    Replacing dental chews

By Quincy on Apr 18, 2021

My dogs like these. I believe they digest easily enough. My afghan hound ended up with a blockage...where the stomach empties into the intestine. Very expensive surgery. The vet didn't know what the item was. Could have been anything tossed over the fence or a chew of some kind I gave him. It was like My dogs like these. I believe they digest easily enough. My afghan hound ended up with a blockage...where the stomach empties into the intestine. Very expensive surgery. The vet didn't know what the item was. Could have been anything tossed over the fence or a chew of some kind I gave him. It was like a hard rubber. The digestive juices had worked and worked on it. I am grateful the dog let me know he couldn't go to the bathroom and I was able to save his life. Since I want to be very careful, I will no longer feed the good hard chews they loved, no bones either to be safe. The afghan dog is a thief, so he could have swiped about anything. They were getting a variety of dental chews and chews of all kinds, it could have been a nylon bone thing. Either way, the vet didn't know, so I just took it upon myself to change the treats they loved. Now, I only give them Oravet Dental Chews (too expensive to give 3 dogs one a day, so once a week) bc they will digest even if a larger piece has been swallowed. And these soft soup bones. While my dog was in the hospital, they had one who had swallowed a ball of yarn and it was threading its way through the intestine...another with a ball stuck...and one with a greenie piece. (I had never purchased that brand, but my dogs had a good variety of others). There was another dog in there that nearly died from something he ate and his surgery was removing parts of the intestine where it had been ripped trying to pass the item. I can't recall what it was now. All dogs lived and are doing fine..I asked. The really sad part is, we love our pets and the vets have these kind of surgeries in a fairly small town, 3 times a week. That is horrifying. I like Chewy bc it lists the ingredients of everything. I was busy trying to avoid the treats and food that has cancer causing ingredients and may have caused his surgery anyway. It would have been good to know what was stuck to be sure, but biscuits and cookies and people jerky, summer sausage and the like are now their treats. … more

    Tasty, but okay

    By Odie123 on May 8, 2021

My buddy Odin likes this as a quick treat. Tasty and digestible. But not a chew treat. Odin is a pit/lab/hound puppy at 50 pounds and a medium chewer, but the largest size last him less than 1 minute! Might save the last few for my old pug so she can have a yummy chew.
