FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

1.tFind the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

2.tAt Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

3.tSelect whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

4.tSelect a saved shipping address or add a new address.

5.tSelect or enter your preferred payment method.

6.tReview and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy is licensed in its resident state of Kentucky and each state into which we ship compounded medications. Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

We source all our compounding ingredients from FDA registered manufacturers and distributors.

Do prescription medications require authorization from my veterinarian?

Yes. Chewy Pharmacy can only dispense medication with a valid, patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Will you contact my veterinarian directly to approve my prescription medication?

Yes. If you have selected for us to contact your veterinarian, we will contact them to obtain a valid, patient-specific prescription.

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Prescriptions are typically processed by the pharmacy within 24-48 hours after receipt of a valid prescription form the veterinarian.

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

Yes. If you have valid refills on file with Chewy Pharmacy, you can set up an Autoship for medications.

    Lifesaving!

By iowadogmom on May 17, 2021

My little poodle Jeffy has to have this medication twice daily and he doesn’t like to take pills - he never has ! I was crushing the med and I was worried he wasn’t getting it all . I ordered this and Jeffy takes it easily and it smells good, doesn’t seem to taste bad to him and it works so good. As far as spilling the bottle now has a tight stopper in it and I never have had any issue with spilling ! It works so awesome and I am so happy I am getting it thru Chewy now !

    Overpriced and difficult to operated

By Lacey on May 23, 2021

Realizing there is a present shortage of Pimobendan, I bought this small amount at $63 for the time being. However, later, I found the exact same product at Heartland Vet for $16.50. The small syringe included does not reach to the bottom of the bottle, even if you tilt the bottle on its side. I poured the remaining amount in a small glass to try to recover the last and still there is loss of medicine in the transfer. Heartland's bottle has a better method to extract the medicine right to the last.

90ml bottle lasts for 3 months!

    By Grannie23 on Mar 28, 2021

I read all the reviews about leaky bottles and took a chance anyway. I was lucky...my bottle was fine. Previously I had used the chewable tablets (50 per bottle) which only lasted about a month and a half and cost about the same as this compounded liquid! I did the math, and the 90ml bottle I ordered lasted for 3 months...twice as long for about the same price! It's a no-brainer if cost is one of your primary issues. The trade-off is that the liquid is less convenient to use and the numbers on the syringe they give you fade off quickly. My solution was to take a kitchen knife and score the tube at the 1/2ml and 1ml markings that I needed. Problem solved. Also keep in mind that the syringe I read all the reviews about leaky bottles and took a chance anyway. I was lucky...my bottle was fine. Better than pill form.

By Hewhospitsout on May 5, 2021

My dog spit out the pill form. This is better whereas he at least gets medicine in twice a day. I just wish 30ml bottle was bigger and lasted more than reordering every 15 days. I wish there were 180ml bottle for 90 days.

    What a lifesaver

By Grammy on May 24, 2021

This works so well --- my poodle's response is fantastic. He is eating and acting his old self again. Thanks so much for this compounded medication.

    Unhappy with compound

By Darla on Feb 12, 2021

Due to the shortage of Vetmedin pills, I bought the chicken flavored compound for my Beagle. Unfortunately, this did not appear to work as well, as his symptoms of CHF appeared to worsen somewhat. I am an RN so I know he was getting the exact dosage (the compound gets settlement in the bottom of the bottle and must be shaken thoroughly or the dosage may be off). Luckily I had enough pills to alternate between liquid and pill or his symptoms may have worsened considerably. My vet was finally able to get some pills and I am no longer using the compound. I hate to say this is the first time I have been disappointed with a Chewy product. Chewy has always been my go-to for pet needs. Leaks solved

By Mike on May 1, 2021

Received intact despite the box being badly crushed. They have solved the leakage issue by inserting a plastic stopper under the lid. Difficult to remove: I had to use a corkscrew on it.

    A bit challenging

By KatS on Mar 1, 2021

The medication appears to work well. As others have mentioned, the bottle leaks terribly and so he seems like we might be wasting a very expensive medication. Also as others mentioned, it wipes off the number on the syringe and so I am eyeballing it now. I do also have concerns regarding the medication settling and whether I am mixing it well enough. My dog is very funny about taking pills or treats so this is my only choice.

    Take what you can get

By becky on Apr 12, 2021

I've had a hard time getting the vetmedin for my dog. So i began to purchase this. However this is only a 1 week supply and is 20 dollars less than a month supply of vetmedin. My bottle was also leaky.

    Leaky bottle

By Chewyuser on Feb 12, 2021

This is a good alternative to Vetmedin which goes out of stock, however, the bottle leaks and the liquid takes the numbers off the syringe. Chewy doesn't sell a replacement syringe. So not even halfway through the bottle and the syringe no longer gives an accurate reading of the dose.
