We recommend that you keep your dog in ideal body condition and not allow your dog to become overweight. The exact amount of food your dog requires will need to be adjusted according to age, activity and environment. A good place to start is with these guidelines for an average, active, Adult dog fed once daily.
Provide adequate fresh water in a clean container daily.
Although you'll be anxious to see the difference Pro Plan can make in your dog, please allow 7 - 10 days to ease the transition from your dog’s current food. Each day, simply feed a little less of the previous food and a little more Pro Plan until you're feeding Pro Plan exclusively. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets.
How do you ensure the quality of your dog and cat food?
We maintain a strict code of standards for buying, storing and processing ingredients used in our pet foods. These standards are among the strictest in the pet food industry. You can feed our food with confidence, knowing the Purina commitment to quality provides the best possible nutrition for your pet.
Do you test your dog and cat food for aflatoxins?
Yes. We have a meticulous quality assurance program for every incoming load of dog and cat food ingredients. We have ingredient specialists at each of our North American Purina pet food manufacturing facilities who are trained to sample and analyze incoming grain. Our grain testing program helps ensure only high-quality grains are used in our products. This testing is part of our comprehensive food safety and HACCP programs We maintain a strict code of standards for buying, storing and processing ingredients used in Purina pet foods, including grains. Every supplier of ingredients for Purina pet food must meet stringent standards for ingredient specification, product safety, sanitation and good manufacturing practices. Our quality assurance standards are among the strictest in the pet food industry.
Where is your dog and cat food manufactured?
99% of Purina pet food products sold in the U.S. are manufactured in our own facilities in the U.S.
Why does your dog and cat food contain colors?
Although dogs and cats are unable to distinguish color, we know that most pet owners consider the product’s appearance when purchasing food for their pet. Artificial coloring is added to maintain a more desirable and consistent appearance. All colorings used in our pet foods are approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Where are your ingredients sourced from? Are they sourced from China?
The vast majority of ingredients used in Purina brand products are sourced from the United States. As with other food companies, we do source a limited amount of ingredients from China. These ingredients, which are primarily essential nutrients, such as taurine and B vitamins, are not commonly available in the USA or other countries in the quantities we need.
Why use corn in dog and cat food? Is corn a filler?
“Filler” may be defined as feed ingredients for pet food with little or no nutritional value. Every ingredient in our formulas has a valuable function and plays a part in providing an excellent source of nutrition to your pet. When properly cooked, corn provides a highly digestible source of carbohydrate, essential fatty acids and protein, and thus, is not considered filler. Corn also has among the highest level of natural antioxidants of any grains. Purina only uses the same grades of corn traditionally used in human food products.
Does your dog and cat food contain GMO grains?
It is likely that our pet food contains GMO grains because genetically modified grain and grain products constitute a significant portion of the supply of grain available throughout the U.S. for both human and pet foods. U.S. grain handling and distribution practices result in a co-mingling of supply, which results in a loss of identity preservation. The FDA recognizes the safety and equivalence of products derived from U.S.-approved varieties of genetically modified grain, so there is no reason to exclude it from the general supply. In addition, the FDA does not require products containing GMO grains to bear additional labeling.
Why do you use by-products in dog and cat food?
By-products are defined as the co-product of a primary product and are usually portions of the animal not always consumed by people in the U.S. By-products are an excellent source of protein and other nutrients. By-products in pet foods that meet Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines come from clean animal parts other than meat, such as the liver, kidney and other organs. Purina purchases all by-products from USDA-inspected plants. They must meet stringent criteria for nutrient content, production and quality assurance.
What is animal digest?
Animal digest is often considered a substandard pet food ingredient. In some cases, this is because the word "digest" is mistakenly thought to describe the contents of the digestive tract. The word "digest" in "animal digest" refers to the digestive process used in production, not the ingredients. The process starts with animal protein such as muscle and soft tissue supplied by USDA-inspected facilities. These ingredients are processed in order to break them down, similar to the process of digestion in the body. The resulting digest is a liquid, but can also be made into a paste or powder.Animal digest is a high-quality ingredient that provides an excellent source of protein and enhances the palatability of Dog & Cat foods.
Why don’t you utilize a natural source of Vitamin K instead of menadione?
The basic story about the dangers of Menadione has emerged at various times during the past decades as something of an urban legend in the pet food industry and are not research-based. In fact, numerous research studies and nutritional textbooks have identified Menadione as a safe and effective means of providing the important nutrient Vitamin K to Dogs & Cats. Menadione has been commonly used in pet foods for approximately 25 years with no documented negative health effects. Menadione is a stable source of the essential nutrient vitamin K. Vitamin K provides the following nutritional benefits: it is required for the synthesis of a number of body proteins, most notably the proteins responsible for normal blood clotting.
How do I know how to feed my dog or cat? How do I know if my dog/cat is overweight?
Feeding your pet is one of the most important ways you can care for him. Once you have chosen the right food for your pet, you can develop a plan for portioning and scheduling. For more information, check your product package for specific feeding amounts. All of our Dog & Cat foods come with feeding instructions to help you properly feed your pet depending on his size, but certain types of pets may require specialized foods to help them maintain an ideal body condition.
What is a complete and balanced nutrition in dog or cat food?
Pet food makes up the entirety of a pet’s diet, so it needs to deliver all of the nutrients they need. That’s why pet foods so often use the phrase “complete and balanced.” Every pet food needs to meet federal (FDA) and state regulatory standards before it gets near your dog’s or cat’s bowl.

Problems solved
By Griz on Jan 18, 2021
Our dog was suffering from chronic diarrhea and dry itchy skin, leading to lots of chewing and scooting. All veterinary testing showed he was in great health, despite these conditions. We had tried several holistic dog foods thinking that would cure him of his problems. It did not, it only made us feel like we were feeding him what we would want to eat if we were dogs. He could care less and the products did nothing to resolve his problems. Almost immediately after starting him on the lamb and oatmeal pro plan, his poop got solid and the diarrhea has been a thing of the past. We also mix in a packet of pro plan fortiflora probiotics periodically. His skin is also much better, not cured but a Our dog was suffering from chronic diarrhea and dry itchy skin, leading to lots of chewing and scooting. Purina Pro Plan Lamb & Oatmeal
By Sage on Jan 20, 2021
I'm always pleased with how fast my orders are shipped. Sage has been dealing with yeast and food allergies. I'm a big fan of Purina Dog Food so I wrote the company for help and they responded along with a nice sized coupon for their Focus Lamb & Oatmeal. At first Sage started to respond really well, she has been on it about 2 weeks now. Sadly Sage is back sliding. I still have another bag to give her which will put her on it for a month and I'll update on her progress then. Little bit about Sage - She is 2yrs old, a registered service dog, she is a mix of six breeds - Mastif, Boarder Collie, German Shepherd, Pitbull, Boxer, and Siberian Husky. New Purina Formulas
By Penny on Jan 22, 2021
My pup loved her Purina Pro Plan puppy food and when it was time to switch to big girl food, I went straight to a variety of the adult options from Pro Plan....this being the last one we tried. I thought she became a picky eater since she poked around all of the formulas but she loved the raw freeze dried toppers I gave her so I knew she had an appetite. We finally tried something other than Pro Plan and she is eating again. After the mom guilt subsided this bag went into the trash. There seems to be something up with all of the new Pro Plan formulas, I won’t ever go back.

Better than I expected
By Jess on Jan 16, 2021
I have a little Maltipoo mix and she has very sensitive skin. She’s had allergy shots from our vet because her paws get inflamed and she gets a lot of ear infections. Decided to switch her to this food, and after a few weeks, we noticed her itching has subsided. She’s also pretty regular on it as well. She doesn’t have issues eating it either, but she does get a bit of broccoli, green beans and pumpkin mixed in. We also wanted to switch her from a boutique brand since there last some controversy with them. I also know I wanted grain inclusive. Maybe it’s too early to review, but hopefully her intense itching does not come back.

My Dog Loves It!
By Lisa9iner on Jan 9, 2021
As my dog has gotten elderly I've noticed that his stomach is more sensitive to what he eats. So when I tried this Sensitive Coat and Stomach dog food by Purina for free thanks to a sampling program, I was hopeful that this would be a food he likes. He certainly does. He has his excitement back at mealtime. This is also a food I can feel good about feeding him because it is grain free with no corn and by-product. It also has lamb as the number one ingredient. Having real meat as the number one ingredient is a good indication that a dog food is healthy. I've noticed my dog isn't as gassy and uncomfortable after switching his food. Highly recommend
By PJP915 on Jan 17, 2021
Our 3 yr old, 73 lb American Bulldog is prone to skin irritations & has a sensitive stomach. We had been feeding her a more expensive “blue” brand dog food that seemed to reduce skin irritation & stomach issues. After recommendation from our veterinarian, we slowly switched our dog to Purina Pro Plan Adult Sensitive Skin & Stomach Formula Dry Dog food. After several months of use, we’ve seen NO issues with skin irritation or stomach issues. This product provides the proper nutrients for a happy & healthy dog at an affordable price!

Vet Recommended
By Marge on Jan 3, 2021
My veterinarian recommended Purina Pro Plan for 2 reasons for my German Shepherd. First, she was having digestive problems and the second reason was that she was on a “grain free” dry dog food. Veterinarians are finding that dogs on grain free diets are trending more likely to develop heart disease. We’ve completed the 10 day change in food, and she is doing so much better.

Purina Pro Plan Adult Sensitive Skin and stomach Lamb and Oatmeal
By Ladysmom on Dec 11, 2020
dog went from healthy to super itchy, biting legs, licking feet all the time. Took a while for me to figure out what had caused this. The food, is the only possible answer. Have never encountered this with any other dog food that I have fed her before, and we have tried quite a few. The only positive thing that I can say is that she completely stop shedding, where as with all other brands she shed terribly. Will never buy this again or this brand, since I am now afraid that they could all make her react the same way. It's been awful, she went from energetic, to lethargic(sp), sleeps all the time. Hope the new food I ordered from a different company brings her back to her normal self.

better than most
By 4dogsmom on Dec 5, 2020
My big girl, a 4 year old Bernese Mountain Dog, has frequent skin flair-ups due to her allergies and some of the nastiest gas a dog has ever had! We tried several different foods for sensitive dogs and have found that this is better than most. We tried the salmon variety and the gas was worse and I'm not sure she loved the flavor as she became a very picky eater, so we switched to the Lamb & Oatmeal. The gas is gone (our noses are thankful!) and her skin issues are better. She still has skin flair-ups but they are less frequent and more manageable than before. It isn't a miracle food but it has made a noticeable difference that some of the other brands did not provide

Dog won’t eat jt
By Zeke on Dec 28, 2020
I saw other reviews that dogs won’t eat, but my 12yr old GSD isn’t usually super picky about his food and loves lamb so I wanted to try it to help with his stomach and skin issues. He REFUSES to eat it! I tried adding other foods to the bowl but he picks around it and would prefer to starve himself for 2 days before he’ll eat it. Trying to find another option...
