How many and what size batteries and how long will they last?

This feeder requires 3 D batteries. This feeder will last depending on how often it's used. If used on a daily basis, then it can last approximately 8 months to 1 year.
Will you have to reprogram when you change batteries?

Can it also be used for big dogs like golder retrivers?

This feeder is suitable for cats and dogs of all sizes.
Can a meal be skipped? I don't feed lunch but I can only figure out how to get it down to 1/4 cup but not completely gone.

The programmable feeder can be programmed to feed one, two or all three meals. Start by pressing enter and hold for 2 seconds. Press the up or down arrow keys to select the meal (breakfast/lunch/dinner). Press enter and then the yes or no will flash. Use the arrow keys to select yes or no. Select no to the meal you'd like to skip. When no is selected, the unit will go back to meals flashing. There you can select the next meal to be programmed.

The packaging is more durable than the product

First problem: packaging is excessive, environmentally damaging, and difficult to remove, especially the sticky cling wrap on the lid. Second problem: it's flimsy and keeps coming apart while I'm trying to put it together. Third and worst problem: once I finally had it put together as securely as it gets, put it in place, and manually dispensed a meal to rest the portion size and to show my cat where he'll be getting his meals for the next few days, it took my cat about 2 hours to knock the canister off the base, where upon the flimsy lid popped right off and spilled a week's worth of cat food onto the floor.

Not great for small meals

This auto feeder is not great for dry cat food in small doses. The food does not fully dispense the food unless you give it a good shake - this really defeats the purpose of the auto feeder

Didn't Work

The feeder didn't work, I couldn't get it to dispense food. I had the previous model for 9 years and it worked well. After 9 years though it stopped keeping the correct time and would drop food randomly. I couldn't get the new feeder to work at all. Chewy was great and gave me a refund.

A Pain In The Fluff

I've had this feeder for years. It's reliable and always feeds him on time although I think the portions can be off a little sometimes. It also saves the schedule when the batteries die. The biggest issue is that the lid and the food container don't secure well. If you ever have to move it, or replace the batteries (which are very inconveniently placed on the bottom of the whole unit), the lid or whole container may pop out and food goes EVERYWHERE!

won’t turn on even with new batteries

We got this feeder as a gift in December and just now changed the batteries and it won’t turn on. Correct batteries, placement, ect. Not sure what’s going on. Worked great for 6 months!

Stopped working properly

The feeder worked well at first, but then began dispensing wildly different amounts of food causing the tray to fill completely throughout the day. We'd then have to scoop the food back into the top storage container to prevent our cat from overeating. The feeder eventually stopped dispensing food all together, despite all our efforts to replace the batteries and reset the meal times. We just decided to give up and buy a different feeder.

It works but...

This does work pretty good. Only a couple of complaints. 1. Only battery operated. Being able to plug into an outlet would be wonderful. 2. It dispenses food in between set feeding times. When having prescription food this is not cost effective for me. All in all though this product does work, just wish it worked better.

Not Reliable

I was given this feeder as a gift. Its not terribly hard to set up, but it took several days to figure out the right amounts to drop. I have used a measuring cup to measure how much the machine is dropping. It does not drop the same amount consistently. It also misses meals randomly. Which is scary if you plan to use this when you travel. It is also not tamper proof. My cat barely bumps the side and it drops food. This machine is also very hard to clean.

Petmate Cat Feeder NOT good

I ordered this feeder so that we could be comfortable leaving our cat for a long weekend. Once we received the feeder, I programmed it and adjusted it to try to get the required 1/4 cup to dispense, which was NOT easy nor consistent. Unfortunately, our cat QUICKLY figured out that he could dispense more feed at will by easily and gently putting his paw into the opening. THIS FEEDER IS NOT RELIABLE. Very disappointed!

Not reliable

Worked great at the beginning but then, became a free feeding station. The amount delivered was way off the amount of cup programmed. Or sometimes, it delivered few pellets. Not reliable. Sorry.
