About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

    Much simpler than I expected

By Cassandra on Oct 7, 2021

It’s okay I guess. My Labrador puppy figured it out in about 2 seconds and it takes her just as long to find every single treat. The levers slide open so easily that some of them open up just in the movement it takes to put it on the floor. Good idea, but little to no real mental stimulation here.

    Good for puppies

By Puzzletoy on Oct 3, 2021

We have had several puzzle toys for our dogs. This one is more on the easier side. It seems well made and they enjoyed it but I can’t make it harder. They already have it figured out.

Not a complete waste of money

By Taylor on Aug 22, 2021

I have a four month old German Shepherd Lab mix and I bought this as something to keep her mentally stimulated. The item seems to work as designed. However, she opens all of the compartments in less than 2 minutes and gets all of the food. She seems to have fun at the time but it doesn't last as long as I was hoping for.

    Well made but too easy

By Nessa on Aug 7, 2021

I was very surprised by how fast my 11 week old beagle puppy figured this puzzle out. Honestly, it takes her less than 3 minutes to get treats out of all the wells, even with the puzzle set up on a stool to make it more challenging. It is solidly made but not the challenge I hoped it would be.

    A little too easy

By Jiminy on Aug 6, 2021

My 1 year old bichon had no trouble figuring this toy out immediately. Still, he likes meal time to be fun, so I fill this up and put it on the floor in my office and he eats his kibble from there when he's hungry. He never eats kibble if it's just in a bowl, so this works as a motivator.

    Good Times!

By Green on Apr 16, 2021

Oh my goodness, this is a great puzzle toy! We got it for our puppy, because she had already figured out the star toy, and she loves it. I really like that there are several different ways to configure it. That way, I can give it to her differently pretty much each time. She hasn’t figured out the hardest way yet, but it’s still new Overall, I’d say well worth it.

    Not very challenging

By Critic on Apr 13, 2021

I bought this thinking my 3-month Labrador would be kept busy for a long time but the food is gone in 5 minutes (going for the advanced version next). Fairly good construction but you need to remove it immediately once the food is gone as it will not withstand much chewing.

    Don't do it

By Boga on Apr 17, 2021

Too easy; no challenge for the boy. He's supposed to be one of the dumbest dogs anyone has met. Granted, boy cannot untangle himself around a tree. HOWEVER. This one took him less than a minute to figure out. Fun? Yes. But longterm toy, I think he's over it.
