Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Good option for cats who like dry food

By Avila on Apr 13, 2021

Though most of my cat Omar’s meals were wet food, I left this out for him to eat during the day as needed. This was the most appetizing of the dry options that we tried. Unfortunately, it is rather expensive for the amount you get, which is why I’m rating 4 stars instead of 5. Omar passed away recently and I wish I hadn’t ordered extra bags, as now I have two whole bags I paid for that he won’t need. I will be donating them, but just mentioning as a warning to not stock up.

my cats would not touch it

By kidney on Apr 1, 2021

My two girls are the furthest from picky eaters. I’ve never had to slowly transition etc. The hard food and soft food they literally smell it and back away. I really was hoping they would adjust and the. Never happened, they just chose not to eat, so now I’m trying science diet early kidney care, fingers cross.

Great for cats with Kidney disease!

By Kidneyfood on Mar 15, 2021

My 14 year old cat was recently diagnosed with kidney disease and put on a special diet. We tried several expensive prescription foods and she would not eat any of them. A friend recommended Purina and she loves it! There is enough to worry about with an elderly sick cat and I was thrilled to take the right food off the list.

    Works for us

By JJJJ on Feb 3, 2021

My 21 year old cat has just shown signs of elevated kidney enzymes so she was given a sample of the NF canned food. She was happy to eat it so I bought the dry to try. She likes it! I like that the pieces are small and it's much more affordable than canned kidney diets. I will continue to use this brand to help with her kidneys issues.

    Kidney help

By Mailmam on Feb 9, 2021

This is the second brand of dry cat food for my 18 yr old cat to help with her kidney problems. At least she seem to like this. Last one I had to doctor up just to get her to eat. She’s very picky so this is much better. She likes tuna & this is only one made with tuna.

    Kidney Care That Works

By BoadiceasMama on Jan 5, 2021

Our 15 yo tortie is diabetic and has early onset renal insufficiency, we’ve tried Hill’s kidney care which unfortunately was not tolerated. Our vet suggested the Purina Pro NF dry food and our fluffy has tolerated it very well, she likes the flavor and has no tummy issues!

Needed a kidney function dry food for my cat Gracie. She turned her nose up at the sample of another brand her veterinarian gave me to try. But she's eating this one which is a good thing!
