Description

Proin Extended-Release is prescribed by your veterinarian to help control urinary incontinence in dogs due to urethral sphincter hypotonus, a weakening of the muscle in the urethra. It works by helping to tighten the bladder and urethral muscles to help prevent urine leaking and accidents. With all the same efficacy as Proin Chewable Tablets, these patented extended-release tablets are designed for once-a-day dosing and deliver a controlled release mechanism for steady absorption.

Uses

For the control of urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincter hypotonus in dogs.

Possible Side Effects

The following signs have been reported more often with a dose higher than the recommended dosage: agitation, arrhythmia, bradycardia, erythema, fever, hypersalivation, hypertension, lethargy, mydriasis, panting, piloerection, tachycardia, tremor, and urinary retention.

Drug & Food Interactions

No serious food and drug interactions have been reported.

Precautions

Proin ER may mask signs of incontinence due to urinary tract infection. Proin ER is not effective in dogs with incontinence due to neurologic disease or malformations. Proin ER may cause hypertension; therefore, use with caution in dogs with pre-existing heart disease, hypertension, liver disease, kidney insufficiency, diabetes, glaucoma, and conditions with a predilection for hypertension. Use with caution in dogs receiving sympathomimetic drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors as increased toxicity may result. Use with caution in dogs administered halogenated gaseous anesthetics as this may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias. A laboratory study on human blood revealed that phenylpropanolamine (PPA) used in conjunction with aspirin may potentiate decreased platelet aggregation. Proin ER may cause increased thirst; therefore, provide dogs with ample fresh water. The safe use of Proin ER has not been evaluated in dogs that are intended for breeding, or that are pregnant or lactating.

This item cannot be shipped to Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Oregon, and West Virginia.

These Proin Extended-Release Tablets have the same efficacy as Proin Chewable Tablets.

Instructions
Recommended Dosage

The recommended dosage is 2 to 4 mg/kg (0.9 to 1.8 mg/lb) of body weight once daily. Do not split or crush tablets. Dogs weighing less than 10 pounds cannot be safely dosed because tablet administration would result in a dose over 4 mg/kg. Dogs may transition from Proin Chewable Tablets to Proin ER without a break in administration. However, do not alternate Proin ER with Proin Chewable Tablets because the effectiveness and safety of interchangeable use have not been evaluated.

Storage Instructions

Store at controlled room temperature 68-77°F, excursions permitted between 59-104°F.

FAQ

Why Proin ER?

  • Convenient - Given with food, a single dose per day simplifies treatment.

  • Innovative - Patented release technology provides controlled release that ensures steady absorption.

  • Easy to Prescribe - Four dosing strengths based on body weight to provide simplicity.

What are the common clinical signs of urinary incontinence in dogs?

  • Dripping or leaking urine

  • Excessive licking of the genital area

  • Red and irritated skin around the genital area

  • Needing to go more frequently than normal

  • Wetting the bed or sleeping area

  • Urinating inappropriately in the house

Fortunately, while frustrating at first, canine urinary incontinence may be controlled with Proin ER, a safe and effective FDA-approved once-a-day tablet that works by increasing urethral sphincter tone to help prevent urinary accidents.

Proin is great; shipping, not so much

I chose Chewy because of the two-day shipping and because my partner and I being busy people, I didn't realize our girl had run out of her pills, and one of our vehicles was in the shop. When I ordered I forgot that our vet has my partner's name listed instead of mine, so it didn't go through. That's my bad. But when I got the email about it I called immediately, in the middle of the night, bless their hearts. The person I spoke to entered my partner's name in such a way that it looked like HE was the VET and our vet had no idea what was going on I couldn't help. I had to call and be on the phone with Chewy for another 15 minutes or so. We finally got the pills today... 9 days after I ordered I chose Chewy because of the two-day shipping and because my partner and I being busy people, I didn't realize our girl had run out of her pills, and one of our vehicles was in the shop. The experience was pretty bad. Everyone I spoke with was very nice, though. And the proin is pretty much a miracle. … more

    Finally!!!!

I used to get these specially compounded for my dog. The extended release Proin is the only medication that helps her urinary incontinence. So happy to be able to order them here for a fraction of the price I used to pay.

    Works like a charm

With this order I switched my second dog to the ER tabs (she was initially on the 50 mg tab twice daily) and my first dog was initially prescribed the ER tab once daily. The meds itself work great, shipping was on time, the called they MD themselves. Only issue I have is that for both dogs the meds came in 6 small bottles, 30 tabs each. Kind of pain to store 6 bottles on medication so I had to save one larger bottle of my second dog's old medication and dump all 6 bottles into that.

I was dubious, but this really does what my Vet promised

My 13 year old Border Terrier started wetting his bed and wanting to go out to pee multiple times each night. My Vet suggested Proin Extended Release Tablets. The first few weeks I did not notice any improvement, but now Percy is sleeping through the night and no more wet bed. I tried cutting back, but the problem came back. A real game changer for us!

    Didn't work!

    By on

My dog has been using the 50mg Proin for a number of years. They ran out and will no longer be carrying at my Vet, so we tried the extended-release. After two weeks my dog was leaving puddles again!! Very frustrating, because they keep running out of the 50mg..

    It really works!

This is a very effective drug. My older female standard poodle's problem with urinary incontinence is resolved, without side effects. Chewy has best price for this drug. Plus fast shipping.

    Works but....

My dog spits them out. Apparently doesn't taste good to her like the bigger wafers did. On the other hand, I like it better bkz only have to give them to her once a day. Seems I'd tend to forget the evening one or it was way off schedule.

My Golden Retriever puppy is on this medication after surgery to correct her ectopic ureter. She is not incontinent anymore and tolerates the medication very well.
