  • Because of the importance of moisture in a raw diet, Primal recommends rehydrating this product with water or Primal Raw Goat Milk for optimum nutrition absorption. To rehydrate add 1 tablespoon of water or raw goat milk for every nugget, or 1/4 cup for 4 nuggets. For best rehydrating results, break nuggets into small pieces and mix thoroughly to force moisture into product.

  • Feed adult cats the equivalent of 2-3% of their body weight in rehydrated food per day.

Transition Instructions

Transition slowly. Begin by mixing 1/4 parts freeze-dried to 3/4 parts current diet. Gradually increase amount of freeze-dried daily.

  • Adult Cats: Divide total daily feeding portion into 2 meals.

  • Kittens and pregnant or lactating females: Divide total daily feeding portion into 3-4 meals.

    New Formula?

    By on

My cats used to love the venison; however, the last 3 months the cubes are greasy and flakey and none of the cats will eat it anymore. I have returned all the bags of this and will not be purchasing in the future.

Five cats who normally love venison say no thanks.

    By on Top 500 Contributor

I have ten cats, five of whom love several other brands of venison. I thought I would give this a try. The cubes are as the other reviewers said, hard as rocks. I did manage to get them chunked up and put warm water on to rehydrate. One cat tried to eat some after five minutes, but all she did was move the pieces off of the plate. They have all smelled the food. It is now 40 minutes later, and I would say it is finally rehydrated. None of the cats have eaten it, let alone chowed down like they usually do when given venison. I'm glad I took another reviewers advise and tried a small bag first. I'm very disappointed. I should have bought one of the other brands of venison that I know they like. Tried a small bag because it looked good

    By on

Normally my older cat loves venison but for some reason even he wouldn't eat this. I tried it wet and dry and he just went for his dry food instead. I have four indoor and one outdoor cat yet none of them would touch this for some reason even though they all like venison. I can't say why because every check I made online for quality shows this as the best freeze dried on the market but they don't like it.Would I recommend it?... Yes but try a small bag first to make sure your cat will like it.

Made without antibiotic, hormone and steroid.

    By on

Our kitten Panda is allergic to other proteins (Chicken, Turkey) and both the Venison and Rabbit Nuggets by Primal are high quality alternative proteins to regular ones. These are made without antibiotic, hormone and steroid. High in protein and low in carbs this provides a meal that's better suited to a cat's dietary needs. Other reviewers mentioned that the Venison Nuggets are very hard and a bit difficult to crumble. That's true for a human, Kitten Panda however had no problems to crumble and chew it in 5 minutes. Feeding Panda a raw meat diet is important for us and feeding him Primal Venison (And rabbit) Nuggets are the best way of getting as close to a diet that he evolved to eat. I got a mixed bag.

    By on

My cat gives this 5 stars, but I took 1 star off because of the difficulty to rehydrate. There were some softer nuggets in the bag that were easier to rehydrate than others. They weren't as soft as the pork, but I was still able to crush them up with my hands. I wish the entire bag was this consistency.

    Good idea food

    By on

This new kind of pet food might be a little work to crumble for your pet, but if they like it like mine does, it's worth it. My finicky cat appears very satisfied, finally.

    Excellent meat

    By on

I've been feeding Primal's freeze dried venison, reconstituted (always -- freeze dried food *must* be re-hydrated, cats don't eat anything dry in nature) for over a year and my cats never get tired of it. The bone percentage is one of the more reasonable -- 7%, a Ca:P of 1:1, closer to a cat's natural diet vs the bone percentages that normally average 10% and up. The venison nuggets are hard as a rock, as others have mentioned, a common complaint of the FD venison. The hardness of the nuggets has nothing to do with the food being old, etc. --- venison is a VERY LEAN meat, very little fat and that is why the nuggets are hard. I put the nuggets in a glass mixing jar and pound / mash with a pestle, making it as chunky or as much of a pate as both cats like, then I add water. Yes, it's a little more work than just crumbling the nuggets but far worth it. Please DO NOT follow Primal's guideline of adding a paltry "1 tablespoon of water per nugget", hardly adequate for an animal who derives her moisture from food and rarely from the water bowl. I add at least 4-5 tablespoons per nugget. I wish Primal would change their guidelines on their packaging - poor oversight, not sure who came up with that mere amount of water. :/ My only issue with the FD venison is that the meat is so lean one of my cats tends to get constipated if he eats too much of Primal's venison so I have started using the duck, a fattier meat. Highly recommend the FD venison, which is pasture fed btw, not corn or soy fed like most commercial poultry in the US. … more

Excellent quality and cat keeps it down!

    By on Top 500 Contributor

I am so happy with this food. It's healthy, for one thing. And, one of my cats with a vomiting issue keeps this down. She really likes both this and the pork flavor. Just make sure to break the pieces apart and throw out any solid bones.

My cat's love them Dehydrated NOT hydrated!

    By on

If I re-hydrate any brand of freeze dried as directed, they take one sniff then look at me like I've grown 2 heads. I have to use a sharp knife and just cut a block into slivers (or in the case of Stella n Chewy's brand - which is softer - just quarters), and they gobble it all up! I don't care - whatever works. I've thrown too much cat food away to worry 'how' to feed it - just 'will' they eat it. (Just make sure they have access to plenty of fresh clean water daily, they need it with dry food.
