FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy is licensed in its resident state of Kentucky and each state into which we ship compounded medications. Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

We source all our compounding ingredients from FDA registered manufacturers and distributors.

Do prescription medications require authorization from my veterinarian?

Yes. Chewy Pharmacy can only dispense medication with a valid, patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Will you contact my veterinarian directly to approve my prescription medication?

Yes. If you have selected for us to contact your veterinarian, we will contact them to obtain a valid, patient-specific prescription.

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Prescriptions are typically processed by the pharmacy within 24-48 hours after receipt of a valid prescription form the veterinarian.

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

Yes. If you have valid refills on file with Chewy Pharmacy, you can set up an Autoship for medications.

    Soft chew medication

By HavMama on Aug 21, 2021

Thank goodness for these soft chews. Trying to get 5 pills a day into my small dog is no picnic. Fortunately, he thinks these are a treat and I have no issue getting him to take them. I will say the first month that we bought these they were not what I would consider a "soft chew" but since then they have been soft and like I said, my sweet boy thinks he getting a treat after he has his medicine.

    “soft” chew?

By rebekah on Jun 14, 2021

These are not soft at all! They’re huge too. You would think a 1mg chew meant for toy breeds would be small. My little man has plenty of teeth left, has always ate hard food, and eats everything in sight. He has so much trouble eating these. It takes him a while and he wants to run off with it to eat in peace, since he thinks its a large treat. Not cool when I need to make sure he takes his medicine, and make sure my other animals don’t. Sometimes he doesn’t even want to eat it, which is shocking. He eats the chewable tablets with no issue. He eats everything with no issue. Its the height of summer in the deep south, so its not the temperature making these so hard. 3 stars because I’m happy These are not soft at all! They’re huge too. My picky dog loves these

By RebeccaS on Jun 13, 2021

Like many people who have dogs on VetMedin, I was looking for the compounded pimobendan alternatives. These chews are excellent! My Bichon/Shih Tzu mix is very picky and he really thinks these are a treat. I’m so glad I can get these from Chewy on autoship! They ship and arrived really fast also!

    Pro's & Con's

By Gayle on Jan 20, 2021

Cheapest, yes, but price has steadily increased more than $30 in three months. But ... product is always available, customer service is good, shipping is free and prompt, so ... oh, and our pup eats them like they were real chicken!

    perfect choice

By Lulu on Nov 24, 2020

This is the cheapest I have seen available. So far, it hasn't been out of stock like the brand name. Even though you search for the brand name it does not show in the results. Remember to put the generic name (pimobendan) to see all your options. It is easy to give. My dog loves it. I am glad that this was an option. It has helped her spend more time with us. We are grateful.
