Feed your growing small pet hay that is high in fiber, protein and calcium with Oxbow Alfalfa Hay Small Animal Food. Small pets including guinea pigs, rabbits and chinchillas, need hay to help aid in digestion and keep their teeth trim. Oxbow Alfalfa Hay Small Animal Food, a high-fiber legume hay, contains more crude protein, digestible energy and calcium levels than in grass hay, making it ideal for pets 6 months and younger and nursing females. Its succulent taste stimulates appetites and helps ill pets gain weight. Oxbow Alfalfa Hay Small Animal Food makes an excellent treat for healthy adults, but because of its high fiber content, should be given in small pinches only.

Growing Animals (under 6 months): Unlimited amounts, plus free choice grass hay. Mature Animals: Occasional small amounts. Nursing Females: Unlimited amounts in addition to free choice grass hay.
Alfalfa Hay should only be offered carefully to mature rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and prairie dogs due to the higher protein and calcium content. Many vets believe that animals prone to kidney stones, bladder stones or calcium crystals in their urine should always avoid alfalfa.
Alfalfa Hay can be used to help animals gain weight and will give a nice shine to their fur. Elderly animals should be fed foods they enjoy, such as alfalfa, when considering quality of life. Alfalfa Hay can be used in small amounts as an appetite stimulant for thin or convalescing animals. Rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas under 6 months of age can be given Alfalfa Hay daily. After 6 months of age an animal should begin a gradual transition to 100% grass hay such as Oat Hay, Western Timothy, Orchard Grass or Bunny Brome.
How much do I feed daily? Alfalfa Hay can be fed daily to growing animals as 25% of their total dietary intake. Adult animals should be limited to a SMALL pinch as a treat.
After 6 months of age an animal should begin a gradual transition to 100% grass hay such as Oat Hay, Western Timothy, Orchard Grass or Bunny Brome.

Beware of the mess if you tend to keep your hay in a separate container and when moving the hay into the enclosure as well. I don’t mind the “dust” too much because I have use for it but it is very messy so have a broom or mini vacuum on hand.
I have this 9lb box on auto ship- it’s normally pretty good and my three bunnies love it. However, my last two boxes have been very dusty. The current box I’m on is mostly crumbs (like the stuff you’d find at the bottom) with very little useable hay. Inconsistent quality during my experience with this, otherwise it’s a good product. If it happens again I may go back to the local pet stores and spend the few extra dollars to buy what I can see ahead of time.
It has been many years since I had a bunny under the age of one, so I haven't seen alfalfa hay in quite a while. I used to buy it in bales from a local feed store. It's easier to buy it online these days and Oxbow hay is what I usually buy for my adult bunny. Unfortunately, the two bags of alfalfa I have recently bought consist mostly of hay that looks ground up. There are few stems. I add it on top of my young bunny's pellets and she loves it, but hay is not suppose to be like a food topping. I also give her Oxbow timothy and orchard, so she is getting coarse hay, but why is this alfalfa the way it is?
MY rabbit Oreo loves this alfalfa hay! Plan on ordering more.
As a foster mom, I often foster baby bunnies and they need unlimited access to alfalfa hay. I highly recommend Oxbow and wish is was available in larger sized bags like I can purchase the Timothy hay.
We use this as an addition to our house rabbits normal Timothy hay. It encourages her to eat hay and stimulates her appetite for the usual hay. Always great quality hay from Oxbow!
This is my girls favorite hay. I love the box, it lasts a long time and doesn’t seem to dry out.
I ordered a 9lb box of alfalfa since my 5 month old bunny goes through hay like crazy but when it arrived it was mostly dusty flakey stuff (like the stuff at the bottom of every hay bag). About 1/3 of the box was actually usable hay. Made my bunny have sneezing fits
As a horse person, I already have experience with different hay blends. This Alfalfa is very sweet smelling, clean, and fresh. The best quality Alfalfa I've found in small animal Alfalfa options. I can hardly drop it in their cage before they start eating it. Alfalfa is a leafier hay, and is actually a legume, not a traditional "grass" hay like Timothy, Meadow, and Oat Hay. Due to this, the type of hay is pretty different, in that it's not just comprised of stems, but rather is made up of rigid stems with soft leaves. This means that typically the ratio of stems to leaves in each bag may differ from bag to bag. The smaller the bag, the less likely you are to have an even balance of stems and leaves. I see many people complaining about this, so I wanted to provide some insight on why this happens. I offer some Timothy Meadow Hay (also from Oxbow!!) alongside my Alfalfa hay for variety and extra fiber and they seem to like it! The Alfalfa I've purchased from Oxbow has not been dusty at all. It's VERY clean and fresh and smells amazing. Love Oxbow so much! Always so great for my bunnies!
This hay is mainly for baby guineas, and my baby apsolutely Loves her hay, so I truly thought she would devour this alfalfa, but she has turned her nose up to it. (Picky piggy ). So this is my reason for giving only a 4 star, only because of her, not the product.
