Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Works for us
By JJJJ on Feb 3, 2021
My 21 year old cat has just shown signs of elevated kidney enzymes so she was given a sample of the NF canned food. She was happy to eat it so I bought the dry to try. She likes it! I like that the pieces are small and it's much more affordable than canned kidney diets. I will continue to use this brand to help with her kidneys issues.

Kidney help
By Mailmam on Feb 9, 2021
This is the second brand of dry cat food for my 18 yr old cat to help with her kidney problems. At least she seem to like this. Last one I had to doctor up just to get her to eat. She’s very picky so this is much better. She likes tuna & this is only one made with tuna.

Kidney Care That Works
By BoadiceasMama on Jan 5, 2021
Our 15 yo tortie is diabetic and has early onset renal insufficiency, we’ve tried Hill’s kidney care which unfortunately was not tolerated. Our vet suggested the Purina Pro NF dry food and our fluffy has tolerated it very well, she likes the flavor and has no tummy issues!

My cat seems to like it.
By Julie on Jan 22, 2021
Needed a kidney function dry food for my cat Gracie. She turned her nose up at the sample of another brand her veterinarian gave me to try. But she's eating this one which is a good thing!

It's prescription so...
By J123 on Dec 7, 2020
This is a prescription food. A vet prescribed this. Kind of hard for me to evaluate the health effects. Flavor-wise, it's moderately good. The pieces are small and disc-shaped. Main disadvantage is that this is high in calories.

Great Choice for Kidney Diet
By Charla on Nov 22, 2020
My cat had been on Science Diet KD. She didn't like it and did everything she could to try to steal one of the other cats' food. Her doctor switched her to Purina NF and now she doesn't leave her bowl until she's done and sometimes the other cats try to steal hers!

Purina Prescription Kidney Diet
By ALM1106 on Sep 4, 2020
My cats would not eat the two previous prescription diet dry food which my Veterinary prescribed, and I was very worried. Then I did a search on Chewy and found the Purina Pro Plan. My cats always liked Purina food - I used to give them a little as a treat, so I tried it after the Vet gave Chewy the okay for the prescription. I put some in a treat bowl and they came right over and started eating it. It is now in their regular food bowl and they eat it daily as the major part of their diet. Thank goodness for Chewy since now I feel relieved that my cats are getting some necessary prescription food that can save their lives!
