I have been using this for guinea pigs for about a year now. The texture (cut) of hay is inconsistent. I am going to find a new brand. You never know if you will get rough 1st cut or softer cuts. One time, there were even sharp sticks in the box. My pigs waste the harder bits and I want to get my money's worth. I am going to try and find one that labels with which cut you get to hopefully have consistency.
I usually buy the 96 Oz bag from the pet store, but figured it made more sense for the price to buy the 9 Lb bag from Chewy and have it delivered. It is nice green hay and the quantity is perfect but it is nothing but dust. It makes me feel as if I need to sneeze and as soon as I started using this stuff, my youngest Guinea pig began breathing heavily and now has a URI and is on antibiotics and nebulizer treatments due to the dust. Do not waste your money or risk the health of your small animals.
This is the best hay I have ever purchased. It is hearty, crunchy and so FRESH. So many flowers which my rabbit loves. This is for the 50lb box. The 25lb boxes I have purchased were more grassy and not as fresh as this. Light green, smells great and bunny LOVES IT! And chewy delivers it in 2 days which is amazing. Go buy this now!!!!
I figured I'd give it another try after a couple of years of trying other sources for my rabbit food. The price of this box of 50 pound Timothy hay went up by 50% over the years. I was hoping it means it's because they have improved the quality of delivered product. Nope. Maybe it's inflation but the quality of oxbow products have gone way down over the past 5+ years. I'm better off getting the hay from the local feed and grain store. Delivery was also slower. The box came nearly a week after it was promised. I should have cancelled the order and gone to the store.
For years I have been buying the 50lb boxes of Timothy hay and they have always been green, soft and fluffy. The past 2 boxes I have received have been hard as sticks and super sharp. I'm honestly nervous to give it to my guinea pig because of hay pokes - this hard hay is no joke. With the price being this high, I expect the hay to be the excellent quality it was about a year ago.
I am very very displeased and appalled by what i just found in my guinea pigs hay i’ve been ordering it in large quantities for awhile now (the 25 pound to be exact) because i own 6 guinea pigs and they go through it very quickly. I never thought i’d find a dead snake in the hay I will not order again and you shouldn’t either!
So, I have been refraining from saying anything--thinking that maybe it's just my pigs being picky. But after reading the reviews, I know I'm not alone! I've ordered Oxbow Western Timothy Hay 25lb box about three times within the last year. I don't remember a problem with my first box. But for the last two boxes, I had to throw away at least 1/2-3/4's the box of Hay. What everyone in the reviews is saying is true! there are super long, thick straws of hay, that my guineas won't touch. Unfortunately, that's the majority of hay that comes in these bulk bags. I've read the thumbnail images and it's interesting to read how we can receive bulk pricing (win)--because it's easier for them to pack the hay as a bale (win, right?)-- Nope! *they arent sifting through the bulk hay*. that means they aren't sifting those larger pieces of hay out of our orders. They say its the perk of bulk! (for them!) more convenient to package hay as a bale, that's the deal. It saves them time and money. So we are paying more money for 20-40% worth of usable hay OR we buy a 10lb bag which has 100% usable hay. :( (lose-lose for us) I really wouldn't recommend. I've wasted so much money.
I wanted to try to order hay in larger quantities because my rabbit goes through hay so fast, ordering large is ideal. This did get delivered quickly though. But the hay isn’t really fresh and I can tell bc it’s not that green and has quite a bit of brown hay. There is A LOT of dust, it’s not just on the top or bottom it was everywhere and got everywhere. My bunny isn’t really eating it and it’s been a few days. I’m disappointed :(
I normally order from this company and haven’t had a problem before, except the past 4 boxes have been the same. It’s hard and thick with a yellowish nasty color. Me sifting through the hay to see if there was any good pieces, because of how brittle it was I accidentally cut myself. I 100% do not recommend. My bun is completely avoiding it and does not eat any of it. Waste of money
Horrible, I thought I would be getting a large amount that is the same quality as the small bags. But this is all stems and barely anything that my tortoise and rabbit can eat.
