We recommend that you keep your dog in ideal body condition and not allow your dog to become overweight. The exact amount of food your dog requires will need to be adjusted according to age, activity and environment. But a good place to start is with these guidelines for an average, active, adult dog fed once daily. Provide adequate fresh water in a clean container daily.
Please allow 7-10 days to ease the transition from your dog's current food. Each day, simply feed a little less of the previous food and a little more Pro Plan until you're feeding Pro Plan exclusively. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets.

This USED TO BE a great choice for sensitive dogs. They added beef fat to the formula which is a very common allergen for dogs and did not send out any type of notice with this change. My dog started losing his fur, having soft, wet stools, and just constantly smelled bad. Once I realized they changed the formula I immediately switched to Wholesomes. Wholesomes is minimal ingredient and cheaper. Within a few days all those problems subsided and he has more energy. Its also higher calorie so they don’t meed as much. Definitely do NOT use Purino if your dog has skin/stomach problems!
My dog (a wheaten terrier) suffered from itchy, inflamed, bumpy skin for about 2 years. Initially I switched his food from Nutro lamb & rice to Acana red meat formula, thinking it would help to eliminate grains. I also switched to bathing him with sulfate free shampoo. It seemed to help some for a short time but his skin allergies soon returned. Even when he was less itchy his nose was often warm and often dripping. He also started to develop recurring bouts of upset stomach where he’d throw up his food for no apparent reason. After a lot of research I decided to try the Purina Pro Plan sensitive stomach in salmon & rice flavor. I’m happy to report that after 6+ months on Purina our boy seems to be cured! His skin is no longer inflamed and bumpy, he’s not constantly scratching and gnawing, his nose is cold and wet but not drippy, and he loves the taste of the food. I couldn’t be happier with this food, it really seems like it does what it promises. Recommended!
My dog has been on this food for over a year. We got a new bag in late October but had no idea it was bad. Our dog started getting sick in November. I didn't think it was the food, it's the same one. Looking back he has been getting sick every time I switch him back to this food from the bland diet. We have been to the vet several times for bloody stools and inflammation since opening the bag. One day he outright refused to eat it. We tried a new food and the NEXT DAY we have our spunky energetic healthy dog again.
Transitioned my older dog to this from chicken based Science Diet (allergies). At first it seemed to go well, now he really doesn't want anything to do with it. I did read a few reviews where it seems the formula (taste) changed so maybe this is part of that, but he will only reluctantly eat it after a while. I guess when he gets hungrier. The food has a distinct (strong?) fish smell which I think is to be expected from a fish oil based food. It has only been a couple three weeks, so we will see.
Our vet recommended this food for my Great Dane/pit bull mix when he started getting a rash on his back. He’s a white dog, and they’re prone to skin problems. We’ve previously had problems with his skin during the summer if our grass gets long, we have to make sure his flea and tick never lapses, and he has a tendency to get real yeasty feet from chewing and licking. He recently developed a rash all over his back, and after trying medicated shampoos and everything we could think of, our vet recommended we switch his food. Within a week, the rash was clearing up and he’d stopped itching.
It took a few attempts for my dog to accept this food, which is odd, because he would eat anything. The smell is probably less appetizing than others, so it may take longer for your pups to get adjusted. I love that this is one of the few high-quality moderately expensive WSAVA food with no chicken or poultry, which was the main factor in the decision of switching our 7 yo dog to this one. Unfortunately, his stool is still very soft after over a month of switching to this. I tried to add pumpkin but it made things worse. All considered we'll stick to this, but I wish they added something to help with stool texture.
In the past 2 years, I have spent $1000's of dollars and tremendous hours of research trying every organic and natural option for my beloved Goldens and their sensitive tummies and allergies. I remain baffled why some foods seem to work for a few months and then they don't. Our breeder and 3 different vets have always stood by Purina Pro Plan. While I still don't love the long list of ingredients, my fur babies are high energy and active pups with shiny coats and happy bellies. We are month 4, adding a pump of the Zesty Salmon oil, and all is well.
I thought maybe a change from her Science diet food to something different. Bad mistake. She likes the Purina but her bowel movements are more frequent and soft almost runny. She doesn't seem to be getting the right nutrients. She's hungry all the time. Didn't have this trouble with the Science diet. The reason I changed her food in the 1st place is the weight gain. Any suggestions would be helpful. We have spent so much money on allergy conditions from her foods and except for weight gain Science, diet lamb is all we can find. Thank you for any information that might help.
A breeder, exhibitor, working dog participant for almost 25 years. This variety of Pro plan is good for our dogs. Primary ingredient is fish high in Omega. No corn or wheat. Has oatmeal. All good stuff. And, Chewy has good pricing and delivery.
Based on other reviews and speaking to friends, it seems like maybe the formula changed. However this was our first bag and ever since we transitioned to this food completely, my pup has had nonstop stomach issues. She has had severe diarrhea that only goes away when we stop the food but comes back immediately when I even try to reintroduce the food into her diet. I have had friends complain of the same issue so I would recommend staying away from this particular formula.
