FAQ

I keep reading that cats are carnivores and don't need grains and many carbs. What is the percentage of carbohydrates in your canned cat foods?

Our Redbarn Canned Cat foods are all grain-free. They all contain approximately 4% carbohydrates.

I keep seeing "Ash" listed on my pet food's ingredient list. What is it and why is it in my pets' food? What is the ash content of your cat food?

Our Redbarn Canned Cat Foods contain approximately 1.9% ash (on a wet basis).Ash, as listed on pet food labels, is pretty much what it sounds like: the inorganic material that remains after organic material is burned up. Don’t be alarmed, it is a measurement of non-organic mineral content, including calcium, phosphorus, zinc, iron and other essential minerals. The FDA mandated a food composition test in which producers determine how much fat, carbohydrate and protein are in certain foods by burning each organic element out of it at different temperatures. All that is left after a test like this is ash. While it seems strange, ash is essentially a measurement of minerals that have to be in foods, to some extent, since your pet needs calcium, phosphorus, sodium and several trace minerals. In general, dry pet food is always going to have ash content (look for something under 8%) while wet food will occasionally have it too, in smaller amounts (typically 2% or less).

    Top notch, limited ingredients

Very happy with this food because it doesn't have animal byproducts or tons of different animal sources like so many pet foods. Doesn't have chicken, turkey or cow parts. Just ocean fish. Thumbs up

I have a senior cat I adopted. She was overweight when I got her. She is lazy and Hammersmith lb. I bought this brand for her weight. Surprised she likes it. Other health weight brands she was not happy with.

    High hopes, big let down

I have been looking to find a new wet food that was easy to obtain, as my cat's current brand is only available at a single store. I decided to try the ocean fish pate for my picky kitty, who is a princess and refuses to eat dry kibble. I checked the ingredients before purchasing to ensure they were similar to what she was eating before, but she wouldn't touch this food! The consistency was off (like a paste, not like other pates we've had in the past), it did not have a pleasant smell and was an odd color. She despised it so much that even after refusing to eat breakfast and lunch, she would't have it for dinner. 6 out of 6 cats won't eat

I spooned this pate from the can adding nothing. I was surprised this grain free fish did not stink. After cats would not eat I added some pure well water [not chlorinated], cats still would not eat. These are 4 barn cats and 2 house cats. The barn cats eat just about everything, not picky and spoiled like house cats. Ingredients include: 1- Ocean Fish, 2 fish broth, 3 Peas, 4 Natural Flavors?, 5 Alfalfa Meal [ground grass] , Cranberries, Agar-Agar [A Vegetarian Gelatin Substitute Produced From Seaweed] Parsley, Blueberries And the list goes on. I have seen cats eat grass for medicinal purposes, maybe help pass a hairball, settle an upset stomach, etc. SO why do cat food manufactures load their cat food with grasses, seaweed and berries and then advertise it as 'Grain Free' ? Well it is grain free but with all of the filler the cats won't eat it. Seriously, have you ever seen domestic or wild cats eat berries, seaweed or alfalfa ? I'll try feeding the remaining cans of this Grain Free Fish food to the raccoons, possums and skunks. They like salads .............. … more

    My old cat loves this!

My cat loves this food. She used to throw up after eating other brands of food because they were too rich and had bad ingredients, but my cat has been doing great on this brand for a year now!

    One flavor ruined it

Got a case of the Lamb Pate and Ocean Fish. Our cats loved the Lamb, but treat the Ocean fish like there is something bad in it. Unfortunately, we are done with the brand because of it. They should either remove or redo the recipe for the ocean fish. The ocean fish is going to work against the company. Also, a variety pack would be good, just do not add the ocean fish to it!

    Both cats hate it

    By on

Both cats are on a diet, so they’re hungry, but they would rather starve than eat this. Fortunately they tolerate it when mixed in with stuff they do like, so it’s not going to waste.

CATS DON'T CARE FOR IT VERY MUCH.

The cats eat it but don't crave it. Portions remain in their dishes.

Normally great, but not the last few cases

    By on

I've been getting this kind for a few months and the 3 cats love it. One of the main reasons I like this brand is that it has always had a nice firm consistency in the can, making the halfway point split easy, but lately it has a much softer, runnier consistency. I have contacted both Chewy and Red Barn about this formula change or whatever might be going on, no solution as of 5/30/19. Maybe I'll try a different flavor.

    Not the best choice

    By on

My two indoor cats refused this completely. My neighbor's inside cats won't eat it either. We have two strays that come around. One doesn't like it, the other sort of nibbles at it. Not sure what's going on here but if a homeless stray won't eat it something seems off.
