FAQ

My pets have allergies, can I feed them PetGuard?

Proteins and chemicals in foods can cause reactions in pets. Also, airborne substances such as pollen, dust, mold and contact with paints, plastics, soaps and even grass can cause allergic reactions. PetGuard is free of chemical additives and preservatives and has created a variety of foods with varying sources of protein to accommodate the tastes and sensitivities of our animal companions.

My cat has urinary tract problems. Can I feed her PetGuard products?

The importance of urinary tract health is highly understated in this country. While PetGuard does not have a prescription diet or claim to cure an infection or blockage, we do formulate our products to produce an acidic urine (pH) and contain the essential amino acids (taurine and dl methionine) to help in the prevention of these problems. In all concerns regarding health matters, your veterinarian is the first and best source for treating any illness.

Why doesn't PetGuard state that 'Human Grade Ingredients' are used in your products?

According to the USDA and FDA, it is illegal to use or promote the use of the verbiage ""human grade ingredients"" because there is no legal term as "human grade". PetGuard uses ingredients that we would eat ourselves. The best ingredients that PetGuard uses in the foods we bring to your pets are the result of 25 years of working with our suppliers and careful monitoring of the quality demanded for products manufactured to our specifications.

What are by-products?

Animal by-products include such things as feathers, fur, tendons, hooves and beaks. There are no by-products in any PetGuard product.

Do you use GMO's in your foods?

GMO's (genetically modified organisms) are not used in PetGuard products.

What preservatives are used in PetGuard products?

PetGuard dry foods are preserved with mixed tocopherols and vitamins C and E. These natural preservatives serve 2 functions: they prevent the food from spoiling and they scavenge free radicals which are known to cause cell damage.

What is Ester-C?

Ester-C is calcium ascorbate that is used to deliver Vitamin C. It is metabolized very easily in the body so the vitamin is absorbed into the cells of the body. The strong antioxidant effect prevents cell damage from free radicals.

How do you judge the quality of the beef that you purchase to produce your products?

PetGuard uses Coleman Natural Beef in its beef products. The Coleman name is synonymous with beef that was raised with NO hormones, NO antibiotics, NO steroids and beef that was NEVER fed animal by- products.

Why does the color and texture of your products change from time to time?

Because we use only all natural ingredients in our formulas, the finished products may vary slightly in color or texture. Remember, there are no fillers, artificial colors or flavors in PetGuard foods to assure that every product would look exactly like the one before it.

Explain what are organic foods and why are your products better.

Unlike many foods produced today, organic foods are grown without pesticides or harmful chemical fertilizers. Organic foods do not contain artificial products of any kind. For example, Coleman Beef, which is used exclusively by PetGuard in all its beef dinners, are cattle raised from birth without artificial hormones or antibiotics. The chicken used in PetGuard chicken dinners is USDA hormone-free poultry. Every PetGuard product is prepared from wholesome ingredients including fresh vegetables and whole grains, complete with fiber and nutrients to offer your pet companion a flavorful, highly digestible food free of artificial ingredients and by-products. Just good wholesome food.

What is the shelf life of your products?

All PetGuard products, including all PetGuard supplements, have an expiration date printed on the label or the can. Just like with foods that humans consume, to take advantage of maximum freshness, products should be used in a timely manner.

Their Lifespan Chicken & Brown Rice food takes dogs from puppyhood to their golden years, while their wet foods come in special formulas including grain-free, organic, vegetarian and vegan. Lots of tasty flavors mean your hungry buddy will never get bored, whatever his needs may be!

Easy to Digest and Absorb

No amount of nutrients in your buddy’s food will make a difference if he can’t absorb them. That’s why PetGuard uses chelated minerals for better absorption and avoids artificial preservatives, corn and animal by-products because they can upset your dog’s tummy and keep him from properly processing the nutrition in his food. About PetGuard

PetGuard started making all-natural pet foods during the early natural food movement of the 1970s. They owned a natural foods grocery and soon branched out into making nutritious, whole food-based recipes for the pets of the people who shopped there. They’ve been using ingredients like real meat, chelated minerals and natural preservatives since way before they became popular. They never follow fads, instead focusing on quality ingredients with a natural approach—because healthy eating should never be just a trend, but a way of life!

    Great until

    By on

They seemed really great until I opened one of the cans and it was rancid. The others cans were fine but at almost $4 a can you hate to loose one. It smelled so bad I almost threw up.

He Tried to Eat the Dish!

    By on

My poor 13 year old dachshund is declining from lymphatic cancer, and had stopped eating his old food. I tried giving him a little dish of this PetGuard and he wanted to eat the dish, he ate it so enthusiastically! Such a relief. It's a great texture for his irritated throat. My younger dachshund mix devours it, too. Thank you, PetGuard and Chewy!

And dogs love it. Not too soupy, no bad smell, and my fur babies eat it up. Lick the bowl clean. Pricey but worth it to me.

My dog likes this and I like that it is not gross like some canned food. Seems to be doing well on this food. Being organic is major plus.

My rescue GSP thrives on this food. Wasn't able to get it consistently from my previous supplier so I am hoping it will come consistently from Chewy.

Good stuff, seems to have less water than others.

I highly recommend Petguard Organic. I've tried other organics such as Newmans (good) and ByNature (OK), but this is the best (aside from DIY foods). Two things stand out with PetGuard - it is not as moist (less water), and it does not have a strong smell. My dog loves the stuff too, so that's three. I don't know if the organic stuff is better or not, but my dog does not have as much gas, and since she has a history of cancer, it is worth it to me.

The acupuncture Vet recommended this for my old dog. He was fat and needed a cool food. What ever that means. When I found this dog I started him on this as well. He loves it and I have had no problems. It's a good quality food. I use to buy it in the health food store. It is cheaper here.

    Nutrition and Value

    By on

As with ALL dog food that In have scrutinized, I am dismayed by the lack of ...I guess daily values , as on food for human consumption. This, otherwise, has what we need - enough protein and a good mix of vegetables.
