Can I give this to my kitten? He's 9 months old.
Answer by ChewyMay 09, 2022
Milk Thistle is a great supplement for both senior and young pets as the removal of toxins in the body is vital for overall health in any pet. In regards to young pets, we do recommend them to be weaned from their mothers prior to starting any herbal supplement such as our Milk Thistle.

Works great!

I have two cats that had high liver enzymes in their recent blood work. The vet suggested Milk thistle. The liver supplement they first gave me, I couldn’t get past their lips! But this is such a small amount, I can get it into them fairly easily. I tried to disguise it in food but they weren’t eating all their food so I resorted to counting out the drops they needed and syringing it in them. Can’t say they are fans of it but since it is once a day, we are managing ok so far. The one cat had repeat blood work since starting this and her numbers have come down almost to the normal range and she is starting to act more like herself which is great to see. She also gained a small amount of weight back too. If your vet recommends milk thistle as a supplement, I would give this a try. Worked well for my two so far!

This product is working

My 9 year old cat (Phoebe) had to have a dental cleaning in early February 2021. Since she was going to be under anesthesia, she had to have pre-op bloodwork done. Everything came back normal EXCEPT for one of her liver numbers, specifically her ALT. It was 143 and the normal range is under 100. The vet was not too concerned, but recommended a blood re-check in 4 weeks. When I took Phoebe back for the re-check, the number jumped to 196. Again, the vet wasn't too concerned, but said that the next step would be to do an ultrasound of the liver to see what might be going on. I scheduled the ultrasound, but did some research when I got home and found that people had success with Milk Thistle. I emailed my vet and asked if we could try milk thistle in lieu of an ultrasound (I always try the least invasive approach with my animals and then step it up as need be). My vet said that would be fine and gave me a prescription for Denamarin. Well, I think the pills must be bitter or something, because Phoebe was not having it. Luckily, Chewy carries the milk thistle drops, so I started giving Phoebe the drops daily mixed in either a lil soup or a churu. She laps them up. So, fast forward to a few weeks ago. I took her to have her blood re-checked and the ALT came down to 181. I am going to continue to give her the drops and will have her bloodwork re-checked again in 6 months, but it appears to have helped. And honestly, when I initially did the research on the ALT numbers, the case studies where pets were in distress showed them having numbers in the 1,000s. I apologize for the lengthy review, but I wanted it to be thorough and I wanted to send the review after the product had been used long enough to give an accurate review.

Thistle for diabetic cat

Honestly, I can not say how it is working because my cat, Puddinhead, was diagnosed with diabetes and just started insulin the other day. I saw this on the Pet Wellbeing site and as it was grouped with the Blood Sugar remedy so I bought it. I want him to get better so anything that helps I will use. We now have many Pet Wellbeing remedies because they are good products. I gave it 4 stars only because i do not know if it will make a difference I can see but altogether I hope and think they will help him.

This truly helped

I have a senior cat that was recently diagnosed with liver disease. She hadn't been eating much, and drinking water more than normal and losing weight so quickly (lost almost 2 pounds in 2 months). After a vet exam and testing, we discovered she had liver disease. Her coat was getting so oily as she had stopped grooming and could not tolerate me using a pet wipe on her or being brushed. We were preparing to say goodbye. I bought this as a last ditch effort, and within days we noticed an improvement. I started by giving her a couple of drops in tuna (human variety), and she scarfed that down. I then started mixing the tuna with canned cat food also adding drops to it. Now she's strictly back on canned cat food, with a couple of drops added to each meal. It's been 2 weeks since receiving it and she's eating well (but still refusing dry food), and has gained some weight back. Although I cannot give her the drops directly, I have added it to her food. She's eating again, drinking a normal amount of water, she's grooming & her coat is soft and shiny again, and her personality is coming back. Her jaundice is also fading away, and I am seeing pink again in her ears. We have not yet brought her back in for more blood work, and will probably wait another month or so. Here's hoping this can give us more time with our sweet girl.

Thankful for a dose for cats

So thankful to find this low dosage for cats and dogs. My 16 year old kitty really needs it. I just wish it came with a syringe marked for drops. Luckily I found one elsewhere

Worked for us!

My 13 year old cat was starting to have issues with his liver. Not life threatening yet, but not good either. One drop a day and he seems to be feeling much better. He’s pleased and so am I.

So far pretty good

I think my cat was surprised by the taste. My only complaint is that since I put it directly in her cheek, I am trying to find a disposable dropper to use. Tried the dropper it comes with and although it worked well, I put it back into the bottle and I think that might not have been a good idea due to germs, I wouldn’t dare put it in her food because if she doesn’t like it, she will never eat that food again.

This was the only supplement/medicine that my cat will take

My six-year-old cat started having poor liver counts this summer. Through my vet, we tried various medications, such as Denamarin, but my sweet cat would not take the pills with a piller! (I was devastated--I've owned cats over the past forty years, and I've never had a cat before this one that I couldn't use a piller with!) Anything that we tried mixing in with his food didn't work, either--he would take one sniff, then walk away. So, thanks so much to all you Chewy customers, because I learned about Milk Thistle in your reviews. I did some research on it, then discussed with my vet, so we decided to try it. I started with one drop in his food the first day, then kept increasing until he was up to the recommended dosage for his weight. He accepted the flavor with no issues. So, even though my cat has not had follow-up testing done yet (that's the only reason I didn't give five stars), as it is too early, I am hoping that this helps him.

Roxy RooRoo and Jaundice please comment and help!

I have to say give your cat pet well being milk thistle to protect your cats liver. I seen this work back and forth as I give this to her and keep her on this. I give it to her I see some pink gums. The more pink you see in the mouth gums and pink in the ears the better there health is. (Yellow gums eyes and ears is a bad sign of Jaundice.) I also give Roxy veti science same 90. As far as denamarin I can't say anything about it? I'm not shore to trust the product or not? If any one has good advice in how to get rid of my cats Jaundice please let me know in holistic medicine. She has Jaundice for 9 months know. My veterinarian told me to give her VETIVEX PHYLYTE INJECTIONS 7.4 I BEEN DOING THIS FOR 9 MONTHS. STILL NO MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS. (Veti science same 90) and (veti science products) the milk thistle is keeping my cat alive. I want her healed well and happy. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS SOME BETTER AND HEALTHER. THANKS
