Pentoxifylline ER (Generic) Tablets, 400-mg

Pentoxifylline has been used in dogs and cats to treat immune-medicated dermatologic conditions. In horses, pentoxifylline has been used as adjunctive therapy for cutaneous vasculitis, placentitis, atopic dermatitis, endotoxemia, and the treatment of navicular disease.

Your pet may experience some stomach upset, which may lead to vomiting and/or loss of appetite. If these symptoms persist, contact your veterinarian.

Bleeding has been reported in patients treated with Pentoxifylline Extended-Release Tablets with or without concomitant NSAIDS, anticoagulants, or platelet aggregation inhibitors. Increased prothrombin time has been reports in patients concomitantly treated with pentoxifylline and vitamin K antagonists. Monitoring of anticoagulant activity in these patients is recommended when pentoxifylline is introduced or the dose is changed.

Pentoxifylline should be considered contraindicated in patients that have been intolerant to the drug or xanthines in the past and those with cerebral hemorrhage or retinal hemorrhage. It should be used cautiously in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment and those at risk for hemorrhage.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
