Nutritional Information
Ingredients
100% Timothy Hay. Preservative and Additive Free. Loose Hay Contains Stems, Leaves, and Limited Seed Heads.
Western Timothy hay can be fed free - choice to rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, prairie dogs and other herbivores as an alternative to oat hay, brome and orchard grass. Free - choice means that the feed is available at all times. If they finish what you give them, you need to give them more! Hay should be used not only for nutritional purposes, but for mental stimulation and the promotion of natural foraging behavior.
For Oxbow, quality products begin in the field. Oxbow has spent years cultivating relationships and educating its growers about the proper way to nurture and harvest hay specifically for small pets. Then, using an exclusive process, Oxbow hay is inspected, graded, cleaned and sorted to ensure only the best hay is packaged under the Oxbow name.

Could anyone who has received the 50lb box tell me the dimensions or about how big the box is? We live in a small space and I want to make sure I can store it before ordering - thank you!
Answer by BunLover • Mar 08, 2023
I measured it out and it’s 24 L x 18 W x 24 H. It’s very large and honestly I recommend unless you like the smell of hay, to get multiple extra large storage containers
How many ounces would the 50 lb bag be?
And how long is the shelf life on the 50 lb bag?
Answer by • Jan 24, 2018
The 50 pound bag is equivalent to 800 ounces. If stored properly in a cool dark place with good ventilation, the Timothy Hay Food may keep for 6 months or longer.
is this hay dust extracted
Answer by • Nov 01, 2019
This hay has been extracted to reduces fine dust particles
What cut hay is this?
Answer by • Sep 20, 2022
Oxbow uses both first and second cutting hay. First cutting hay typically has more stems with larger seed heads. The second cutting is more likely to be leafier and softer with more brown leaves and smaller seed heads. Rather than sell hay by cutting, Oxbow strives to harvest all hay early in its growth cycle – when specific product attributes are most likely to meet the needs and preferences of most small herbivores.
This is the second time I received poor quality hay from oxbow. I have 10 rescued rabbits that will not eat this.
The Timothy Hay is either old or cut from the edge of the field. I might as well purchase straw which like this Timothy hay delivered has NO nutritional value. I ordered a different brand from chewy that was lush and green.
I believe this huge box could possibly sit on the shelf maybe a little longer than it should.

This is 1st cut hay.
Nice hay very green not much dust that I have seen... But I will not be ordering it again. I love Oxbow products but this is 1st cut hay.. Nothing wrong with it. My piggy just don't like it. He wants 3rd cut hay. But if yours lil pet likes 1st cut I would recommend it.

Chinchillas like it
My chinchillas all like it and eat it well.
Once in a while, the hay will not be quite as fresh as it should be when we get it. Otherwise it’s usually good. The ziplock top helps to keep it fresher longer after opening.

Product DIFFERS based on weight
ZERO stars for the 25 lb bag, 5 stars for smaller bags.
WHY???
The product description does not state the difference that exists, The 25 lb bag has UNCUT hay whereas the 9 lb bag contains CUT hay.
I ordered the 25 lb bag of hay without knowing or noticing this, and my rabbit stopped eating hay. When I next ordered hay, the 25 lb bag was not available so I ordered the 9 pound bag. Suddenly my rabbit started eating hay again and her gut got better and I could stop taking her to the vet. When I made my next order the 25 pound bag was available so I ordered it. As soon as I opened the plastic bag I realized the difference in the hay. Sofia with Chewy said she would reach out to have the product description updated so customers are aware of this difference. Any good rabbit owner knows that bunnies do not like change. After months of bad gut health, vet visits and supplements I now know to get the 9 lb bags to have a healthy bunny.

Rabbits will only eat 50%
My rabbits will only eat about 50% of this mixture and leave the more straw like hay uneaten. The same thing happened with a previous order six months ago and I thought it was just the batch but I am afraid my rabbits reject much of this batch as well. I have not had such trouble with other timothy hay providers.

AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
It’s iffy at best. First two boxes were great last two were literally just dust lol definitely no quality control. Oxbow definitely doesn’t care whether it’s good hay or not. I even found clumps of dirt in it. As if it was added to make it weigh more. Lots of brown dry hay as well. What is edible I have to de dust myself so my Guinea pigs don’t sick. At the cost of getting dust and dirt everywhere on my things. It’s a pain but we do what we do for our fur babies

inconsistent
Tho I know it is not all handpicked given the size. This last order was more than half unusable. It was stringy and coarse my buns wouldn’t touch it. Also found some pieces of blue plastic within the bag :(

The only Timothy hay brand I buy
I've fed this brand of Timothy hay to my 4 Guinea pigs for over 6 years. I occasionally add in the different flavors as a treat.

I am not sure what is happening with Oxbow
We have purchased the 25lb or 50lb box of Timothy Hay for years for our guinea pigs. This last year it is really hit or miss what we get. The first box we got that was bad quality I chalked up to a fluke. The next box was great. However I just received another bad box. They hay is very tough and not really editable or even soft enough for bedding. I hate to say it, but at this cost and with no way of knowing what you are getting, I would skip this product.
