About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

My dog "solved" this with brute force due to a design flaw.

By CricketAndLeah on Aug 7, 2021

My 40 lb Border Collie Lab mix used her nose to push the orange pieces underneath the green disc in the middle, exposing the treats underneath and lodging the orange bit under the disc. That's not how it's supposed to work. It was a pain to get them back out. The sliding squares around the edge function fine, but I think most dogs could figure that "puzzle" out very quickly. Unfortunately we only used it a few times before it became pointless -- when your dog only takes 45 seconds to get all the treats out of a puzzle, you might as well just hand them the treats. Despite the design flaw with the orange parts, the materials are pretty durable and withstood a lot of scratching the first 1-2 times My 40 lb Border Collie Lab mix used her nose to push the orange pieces underneath the green disc in the middle, exposing the treats underneath and lodging the orange bit under the disc. Cricket also is a highly curious problem solver with a lot of paw dexterity; other dogs might take longer to paw the squares and circles around. … more

    Challenging Puzzle

By AKEmma on May 22, 2021

I bought this puzzle for our cur-pointer mix. She is very smart and can usually finish these puzzles in less than 5 minutes. Finally, a puzzle that lasts longer! It took my dog almost 20 minutes just to work through the outside edge. The puzzle is sturdy, but as my dog became frustrated with how long it was taking, she figured out how to pop the outside sliding pieces off to get the treats. I did not try the inside circle yet. Moving pieces in and out of the circle with her foot will be challenging for my dog. She prefers to use her mouth when opening puzzles, so it will take some coaching before she can advance to the circle level. Overall a this is a good product. Meh. Try something else

By Stan on Aug 9, 2021

My dog wants to eat this toy. Or at least chew on it. She pulls the sliding pieces off and munches on those rather than the treats underneath

    Multi puzzle Dog Toy

By Diane on Apr 17, 2021

This seemed like a good idea, our seemingly especially clever English springer spaniel likes to learn new things. I was excited to get it, we had two other less challenging Outward Hound puzzles which she mastered quickly and without damage. But this one was hardly challenging. I filled the toy with some kibble and turned on iPhone video to see how long it would take her to get the prizes. It took her 27 seconds to figure out the tiles could be popped out to reach the kibble, no need to slide anything. If I did not take it away from her, she would have finished the kibble and then gone on to chew up the green tiles. I hope others have more luck with it.

    Lots of fun!

By Mimi on Mar 22, 2021

This item is huge! Which I love, lots of places to hide treats or kibble. The green pieces are easy to move, so my german shepherd/husky mix finds the treats at a decent speed. It takes her a while to figure out how to work it out to get to them though. The orange circles are a lot more harder for her to figure out. She gets frustrated quick and stratus to scratch and bite at it and she ended up shoving 2 underneath, but it wasn’t too hard to take them out. Somedays she understands how to get to the treats, others not so much. Overall, amazing puzzle. Keeps my girl busy, just keep a close eye if your dog gets frustrated like my dog, they can possibly break it if they are too rough.

    Not for super chewing pups

By Maggie on May 28, 2021

I didn’t realize with this design how easily the little squares came out of this puzzle. She was also able to move the central square completely and the little orange pieces.

    A Bit of Both

    By flustered247 on May 14, 2021

The outside is super easy for my pupper but the middle has him stumped. I wish it was a little heavier because he slams it around a LOT which is super noisy

    Great concept, poor design

By Luckieladybug on Mar 2, 2021

My Aussie puppy needs a challenge and I thought this was it, but it turns out that this puzzle is more work for me than for him. It's a great idea, but the orange pegs in the middle constantly get stuck underneath the green wheel. It happened on the first day and continues to be a struggle; it's not so simple to dislodge either!
