Questions & Answers

17 Customer Questions

I just got notification that Primal for CATS, rabbit, was in. I tried to order and it said Temporarily out of stock! What’s the deal??

what is the percentage of rabbit?
Answer by ChewySep 30, 2022
This recipe contains 92% rabbit, organs and bone. To help protect the confidentiality of Primal formulas and prevent competitor replication, the specific ratios are proprietary and unavailable for distribution.

What is the texture of this food? Hard and crunchy or soft and chewy?
Answer by ChewyAug 26, 2018
The dehydrated nugget has a crunchy texture and the rehydrated nugget is soft, similar to wet food.

Once rehydrated how long can it stay out?
Answer by ChewyFeb 18, 2021
Primal Freeze-dried formulas do not warrant refrigeration in their dry state, served right from the bag. This is due to the shelf-stability of freeze-dried food. However, when serving rehydrated freeze-dried food for your pet to eat, we recommend no more than a two-hour service window for the food to be out of refrigeration.

Something changed

I have fed my cat Primal Freeze dried both rabbit and chicken and salmon. This last order the product is different. Both of these bags caused my cat to drool a LOT. I googled Primal for issues and sure enough the formula has changed. From reviews I have read here and elsewhere, many are now seeing issues with the new formula. I won't buy this again.

This Product is Great!

I have a kitty with food allergies, who must eat hydrolized protein food. I had a really hard time finding treats after the pandemic, so my vet suggested rabbit. I tried this product and she loves it! Dry or rehydrated. She has had no tummy reaction to it, so it's now part of her daily diet. Love it! Can be used as treats or as a main source of food.

Formula Change for Rabbit

My cat had loved the Rabbit formula, which has 92% Rabbit, Organs, and bones as shown on the product. But the one I recently received has only 88% Rabbit as shown on the product. I realized this because my cat stop eating it. Seems they added eggs to replace some Rabbit organs. I hope they would keep the original formula.

Recent FDA Warning & Severe Stomach Issue Caused

I want to preface this review by mentioning that not all of my products were purchased on Chewy. Chewy itself is amazing and I only have issues with the products from Primal. I recently purchased several bags of Primal Pet Food for my cat, and unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. I recently purchased several bags of Primal Pet Food, including their rabbit flavor, for my cat. While the first bag of rabbit flavor seemed to be of good quality, the second bag was noticeably darker in color. I decided to feed it to her anyways, unfortunately, after consuming the food from the second bag, my cat started experiencing severe digestive issues, including liquid diarrhea and projectile vomiting. Upon researching further, I discovered that the FDA had issued a warning letter to Primal Pet Foods in February of 2023. The FDA cited several violations, including failure to implement adequate measures to control for the presence of pathogens and failure to manufacture and handle the products under sanitary conditions. The FDA also identified numerous violations of the law. Learning about the FDA's warning letter was alarming and reinforced my concerns about the safety and quality of Primal Pet Food products. Based on my experience and the FDA's warning letter, I cannot recommend Primal Pet Food to other pet owners.

CAUSED CONSTIPATION IN BOTH MY CATS

I really wanted to love this after searching for good cat food, and I spent 6 months transitioning my kitten and 4-year-old cat to this diet. They both had been showing some signs of constipation as we increased the number of raw nuggets, but when we finally got them on 6 raw nuggets (each) a day my 4-year-old cat became so constipated we needed to take him for an emergency enema! I felt awful he was in so much pain. The vet said his poop was just literally bones and hair...like nothing to keep it passing through his system. Two days later my kitten had poop stuck to her butt and I examined it, sure enough, it was all tiny bones and hair! I'm not sure what the exact issue is, but I can say for certain it's the food that's the problem. My one cat has had many instances of diarrhea but NEVER constipation. It's only fair to point out that this did seem to help my cat's coat be shinier, and they never had hairballs or throw-up while eating it. But clearly it's not worth that if it's going to send my cats to the emergency vet for constipation. On to the next food brand...

an excellent choice for discerning cat caretakers

After stumbling across eye-opening information about the impacts of synthetically-produced vitamins and minerals on human health (as opposed to those from food sources), as well as the invisible epidemic of poor mineral health in general, I naturally started wondering how this affects domestic pets. I started paying attention more to pet food ingredients and was genuinely horrified by what I saw. Most pet foods, even the high-quality expensive ones, are loaded with synthetic vitamins and minerals. Here's a small explanation to make sense of my previous statement concerning these ingredients: "Synthetics are isolated versions of natural real nutrients and are inferior and impotent to the body. Synthetics lack transporters and co-factors which occur naturally with real nutrition. When the body can't use these synthetics they end up being stored or excreted by the body and at a cost as the body needs to use resources to provide transporters and co-factors that aren't part of the synthetic. Synthetic vitamins steal trace minerals and take them from the body's reserves which can lead to dangerous mineral deficiencies. Synthetics can "trick" the body if it's suffering from a deficiency. The body can detrimentally take up the synthetics making it think it has the needed nutrient and not take up the healthier real nutrient from real food when it becomes available." This is very much in line with what I learned about the dangers of synthetic nutrients for humans as well. It makes sense that it would also apply to pets. All of this to say, I'm so grateful for Primal to supply a food without all of the synthetics. This brand will be in heavy rotation from now on! I hope more pet owners become aware of this little-known problem so they can start making the best choices possible for their beloved pets (and themselves).

Rabbit nuggets are inconsistent

My cat loves this food. I alternate with rabbit and venison and he’s been on this diet for about 2 years. I can’t speak to an overall formula change like the other reviewers because 9/10 bags of the rabbit food are consistent and my cat licks the bowl clean. However, every once in a while, we get a rabbit bag with darker nuggets that my cat refuses to eat. We have to throw the bag away, $45 in the garbage. I’ve reached out to the company about this more than once and their response was super unhelpful and did not acknowledge any kind of variation in their formula from time to time. It’s so frustrating. For the price of this food, they need to figure out a way to keep it consistent.

Rabbit nuggets

We are using these for a cat that has allergies and he loves them, but the cost is so very expensive.

good ingredients, but expensive

Bought the 5.5 oz bag and there were 20 full nuggets in the bag plus one piece of a nugget. I feed this alongside wet canned food, so I feed my cat 1 nugget per day. He can only eat rabbit meat, so I’m happy about this. Only downside is that it’s quite expensive. He is 5 lbs and if he was only eating this, according to his caloric needs, he would need 5 nuggets a day. That means it would cost around 5$ per day for him, which is why I use this just as a topping.
