  2. At checkout, you’ll be asked for required information. Enter your pet’s name and type your vet’s name and telephone number.
  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Vet Diet team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my prescription?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your prescription, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax your prescription to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a prescription written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid prescriptions from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a prescription?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper prescription, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with your full name or the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps: 1. Create your pet ’s profile on Chewy.com. 2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on refills, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any prescription information has changed. 3. If you have a prescription handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do prescriptions expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your prescription will expire and how many refills we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up auto refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your food for as long as your prescription allows. If you run out of refills, or your prescription expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new approval. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the Vet Diet team at Chewy?

    OK at first

    By on

We had tried a couple of cans from our Vet, and he happily ate them, so I ordered from Chewy, as this is where we’ve been getting our pet food. A couple of weeks into using the NF, and he started to refuse to eat it. I tried mixing in some chicken broth and even some of his old food, and he still wanted nothing to do with it. Now we have a couple of unopened cases that we will be donating. It’s too bad because our vet really felt that this was the best option for his early stage kidney disease.

    She likes it.

My 14 year old cat has been put on this by my vet. Only trouble is now she wants to eat six times a day and is gaining weight which is not good for her because she is obese to begin with. I must cut back on the number of times a day she eats and not allow her to eat more than probably about 1/2 to 3/4 can per day.

16 year old cat will not eat this food

    By on

I offered this food to my old cat, but she did not eat it. My vet said that although the low protein diets are helpful for cats with kidney disease, it is more important that they eat something. I guess I will donate this box to the vet.

    Austin loves it!

    By on

I am so thankful I found this food! The cat food my cat was eating before had changed quite a bit and he just wouldn't eat it. From the moment I opened the can, I got his attention! He loves it and is gaining weight so I am thrilled.

    Healthy but not terribly palatable

    By on

It is unfortunate that this prescription food comes only in one flavor and only in the large size cans. The only way I can get my kidney compromised cat to eat it is if I doctor it with broth from a Non Rx food. I also have to freeze half the can as this size if at least 4 days worth

    My cat won't eat this

    By on

Wasn't sure how to rate this...I am sure it is a good product (it was one of two diets recommended by my vet for early signs of kidney disease in an older cat), but my cat does not like the food AT ALL.. I suspect that the consistency is part of the issue...she prefers her wet food to have more goo in it. This food is more like potted sandwich meat. So, I will try the Royal Canin Senior Consult wet food. She already LOVES the RC Senior Consult DRY food! The bright note on this is that Chewy.com credited me for the food that she wouldn't eat, and suggested that I take the remaining cans to a cat shelter to donate. :) Nice touch , Chewy!! Thanks!

    Finally! Something he'll eat!

    By on

My 9 year old cat has developed early renal failure (kidney disease). I've been struggling to find a prescription diet that he will eat. He refused to eat more than a bite of Hills or Royal Canin . We finally found this one, and he seems to be doing very well with this.

    My cats like it

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

My cats like it, but not as much as Hills k/d food. This brand is pate and Hills is chunky pieces and they like that form of food better.

    Initially, he gobbled it up

    By on

Our male kitty has begun his senior years into kidney disease. His numbers aren’t crazy but enough to start him on Purina NF canned cat food. He can be a picky eater but then he surprises me and he will gobble up his food. I was ecstatic to see him eat with enthusiasm this food but as the weeks progress he is shying away from it. He will eat it in time but I now have more waste when he doesn’t. Now I will mix it with just a little store canned food and he will eat. Oh well. Whatever it takes. I am thankful that there is a trusted product out there for him. I will get his labs repeated in a few more weeks. Respectfully, Jackie b

    Cat didn’t like it

Unfortunately our cat did not like the wet food and refuses to eat it. I wish an option to purchase fewer cans was available.
