  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Vet Diet team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my prescription?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your prescription, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax your prescription to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a prescription written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid prescriptions from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a prescription?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper prescription, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with your full name or the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps: 1. Create your pet ’s profile on Chewy.com. 2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on refills, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any prescription information has changed. 3. If you have a prescription handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do prescriptions expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your prescription will expire and how many refills we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up auto refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your food for as long as your prescription allows. If you run out of refills, or your prescription expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new approval. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

    new version not as appealing

    By on

When I started giving this to Chloe I mixed it with the old version of their Kidney Function food to get her used to the new. She ate around the new, preferring the old. If a piece of the new falls out of her bowl she leaves it there, but eats the older food piece! I have not tried giving her just the new food so will have to see if she leaves it in the bowl. She has not had any more kidney incidents so it seems like the new food is doing its job as the old one did.

    Not her favorite

I use a time release feeder for the dry food. Regular food (before the diagnosis) would be eaten as soon as it was available. Not so this formula. She only eats it when she is really hungry.

    They love it.

I have several older cats some with early kidney disease. I've tried other food the Vet recommended but none of them liked it. I tried the Purina Pro Plan for early care and all of my cats love it.

    Vet recommended, cats like it.

    By on Top 500 Contributor

I mix a few dry foods together so the cats have variety in their food. To keep kidney function optimal, I am trying to keep the phosphorous levels low and this food fits that profile. I have incorporated this food into the mix and everyone likes it.

    I think it's working

The vet ordered this for my cat who is in early stages of kidney failure. She is able to hold the food down and has stopped loosing weight. However, she really doesn't like it which makes it hard for me to get her to eat.

    Great For Older Kitty

    By on

Our 11 year old Ragdoll has one failed kidney so the vet suggested this food. Our girl loves it and is doing well on it. I was happy to find it at Chewy as we are from Canada and winter in the California. I sent them our vet's prescription and the food was delivered immediately.

    She loves it!

    By on

Her appetite is not good everyday, so I have to keep a variety of foods on hand, sometimes something different will get her eating again. Gave her this for the first time this morning, she ate every bit of it, yay. Course, she may decide eventually she doesn't like it anymore, lol, it's been a challenge to keep her eating.

Good option for cats with kidney conditions

    By on

We use this as the dry alternative during the day for my cats. Otherwise, they eat wet kidney prescription diet. They are super picky and will eat this dry food option.

    Cat likes this

    By on

Our elderly cat has slightly elevated kidney values and it was recommended that she start a kidney-friendly diet. Of all the prescription diets, this is the only one she will regularly eat (wet and dry formulas). We do have to supplement with some lower phosphorus non-prescription diets to encourage her to eat this food sometimes, since eating any food is crucial.
