Precautions
HAZARDS TO HUMANS AND ANIMALS: May not stop all animals. SprayShield is highly effective in low to medium level aggression. However, some dogs are so strongly motivated that no known spray deterrent is effective; physical restraint is the only way to stop an attack by these animals.
- Shake can for 1-2 seconds.
- Slide trigger right to activate.
- Aim spray nozzle at the animal's nose.
- Spray stream has a maximum reach of 10 feet. A full can will spray continuously for up to 12 seconds.
To lock trigger, lift red tab and slide to the left until locked. *To be most effective, the spray stream should be aimed at or near the nose of an attacking animal. Try to avoid aiming for an animal’s eyes. Before using SprayShield on an animal, the user should test the spray to become familiar with the range of spray. Citronella is the active ingredient and presents a strong odor, effectively distracting an attacking dog. The propellant in the product is flammable, and if heated, the can may explode.
Effectiveness: Independent sampling has shown that SprayShield is effective in controlling dogs exhibiting low to medium aggression. It should be noted, however, that while the product has matched the effectiveness of 10% pepper spray on dogs, it may not stop trained attack animals or animals with a strong motivation to attack.
Proper use: The first defense is observation and awareness of the area. Potentially dangerous situations should be avoided. However, if faced with an attack situation, SprayShield can be sprayed at or near the nose of the animal to distract it and allow valuable seconds for retreat to a safe place. A second or continuous spray may be used for animals who persist.
If the aggressive dog’s owner becomes hostile: Remain calm. The owner most often assumes that you have sprayed their pet with pepper spray. Explain that the solution in SprayShield is not pepper spray and does not cause pain to the animal. The spray contains a natural essence, citronella oil, which serves merely to distract the dog. Let the owner smell the scent and spray a small amount on your hand to demonstrate that it does not burn like pepper spray.
If bitten by a dog: Immediately call Animal Control to report the bite so that the dog can be checked for proper rabies vaccination. If possible, keep the dog in visual contact until an officer arrives. This will help insure that the correct animal is identified. If unable to do this, attempt to have someone else do this for you. If the bite breaks the skin, seek medical attention immediately.
Can SprayShield be used as a training aid?
Yes. Some people use it to interrupt unwanted behavior in dogs. Once the unwanted behavior is interrupted, the dog’s attention can then be redirected.
Can SprayShield be used to defend against an attack by another human?
No. SprayShield interrupts a dog’s behavior and distracts the animal because of its strong spray stream and unique odor. It does not cause pain or injury and would not affect human behavior.
Can the spray be harmful to my pet or family?
No. The spray solution has been found to be extremely safe and poses no danger to animals or humans. The active ingredient is a natural essential oil that has been used in human, animal, and environmental applications for thousands of years. Although it can cause discomfort in certain individuals with allergies to citronella, it is considered safe for the vast majority of people and animals.
Can the spray harm the dog’s eyes?
This would be highly unlikely. The citronella solution is buffered to minimize any discomfort should it get into the eyes. However, as with any aerosol product, the spray should not be aimed directly into the eyes.
How many sprays are in a can?
A full can will spray up to a 10-foot stream continuously for up to 12 seconds. The actual number of sprays will be a direct result of how the user chooses to meter those sprays.
Is SprayShield as effective as pepper spray at stopping attacking dogs?
Yes. When sampled at the Canine Aggression Research Center, it was found to be as effective on moderately aggressive dogs as other personal defense products including 10% pepper spray solution.
What are the primary advantages of using SprayShield?
It will effectively deter low to moderately agitated dogs without increasing aggression. Other personal defense products such as pepper spray and mace have been proven to increase aggressive behavior in dogs. A second notable advantage over other spray deterrent products is the absence of harmful blow-back that can incapacitate the user and make the user even more vulnerable.
Who should use SprayShield?
SprayShield is designed to be used by kennel employees, animal control officers, utility workers, meter readers, delivery personnel, joggers, bicyclists, outdoor enthusiasts, sportsmen, or anyone who may potentially come in contact with a moderately aggressive dog.
Will SprayShield deter any attacking dog?
SprayShield has shown to be extremely effective in deterring low to medium level aggression. In many cases dogs that are strongly motivated to attack cannot be stopped without restraint. The best protection is to be aware of the presence of and avoid an encounter with a potentially dangerous dog.

Love this stuff
I work at a doggy daycare where we have to have these on us at all times and I really appreciate them. To be honest whenever a fight happens my first instinct is to just grab them and pull them apart so personally, I don’t use the citronella much. I do know a dog trainer we work with who uses it ALL THE TIME though and he loves it. It does deter fights in most cases unless they’re really in a severe fight where they cannot be broken up. I would recommend using the spray first bc it’s an easy and quick way to get them to stop, and reaching in can get you very hurt. I always just end up sticking my hands in and grabbing dogs but I will tell everyone else to use the spray!!! Our trainer also uses it on the more reactive dogs bc he says it has a calming effect on them. It’s completely pet and human safe, i’ve seen this man spray himself in the face with citronella before to show people it doesn’t harm the dogs. He also likes to rub it on himself sometimes if the dogs tend to jump or nip. I would say to definitely have one of these no matter if you’re a dog owner or you go to the park or not. It can be extremely helpful.
Must Have!
Neighbors let their BIG dogs run loose, they charge at my little Jack Russells and scare them to bits. Just a little tap towards them with this repellent and no more problem. I don’t want to hurt the big guys but don’t want them to get a chance to get my Babies. I gave one of these to my elderly neighbor so she wouldn’t be afraid to check her mailbox because these same BIG dogs tried attacking her. And yes we have all called animal control, but that’s another story. We are safe because of these little canisters of citronella! Thank you.
Feeling secure to carry it with me in our neighborhood
It sprays on a longer distance than a regular pepper spray and is under higher pressure which is good. I had to use a regular pepper spray once so I can compare. The regular pepper spray was not a good experience at all. I had to come really close to reach the dogs with the stream and then My dog was all sticky and brown where she was sprayed and was miserable until I washed her with shampoo at home. Fortunately I didn’t have to use this spray in a real situation yet.But I know that it would be working much more efficiently and be safer for the dogs than a pepper spray. Definitely worth having it on me all the time for being prepared, for peace in mind. In our neighborhood there are lots of free roaming dogs.
Pet Spray Shield
I found this to be a complete waste of money. The spray lasted maybe 3 seconds and did not deter dogs.
Did not work for me
Might work in some cases, pit bill grapped my dog through opening in fence, sprayed whole can in his eyes, was hoping he would flench and release my dog, not the case took owner some time to get him to let go.
Not Happy with product
Had to use for a moment and it lasted for about 10 seconds before it stopped.
Get this for your dogs!!!!!!
I just came back from a walk and my puppy and my mom were about to be attacked from a bully pit! We were walking and out of nowhere, that dog came running FAST. His chest was puffed up and he just had the look of wanting to attack something. He came running to us and my mom picked up my 6-month lab puppy and hid behind a car. I took care of the bully pit! I was about 6 feet away from the dog and rapidly switched the lock and sprayed him until he moved. Straight in the eyes! The dog went around the car to look at my mom and puppy and I was ready to spray him again until he ran to another street. As he left, he shook his head. I never heard of this deterrent until my dog trainer told me to get it. I don't believe what I just did! It for sure was a fight or flight moment and the dog mom definitely came out. I am stocking up on bottles since the bottle I have is now half empty.
Did not work to stop pit mix
Obviously it depends on the dog, but this had no effect on my pit mix who was fighting with my other dog.
Good for deterring approaching dogs
Ever since my dog and I were attacked by an unleashed dog I’ve been carrying this. I have used it to deter curious off leash dogs and it has been effective. I’m not sure that it would prevent a determined dog from approaching, but it’s better than nothing, and it’s nice that it is a mild deterrent for dogs that are generally good but that I don’t want approaching me and my dog.
Don't go out without it
After our dog was attacked by an unleashed dog, we started carrying this spray every time we left the house for dog walks. It's not pepper spray - it can't hurt an animal - it's just citronella, but they HATE it! I have had to use it when rough play or minor aggression accelerated to a fight, just spray in their direction and boom, they walk away. Great product!
