This is only a guide. Optimal feeding amounts may vary according to your dog's temperament, activity level and environment. If you have any questions regarding your pet's health, please contact your veterinarian.
We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.
How are Royal Canin diets preserved?
All of our dry diets are preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols, citric acid, and rosemary extract. Our canned diets are naturally preserved and sterilized during the cooking and canning process.
Where do the ingredients in Royal Canin diets come from?
We select our ingredients based on multiple factors, including the supplier’s compliance with our quality and food safety requirements, consistent availability, and on the nutrients required to meet the dietary needs of the pet.Royal Canin is making strides towards sustainability by attempting to obtain sources of raw materials as close to each manufacturing facility as possible. In some cases, we use international suppliers, because only those suppliers can offer raw materials that comply with our quality and food safety standards.
Why do some Royal Canin diets contain by-products?
Royal Canin chooses ingredients because they deliver high-quality nutrients that support our customized pet food formulas. Using chicken by-product meal instead of chicken meal for example will allow Royal Canin to maintain its highly customized nutrient standards while achieving a more secure and sustainable supply.
Why do some Royal Canin diets contain grains?
Grains can be a healthy part of any cat or dog’s diet. As always, we focus on the nutrients each ingredient provides and grains can provide many important nutrients.
How do you ensure Royal Canin diets are safe for my pet?
Our Quality and Food Safety systems are state-of-the-art and we continue to invest heavily in new technology to make sure they remain that way.* We put our suppliers through a rigorous selection process that doesn’t end with our first purchase.* We monitor every load delivered to our plants to verify the safety and quality of the ingredients we use to make pet food.* We perform tests on finished pet foods before they are shipped to our customers.* We manufacture every pet food we sell, in plants that we own; our plants are ISO 9001:2008 certified for Quality Management and ISO 22000 certified for Food Safety.
How do I know which Royal Canin diet is right for my pet?
Based on size, age, lifestyle, and breed, each cat or dog has unique nutritional needs. For healthy pets, use our Product Selector to find the right diet for your cat or dog.If your pet is experiencing health issues, please refer to your veterinarian for more information. Your veterinarian will consider multiple factors when recommending an appropriate diet.
Why Pure Breed Dogs Need Tailored Nutrition
From their personalities to their distinctive physiologies, pure breed dogs have unique characteristics that make them sought-after and beloved companions. When choosing a formula, it's important to keep in mind the unique characteristics of your breed including:
Face and Jaw: All dogs fall into two basic jaw types: Brachycephalic or mesocephalic. Breeds with short, broad muzzles (like Bulldogs) are examples of a brachycephalic jaw. Breeds with a longer muzzle (like Labrador Retrievers) are examples of mesocephalic breeds. The jaw type, and even biting patterns can affect how a breed picks up kibble.
Skin Types: The skin's most important function is to serve as a barrier of protection-but not all breeds have the same skin type. From wrinkled and folded (which traps heat and moisture) to sensitive or water resistant, precise levels of key nutrients help to support a breed's unique skin health needs.
Distinctive Coats: There's more to a coat than meets the eye. From the color and texture to undercoats, each pure breed dog has a unique coat with unique needs.
Breed Specific Formulas
Every dog is unique. From the small, flat-faced Pug to the obesity-prone Labrador Retriever, Royal Canin Breed Health Nutrition is tailor-made to address the unique needs of pure breed dogs. These breed specific formulas benefit from the latest Royal Canin research on the selection of the best protein sources, unique nutrients and tailor-made kibbles.
Formulated for German Shepherds
Royal Canin's German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food is designed exclusively for pure breed German Shepherds over 15 months.

Digestive performance: This formula addresses sensitive digestion common in German Shepherds with highly digestible L.I.P. proteins and a selection of specific fibers. These limit intestinal fermentation and help maintain a balanced intestinal flora.
Healthy skin & coat: Appropriate food plays an important part in maintaining the quality of the skin and coat. German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food helps support the skin's role as a barrier with an exclusive complex of nutrients, and helps maintain skin and coat health with EPA and DHA.
Bone & joint support: German Shepherds tend to have a lively temperament that can lead to hard-working joints. This formula helps support healthy bones and joints and maintain an ideal weight.

Exclusive Kibble
German Shepherds have a long, strong muzzle with equally strong teeth. The size, shape and texture of the kibble in German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food is exclusively designed for easy pick up while also encouraging dogs to chew.

Why Royal Canin?
Over time, Royal Canin has accumulated vast knowledge about cats and dogs that only extensive research, scientific study and tireless talks with pet professionals, veterinarians and owners can provide. That knowledge led them to develop precise nutrition for cats and dogs. Each Royal Canin formula is tailored to pets' size, age, lifestyle and breed and contains more than 50 perfectly balanced nutrients for the most effective diet possible.
Their focus on science puts pets at the heart of the formulation process, choosing only ingredients that optimize the food's nutritional content. Royal Canin also continues to invest heavily in new technology to ensure their quality and food safety systems remain state-of-the-art, so pets can continue to benefit from the latest in food health and nutrition.

Not worth the premium price.
By Chris on Feb 17, 2021
I have 2 German Shepard dogs a 16 month old black Shepard and a 5 month old white Shepard. The 16 month got Royal Canin for Shepard puppy food, which at that time was a good food, and she couldn't wait to eat it. The white Shepard also started out on Royal Canin. The black Shepard was moved to adult Royal Canin. The kibble are enormous and she refuses it eat it. The puppy food now has a different smell to it, and kind of oily. The adult and puppy food now contain controversial ingredients based on a January 15 2021 report and are high in corn and other fillers. I just don't see paying that high of price for a low quality dog food. I asked my vet what she feeds her German Shepard dogs and she told me Purina ProPlan (not the sport). We need to do more research but I will not be buying Royal Canin any longer. … more

Very high quality - dogs seem to love it
By GSDMama on Feb 22, 2021
My three GSDs are notorious for sensitive stomachs, after having used Royal Canin in a pinch, I have integrated it in their normal diets seamlessly. They seem to love it, and they also seem more satiated. I am very happy and will continue to use it in their daily routines.

Texan dog LOVES it!
By 1234 on Dec 26, 2020
My 3 year old male GS has eaten Taste of the Wild and Science Diet his whole “long” life UNTIL we came upon this brand. We will NEVER go back! He has typical GS allergies, frequently itching and biting at himself, and I can tell a dramatic positive difference when we switched to this food. He remains very high-energy and active, AND his fur has become intensely soft, not so stiff and wirey like before. The fact that the bag arrives vacuum sealed says a lot about the quality of the food. People are complaining about the kibble size being large but in my case it’s a TOTAL benefit because it keeps my boy from eating too fast and dry heaving his way through a meal. I Don't have a Shepherd
By Chuckteg on Jan 5, 2021
I have a Lab mix that will almost do anything for a treat. I reward her with a treat for a number of things she does through out the day. For a number of reasons I don't like most dog treats ( Ingredients, size, packaging, availability). Searching Chewy for a dog food with larger kibble's and better ingredients to use as a treat I tried this Shepherd food my dog loves them and so does my sisters Labradoodle.

Enjoying the GSD formula
By Princeton on Dec 27, 2020
Switched to this brand over Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin for my German Shepherd. The Purina would go right thru him. Solid stools, but how do you expect the nutrients to absorb if your dog takes massive dumps later? Royal Canin seems better, time will tell. Would have given 5 stars but my 1-2 day delivery took 6 DAYS

My 5 year old GSD loves this stuff. Her coat is shiny and healthy and her weight is easy to maintain and she has gone from puppyhood to middle age. I couldn't be happier with this food!
