Description

Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication prescribed to treat inflammation and pain due to arthritis. Piroxicam may also be prescribed to work hand-in-hand with other drugs for the treatment of bladder cancers. Veterinarians may use this in the treatment of companion animals. Customers may receive this drug under the name Feldene.

Uses

Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is commonly used for managing pain and inflammation in dogs and cats. The action mechanism of Piroxicam is to hinder the secretion of prostaglandins, thereby bringing relief from fever, pain and inflammation. It could also be combined with other drugs in the treatment of transitional cell carcinoma- a type of bladder cancer in dogs.

Possible Side Effects

Possible adverse reactions include stomach and intestinal ulcers and bleeding, dark or tarry stools, vomiting, loss of appetite and peritonitis. The potential for ulcers increases when Piroxicam is used in combination with corticosteroids, aspirin or phenylbutazone. Piroxicam can decrease kidney function and cause a sudden severe injury to the kidneys. Blood clotting may be impaired because of Piroxicam's effect on the blood platelets. As with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, this drug can cause liver injury with an elevation of liver enzymes in blood tests.

Drug & Food Interactions

Piroxicam may interact with medications. Consult your vet to determine if other drugs could interact with Piroxicam. Such drugs include diuretics or ACE-inhibitors (enalapril, benazepril, quinapril).

Precautions

Piroxicam should not be used in pets with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug, or with a history of bleeding, inflammation or perforation of the stomach or intestinal lining. It should also be avoided in pets with high blood pressure.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.

NOTE: For Generic Medications, picture displayed may not depict actual product. Generic medications may vary from one order to the next by size, color and shape depending on manufacturer. Customers may receive the same drug under the name Feldene.

    This helped my dog

    By on

My dog is put to sleep or jays 2020, diagnosed with a bladder tumor officially December 2019. I made a error in the shipment date and it was very clear to days without her medicine perhaps can increased her pain and complications immediately, Letter tumors must be treated with practicum and hey some dogs go into remission to do it. Towards the end you will need added pain medications but don’t ever skip the peroxicam.
