puzzle

Dog toy teaser

Of course my dog likes this because of treats inside but spinner cap is part of the puzzle and he quickly learned to just LIFT IT up so not a brain teaser really.

Great for smart pups

I have a very smart, high-need-for-stimulation 25-lb mini labradoodle, and she LOVES this puzzle. It took her a few times to get the hang of the lily pad section (which was a good challenge). She plays with it almost every day, and now she can solve it in a few minutes, but that's the longest a puzzle has ever taken her, so I'm happy. It's held up well with no signs of wear & tear after a few months of near-daily use. I give it to her when going out or when I'm stuck in work meetings and it keeps her entertained.

Wish it was more durable!

Well, my 80lb pitbull that has been needing interactive toys absolutely LOVES IT. Only problem is 5 minutes in she already broke one of the swinging covers/fins off. I feel like its only a matter of time before she breaks the rest. Still a great toy and I would recommend for a medium to strong chewer but not for a dog with a history of destroying everything.

Pandemic Puppy’s New Toy

Now that I am having to go into the office 3 days a week, I’ve been trying to find challenging toys for my pup to make his 8 hours go by quicker. I wanted to get the hardest level off the bat, so he wouldn’t out grow it super quick. I add all the treats inside all the peg holes and close all the flip doors. So far so good, he is still figuring it out even though he is super smart. Waiting on the day he learns how to flip it upside down. I will be looking for more of those brain puzzles!

She loves it!

My shepherd mix puppy loves this puzzle over and over again! I let her enjoy it three times in a row each day and she doesn't tire of it. She's getting so fast at finding the Rachel Ray's kibble I put in the pockets, but still gets excited using the puzzle. This one's a winner.

so far so good!

I've had this for about a week, my dog loves it and the material seems to be strong/ is holding up well. My dog solves it pretty fast now that he's figured out how to spin the wheel, but it'll still keep him entertained for a bit, and he seems to like the challenge. He's not super food motivated and rarely eats his food right away unless we make eating 'fun'. Putting some of his kibble in this along with a couple of treats has been working like a charm to get him interested in eating.

Good puzzle

Good puzzle toy. The first one I’ve bought, so I don’t have anything to compare it to. It fits half a cup of puppy food. I have a 7 month old husky. It took her a while to get it the first time. After a couple more times, she’s got the hang of it, and I wish it took her longer. She also has figured out how to cheat it; they are supposed to move the middle to get the food under there, but she’s figured out how to get her tongue under and get that food without moving it.
