This is my third PetSafe Drinkwell fountain and I like it a lot...my cats are somewhat skeptical, however. The first one we had was terrific! Ceramic and super quiet, large bowl, easy to clean, BUT the pump was glued in and when it failed, the fountain was done. The second one was the stainless steel one. The constant noise drove me crazy and stainless stains, although the cats liked it. Now, this one Pros: VERY quiet and good looking. Cons: Small bowl area and a little more fussy to clean. If your pets like to drink from the "trickle-down" part they will ike this. Bowl drinkers might not. The silicone cap for the stem is ridiculous and there is no way it will stay in place. I just cap it off with wrapped foil or plastic wrap. But that's a problem the manufacturers need to solve. Recommend, but with these caveats.
I cannot keep this fountain clean no matter what I try. The instructions say to rinse the filter before first use and I did, and saw a bunch of black charcoal dust come out. I rinsed until the water ran clear, then set up the fountain. Within 2 days, the water was cloudy and smelly and there was black charcoal dust all over the bottom. I dumped the water and cleaned it, rinsed the filter again for a few minutes, and refilled the fountain. Same thing happened within a couple of days. It does not stay clean for more than 2-3 days and my cat won't use it. I keep a regular bowl of water next to the fountain for him to make sure he has water until he decides to try the fountain, and the bowl stays cleaner than this fountain. I already disposed of the box so I can't return it, which is a shame because I feel like I wasted my money with this fountain.
This fountain looks great and is very quiet, but it gets gross very quickly. I tried with and without the charcoal filter as some of the reviews mentioned, but either way there was always a lot of build up around the filter. The water gets cloudy very fast, and so you have to change it often enough that you end up wasting a huge amount of water (at least I did since my one cat can only drink so much water so fast).
The fountain is beautiful, but my cat didn't want to touch it, at least at first. I decided to keep it by my bed as a humidifier in the dry winter months. After at least a month, kitty decided it was really nice, and now she drinks from it a lot.
We bought ours 13 months ago (in Dec 2021) and yesterday the motor stopped working. Expected it to last a lot longer than one year. Also, build up inside happens quickly and more frequently that you might expect. So I’d look to change the filters a bit more often then the instructions provided say.
One of my cats is a little too curious and likes to tip over normal water bowls/fountains, so we were looking for a heavier one that he can’t spill. We found this one, and all three of our kitties absolutely love it! It’s super quiet and great design - the cats love to drink from both the top where the water comes out as well as the bowl. And the bowl is nice and heavy so none of them can tip it over. The only complaint I have with it is it is a bit of a pain to clean and the filters aren’t the greatest. Still love the fountain though and will probably get a second at some point.
I read other reviews where the charcoal filter makes the water slimy. So I didn’t use it. Cleaned everything with dishwashing liquid and water. The cat refused to drink from it. I changed the water every day. Then I washed it again. There was grit covering every area inside of the fountain. The ceramic parts had to be scrubbed. After washing it, I decided I didn’t want that to happen again. So I tossed it. Didn’t want any other animal to use it. Didn’t even want to return it. Maybe it was the filter that goes around the pump? So back to the pricey handmade pet fountain.
This water fountain is extremely quiet, I can't hear it at all. It's also quality ceramic construction. This fountain isn't cheap, but it was worth the cost in my opinion.
After the old water fountain broke I had to look for something else since they don't make that one anymore. I love the water fountain. It is very quiet and that is what I was looking for! The other one was quiet but this is quieter than the old one. It did take at least half a day for my cat to adjust but now she drinks out of it no problem. I you have any hesitations - don't. Buy It!
I have 2 cats one drinks right from the top and the other hasn't gotten the hang of it and drinks from the bowl. One thing! they were never great water drinkers, but having the fountain they do drink more. I keep up with changing the filter each month which keeps the fountain clean and running with no issues. the seacape is very quiet which is good for the skidish cat. I had also gotten the Pagoda but that never worked out because too much water noise. One down fall on my fountain (and I don't know if they're all like this. The glazing on the bowl is not fired properly. It makes it hard to clean and has a rough surface.
