Orchard Grass can be fed free choice to rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, prairie dogs and other herbivores as an alternative to timothy, oat hay, and brome. Free - choice means that the feed is available at all times. If they finish what is given, you need to give them more! Hay should not only be used for nutritional purposes, but also for mental stimulation and the promotion of natural foraging behavior.

We have bought Oxbow Orchard Grass Hay for over 5 years and had very little complaints. On occasion there may be small pieces that we threw in the trash. Our rabbit will not eat the small strands which goes to waste. In the last several months the quality has become so poor that we are throwing away more than we are feeding. The last box (9 lbs) was filled with extra short pieces and dust which made a huge mess and it also ended up in the trash. I will not support this product anymore.
The smell was bad even before we opened the bag. We ended up having to toss the whole lot when I started to develop a cough, which turned into acute bronchitis. My partner also started sneezing and coughing, and one of my bunnies started sneezing as well. This was a really bad purchase, and the effects lingered for more than a week. We're not planning on ordering hay online anymore because of this experience.
I found that buying in bulk is always a risk. Whenever I buy the box of 9lbs, there's a higher chance it could be small, leftover dusty pieces. It's happened so often that at this point I've decided to just buy the 90oz bag. The hay is always random as you never know what cut you will get. That's never been a problem. It's only a problem when you get extremely dusty hay that could cause respiratory issues in your pet. My bunnies main hay is Oxbow but, never the boxes again which is unfortunate. I would give 2.5 stars because it's not always bad but, I would say 30% chance of the dusty issue.
I have been buying Oxbow Orchard Hay now for 10 years for our rabbit because he preferred Orchard than Timothy. He likes the crunchiness and taste of it. But, this past couple orders I’ve noticed the hay quality has dramatically changed. It doesn’t look like orchard it looks and feels more like Timothy hay, it’s short brown, crumbles and dusty. My rabbit doesn’t eat it as much as he eats his hay before. I thought may be Oxbox accidentally put Timothy hay in to orchard box, so I ordered a couple more boxes of the 9lbs. hoping I get a different batch, but I got the same poor quality, dusty, crumbs, I don’t think this is orchard hay!
I used this as nesting material for my hens. It smells amazing and they absolutely love it. It's great that it's also a healthy snack for them! My coops smells absolutely amazing.
I have fostered/adopted over 100 guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas over the last 10 years. My go to was always Oxbow. A favorite is the Orchard Grass, because it is “supposed” to be soft and sweet. This latest bag is nothing but straw and dust. My chinchilla won’t touch it. Very disappointed. I will be looking for a better brand of orchard grass.
The hay I received from Chewy was excellent and very fresh. The quality is just so good. My guinea pigs absolutely loved it. Love Chewy and love Oxbow. If you are a guinea pig owner, please consider switching to Oxbow hay products as opposed to other brands, their quality is much better and healthier for guinea pigs.
I think this is the first review I've ever submitted on any product. However, like those of you that have commented, the quality of this grass has continued to deteriorate. Every bag I purchase gets worse. Like you say the amount of dust is ridiculous. The foxtails (which never use to be) increase with each bag and previously I could pick them out as they were attached to a stem. Now it seems as those they are trying to mix them in and so we won't notice. They are now just foxtail tips making it really difficult to get them out. I used to love the orchard grass but no more. Have to find something else.
Used to have super long stands but after C19 it seems like you can’t find hay like that anymore from any major brands. However, Oxbow hay has always been fresh no matter which variety or size I get and my 3 piggies never snub their noses. Will reorder as long as quality remains good and price remain unchanged.
All five guinea pigs love this orchard grass hay. It is sweet and soft and seems to be good quality. The 9 pound bags are a good size, they last a good amount of time but not too heavy to lift.
