Description

SprayShield uses an innovative formula to interrupt dog attacks by surprising and distracting the dog with a powerful citronella scent, giving you time to escape. When sampled on trained attack dogs, SprayShield was found to be an equally effective alternative to 10% pepper spray, with none of the harmful side effects.

SprayShield is the perfect safety tool to carry with you to prevent dog attacks, whether you’re walking your dog, visiting the shelter or vet, or just jogging around the neighborhood.

Key Benefits
  • Powerful citronella spray deters low to moderately agitated dogs without increasing aggression
  • Safer alternative to pepper spray for preventing dog attacks without harmful blow-back that can incapacitate the user
  • Spray solution has been found to be extremely safe and poses no danger to animals or humans, spray interrupts a dog’s behavior and distracts the animal because of its strong spray stream and unique odor
  • Compact can with handy belt/pocket clip
  • Full can will spray up to a 10-foot stream continuously for up to 12 seconds
Precautions

HAZARDS TO HUMANS AND ANIMALS: May not stop all animals. SprayShield is highly effective in low to medium level aggression. However, some dogs are so strongly motivated that no known spray deterrent is effective; physical restraint is the only way to stop an attack by these animals.

Instructions
  • Shake can for 1-2 seconds.
  • Slide trigger right to activate.
  • Aim spray nozzle at the animal's nose.
  • Spray stream has a maximum reach of 10 feet. A full can will spray continuously for up to 12 seconds.
  • To lock trigger, lift red tab and slide to the left until locked. *To be most effective, the spray stream should be aimed at or near the nose of an attacking animal. Try to avoid aiming for an animal’s eyes. Before using SprayShield on an animal, the user should test the spray to become familiar with the range of spray. Citronella is the active ingredient and presents a strong odor, effectively distracting an attacking dog. The propellant in the product is flammable, and if heated, the can may explode.
  • Effectiveness: Independent sampling has shown that SprayShield is effective in controlling dogs exhibiting low to medium aggression. It should be noted, however, that while the product has matched the effectiveness of 10% pepper spray on dogs, it may not stop trained attack animals or animals with a strong motivation to attack.

  • Proper use: The first defense is observation and awareness of the area. Potentially dangerous situations should be avoided. However, if faced with an attack situation, SprayShield can be sprayed at or near the nose of the animal to distract it and allow valuable seconds for retreat to a safe place. A second or continuous spray may be used for animals who persist.

  • If the aggressive dog’s owner becomes hostile: Remain calm. The owner most often assumes that you have sprayed their pet with pepper spray. Explain that the solution in SprayShield is not pepper spray and does not cause pain to the animal. The spray contains a natural essence, citronella oil, which serves merely to distract the dog. Let the owner smell the scent and spray a small amount on your hand to demonstrate that it does not burn like pepper spray.

  • If bitten by a dog: Immediately call Animal Control to report the bite so that the dog can be checked for proper rabies vaccination. If possible, keep the dog in visual contact until an officer arrives. This will help insure that the correct animal is identified. If unable to do this, attempt to have someone else do this for you. If the bite breaks the skin, seek medical attention immediately.

FAQ

Can SprayShield be used as a training aid?

Yes. Some people use it to interrupt unwanted behavior in dogs. Once the unwanted behavior is interrupted, the dog’s attention can then be redirected.

Can SprayShield be used to defend against an attack by another human?

No. SprayShield interrupts a dog’s behavior and distracts the animal because of its strong spray stream and unique odor. It does not cause pain or injury and would not affect human behavior.

Can the spray be harmful to my pet or family?

No. The spray solution has been found to be extremely safe and poses no danger to animals or humans. The active ingredient is a natural essential oil that has been used in human, animal, and environmental applications for thousands of years. Although it can cause discomfort in certain individuals with allergies to citronella, it is considered safe for the vast majority of people and animals.

Can the spray harm the dog’s eyes?

This would be highly unlikely. The citronella solution is buffered to minimize any discomfort should it get into the eyes. However, as with any aerosol product, the spray should not be aimed directly into the eyes.

How many sprays are in a can?

A full can will spray up to a 10-foot stream continuously for up to 12 seconds. The actual number of sprays will be a direct result of how the user chooses to meter those sprays.

Is SprayShield as effective as pepper spray at stopping attacking dogs?

Yes. When sampled at the Canine Aggression Research Center, it was found to be as effective on moderately aggressive dogs as other personal defense products including 10% pepper spray solution.

What are the primary advantages of using SprayShield?

It will effectively deter low to moderately agitated dogs without increasing aggression. Other personal defense products such as pepper spray and mace have been proven to increase aggressive behavior in dogs. A second notable advantage over other spray deterrent products is the absence of harmful blow-back that can incapacitate the user and make the user even more vulnerable.

Who should use SprayShield?

SprayShield is designed to be used by kennel employees, animal control officers, utility workers, meter readers, delivery personnel, joggers, bicyclists, outdoor enthusiasts, sportsmen, or anyone who may potentially come in contact with a moderately aggressive dog.

Will SprayShield deter any attacking dog?

SprayShield has shown to be extremely effective in deterring low to medium level aggression. In many cases dogs that are strongly motivated to attack cannot be stopped without restraint. The best protection is to be aware of the presence of and avoid an encounter with a potentially dangerous dog.

  • Work with aggressive dogs daily

    By on

I work at a no kill animal shelter and have a hand full of dogs that would be considered aggressive or problem kids. My boss just purchased some of this for the workers since I have been attacked and my bite stick isn't always effective. I just used it for the first time today and it didn't do a thing. Had the dog been aggressing towards me instead of having his focus on my leash I would have been in trouble. A bucket of water finally released his hold on my leash (he has very inappropriate play responses) and a mostly empty can of this stuff later told me I need to buy mace if I actually want something that will be a deterrent/protection. We didn't buy this from here mind, and had it worked I work at a no kill animal shelter and have a hand full of dogs that would be considered aggressive or problem kids. While walking my senior, small, blind dog, I've carried PetSafe Animal Deterrent Spray for ages and while previously never having to use it on a dog, have pulled it out numerous times in a very visible and, I hope, menacing way with off-leash dogs approaching. 100% of the time, the irresponsible, entitled, jerk dog owner has quickly sprung to action, (thinking I had pepper spray)has taken control of the pet and detoured out of my way! Recently I purchased a new one, only because I worried that over time the strength of the spray may have diminished (in case I had to use it). Only one day after tossing out the old one and replacing it with the new, my dog and I were approached by two loose dogs on a quiet street without a human in sight. They were on us in a heartbeat and I had just enough time to pull out the spray. As I aimed, I noticed that there was a lot of excitement and sniffing but no growling. So, in a split second decision, I released the spray, not in their faces but just in front of their noses (it's wonderfully easy to aim). I was amazed! Both dogs seemed to shoot up in the air, like cartoon dogs, and simultaneously dash away from us as fast as their 8 legs could carry them! One whiff, and they said "we're outa here!" I had never been sure that the spray would work but saw to my delight that it is truly effective. The beauty is that even if used full-on in the face and eyes if necessary, the animal would not be permanently harmed (out of control dogs are just being dogs--it's the owners who need to suffer serious consequences). With this spray, now I have more confidence that I can protect my dog and myself from the off-leash agressors as well as possibly our neighborhood coyotes! And, don't forget--just the sight of it snaps negligent dog owners into action! Great product. … more

  • Did not stop attack!

    By on

I saw this on the website and bought it on a whim to bring up my order total to get the free shipping...I figured it would be a good idea to have when I walk my dogs just in case we came across an aggressive dog. Unfortunately, I had to put the product to the test when a neighbors dog broke its collar and attacked my elderly dog. I followed the directions and sprayed the dog in the nose, I emptied the entire can and it did nothing to stop the dog it didn't even seem to notice. I will be upgrading to real deal pepper spray. This stuff might work to scare off a dog who is "all bark" but I wouldn't trust it to stop an attack!

  • Great Product

    By on

This convenient citronella spray is wonderful. I click it on my belt whenever I take my dogs for a walk in our neighborhood. I came upon a big black dog one time, and I sprayed this in the air over his head and he tucked his tail and ran! And he has never bothered me again on our walks. Apparently, dogs hate the scent of citronella. This sprays 10 feet. They say, this doesn't work on all dogs, but it certainly is better than not having anything to protect my dogs. It worked for me. And at such a small price. Thank you Chewy for stocking this product!

  • Excellent Behavior Modification Tool

I have a number of these always at hand for our 2 year old Rottweiler mix. Remy no longer barks at dogs on our walks or passing by our home. Two stern "No's" and quick squirt to the head if a third bark occurs....1% citronella, 99% compressed air...It has accomplished all we had hoped for in our wonderful dog.

  • Great deterrent

I'm a dog walker and carry this product with me as a non-harmful way to keep stray dogs away from the dogs I'm walking. I frequently walk reactive dogs and if a stray starts to come near us I shoot a little in front of them and they have always turned around. It helps prevent the reactive dogs I'm walking from being triggered and/or attacking another dog.

  • It works, trust me!

    By on Top 500 Contributor

My job, a dog daycare, asks us to have these on us at all times in case of a fight. It works just about every time, and I know it’ll work exceptionally in case a rogue dog ever comes at us on a walk! Best part is even if it gets in a dog’s eyes, they’re fine. It just stops the attack.
