Royal Canin German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food
This Royal Canin formula is designed exclusively for pure breed German Shepherds over 15 months. The German Shepherd has a notably fragile digestive system, which often leads to soft stools, frequent digestive upset and sometimes bloating. Unlike other breeds, the German Shepherd’s skin is extremely alkaline and very sensitive. That's why it's important to choose a diet tailor-made for their specific needs.

This is only a guide. Optimal feeding amounts may vary according to your dog's temperament, activity level and environment. If you have any questions regarding your pet's health, please contact your veterinarian.
We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.
How are Royal Canin diets preserved?
All of our dry diets are preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols, citric acid, and rosemary extract. Our canned diets are naturally preserved and sterilized during the cooking and canning process.
Where do the ingredients in Royal Canin diets come from?
We select our ingredients based on multiple factors, including the supplier’s compliance with our quality and food safety requirements, consistent availability, and on the nutrients required to meet the dietary needs of the pet.Royal Canin is making strides towards sustainability by attempting to obtain sources of raw materials as close to each manufacturing facility as possible. In some cases, we use international suppliers, because only those suppliers can offer raw materials that comply with our quality and food safety standards.
Why do some Royal Canin diets contain by-products?
Royal Canin chooses ingredients because they deliver high-quality nutrients that support our customized pet food formulas. Using chicken by-product meal instead of chicken meal for example will allow Royal Canin to maintain its highly customized nutrient standards while achieving a more secure and sustainable supply.
Why do some Royal Canin diets contain grains?
Grains can be a healthy part of any cat or dog’s diet. As always, we focus on the nutrients each ingredient provides and grains can provide many important nutrients.
How do you ensure Royal Canin diets are safe for my pet?
Our Quality and Food Safety systems are state-of-the-art and we continue to invest heavily in new technology to make sure they remain that way.* We put our suppliers through a rigorous selection process that doesn’t end with our first purchase.* We monitor every load delivered to our plants to verify the safety and quality of the ingredients we use to make pet food.* We perform tests on finished pet foods before they are shipped to our customers.* We manufacture every pet food we sell, in plants that we own; our plants are ISO 9001:2008 certified for Quality Management and ISO 22000 certified for Food Safety.
How do I know which Royal Canin diet is right for my pet?
Based on size, age, lifestyle, and breed, each cat or dog has unique nutritional needs. For healthy pets, use our Product Selector to find the right diet for your cat or dog.If your pet is experiencing health issues, please refer to your veterinarian for more information. Your veterinarian will consider multiple factors when recommending an appropriate diet.
Why Pure Breed Dogs Need Tailored Nutrition
From their personalities to their distinctive physiologies, pure breed dogs have unique characteristics that make them sought-after and beloved companions. When choosing a formula, it's important to keep in mind the unique characteristics of your breed including:
Face and Jaw: All dogs fall into two basic jaw types: Brachycephalic or mesocephalic. Breeds with short, broad muzzles (like Bulldogs) are examples of a brachycephalic jaw. Breeds with a longer muzzle (like Labrador Retrievers) are examples of mesocephalic breeds. The jaw type, and even biting patterns can affect how a breed picks up kibble.
Skin Types: The skin's most important function is to serve as a barrier of protection-but not all breeds have the same skin type. From wrinkled and folded (which traps heat and moisture) to sensitive or water resistant, precise levels of key nutrients help to support a breed's unique skin health needs.
Distinctive Coats: There's more to a coat than meets the eye. From the color and texture to undercoats, each pure breed dog has a unique coat with unique needs.
Breed Specific Formulas
Every dog is unique. From the small, flat-faced Pug to the obesity-prone Labrador Retriever, Royal Canin Breed Health Nutrition is tailor-made to address the unique needs of pure breed dogs. These breed specific formulas benefit from the latest Royal Canin research on the selection of the best protein sources, unique nutrients and tailor-made kibbles.
Formulated for German Shepherds
Royal Canin's German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food is designed exclusively for pure breed German Shepherds over 15 months.

Digestive performance: This formula addresses sensitive digestion common in German Shepherds with highly digestible L.I.P. proteins and a selection of specific fibers. These limit intestinal fermentation and help maintain a balanced intestinal flora.
Healthy skin & coat: Appropriate food plays an important part in maintaining the quality of the skin and coat. German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food helps support the skin's role as a barrier with an exclusive complex of nutrients, and helps maintain skin and coat health with EPA and DHA.
Bone & joint support: German Shepherds tend to have a lively temperament that can lead to hard-working joints. This formula helps support healthy bones and joints and maintain an ideal weight.

Exclusive Kibble
German Shepherds have a long, strong muzzle with equally strong teeth. The size, shape and texture of the kibble in German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food is exclusively designed for easy pick up while also encouraging dogs to chew.

Why Royal Canin?
Over time, Royal Canin has accumulated vast knowledge about cats and dogs that only extensive research, scientific study and tireless talks with pet professionals, veterinarians and owners can provide. That knowledge led them to develop precise nutrition for cats and dogs. Each Royal Canin formula is tailored to pets' size, age, lifestyle and breed and contains more than 50 perfectly balanced nutrients for the most effective diet possible.
Their focus on science puts pets at the heart of the formulation process, choosing only ingredients that optimize the food's nutritional content. Royal Canin also continues to invest heavily in new technology to ensure their quality and food safety systems remain state-of-the-art, so pets can continue to benefit from the latest in food health and nutrition.

Converted from Orijen
By Alex on Dec 1, 2019
I was very resistant to switch to Royal Canin. We have an itchy 18 month old German Shepherd with digestive issues. After a lot of research and consultation with our vet, we put him on Orijen dog food. I was a fan of the ingredients and felt I was giving him the best food possible. But he still had chronic diarrhea, so he was also on probiotics which helped a bit. We moved and therefore moved vets. They recommended we switch to this food and I was very resistant because of the ingredients. I did not like that it was manufactured and seemed artificial. But, we were open to giving it a shot. I’m so glad we did. He’s been on it for over two months and his stool is now hard without probiotics. I I was very resistant to switch to Royal Canin. We give him allergy shots to help there, so it’s hard to tell if the food helps at all. However, I’m so happy his digestive issues are resolved because I could tell it was weighing him down to not feel his best. I highly recommend you try this if you are having trouble finding the right food for your German Shepherds … more

Love/Hate opinion

I don't love the looks of the ingredients at all it looks totally assembled chemically rather than a few natural ingredients. On the other hand the stuff works magic if your German Shepherd is having digestive issues. We have used it on and off medicinally over the years rather than long term food....plus it is pricy stuff! Currently we are experimenting mixing it with another lower priced big box brand with good results so far. But this food has literally been a life saver for one dog years ago! We had him dog hospital he was so sick they ran thousands of dollars of tests and turned out it was all food related...someone overheard us in dog food isle agonizing over ingredients and our dog's I don't love the looks of the ingredients at all it looks totally assembled chemically rather than a few natural ingredients. THIS IS GREAT FOOD but...
By classymum on Nov 16, 2019
I have been feeding my GSD female Royal Canin ever since she was a pup and she has always done well on it. But now, I'm going to switch her to a different brand because I simply can't afford to pay nearly $70 per month for dog food. I know it's good food because our vet recommends it but there has to be another brand that's a bit cheaper that will work just as well for her. My girl absolutely loves Rachel Ray's Roaster Dog Treats so I'm going to try her Nutrish dog kibble which is much more reasonably priced and has nutritious ingredients all made in the USA. It pains me to do this but with grocery prices continuing to rise, I'm afraid it's time to make a change. No more diarrhea
By Klaus1 on Nov 19, 2019
Our German Shepherd pup (now 10 months) had awful diarrhea, no matter what we tried. It was chronic but would wax & wain and had mucous in it. After taking him to the vet and reading all the info...it was thought he had a form of IBS/colitis. We felt awful for him. Didnt realize how sensitive their stomachs are. I did a lot of reading on German Shepherd diets and decided to give Royal Canin GSD food a try. We noticed a HUGE difference in his stools only 3 days after starting Royal Canin. That was about 3 months ago. He hasnt has any diarrhea or loose stools since. This food is well worth the cost! Very thankful for this dog food!

My GSD's Favorite Dry Food
By Molly on Nov 27, 2019
The kibble is quite large with an interesting shape. I was not so sure if my girl would like it. I put a cup in her bowl. She looked happy and tossed a kibble up in the air and then caught it. She started eating right away. My GSD girl has been on this food over a week. She is doing very well. Her coat looks shiner. This is the first time that she eats her breakfast right away after her monring walk. Before Royal Canin, I have to put meat, fish or eggs on my GSD girl's dry food to get her eat.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND
By Druegr12 on Oct 28, 2019
My German Shepherd, Murphy, is about 2 years old. He was diagnosed with EPI at 6 months old and had always been on Gentle Giants dog food. About two weeks ago, Murphy started having severe nausea and loose bowel movements. After about $800 in vet bills later, it was confirmed that he had developed IBS in addition to his EPI. Trying to avoid having to purchase pricey prescription food, I researched a lot of different options and stumbled upon this food. It's only been about 1 week since I introduced this food to Murphy, but his nausea and loose bowel movements have ceased altogether. He's also regained his food drive - which I hadn't seen since his diagnosis with EPI 1 1/2 years ago! He gobbles My German Shepherd, Murphy, is about 2 years old. Not sure if this is the right food for her
By Enyasmama on Nov 26, 2019
When all the research started to come out about the grain-free foods, I switched my German Shepherd/Doberman mix over to the Royal Canin German Shepherd. She likes it quite a bit, but she looks like she's gained a little weight. My vet recommended this food, along with the Purina. I like this fine, but I'm not sure I'll stay with it.

Best Diet for German Shepherds
By David on Nov 5, 2019
I have to give Royal Canin a 5-Star review for this specific diet for my dog. I have a 1 1/2 year old shepherd that I had on 5 diets before this one. All of the other diets were giving him digestive issues and the stool quality was really poor. After switching, my dog's energy & health improved drastically including his stool.

Great for treats!
By shadowsmom on Sep 6, 2019
We were between Royal Canin and Dr. Gary's brand for dog food. Shadow does great on Dr. Gary's so we decided to keep him on that. We also got a bag of Royal Canin though for treats! Our GSD is huge on treats and we're still heavily training him so these are perfect. He has such a sensitive stomach so a lot of treats upset his stomach. Or the ones he does well on are kind of pricey so it's not ideal for training. Our solution is to use these bad boys when we need to pump him with treats for encouragement. I don't have to worry about his poop with these bad boys. Since we have never gave this to him as food he thinks they are treats since they're huge. I recommend for sure!

My boy loves it
By Bear on Aug 18, 2019
Had my GSD on Orijen Large puppy from 8 weeks until 20 months. Not sure how he liked it, he would make a whole bowl last all day. Started supplementing it with Annamaet and he really wasn't a big fan of that. With all the news and warnings going around about grain-free food, I started researching different options. I came across Royal Canin German Shepherd mix and what a difference. I supplement his food with Primal Raw Nuggets Rabbit and Beef and he eats it right up. I notice a big change in his coat, energy, personality and his behavior. He seems much happier, since he's been on this food, (1 week at the time of this review). Will only get this food from now on.
